Chapter 14: The Night Everything Changed

The words hit harder than anything else.

“You weren’t supposed to be there?””

David nodded slowly.

I stared at my son.

Eight years of memories rearranged themselves in my mind.

The hospital.

The panic.

The doctors.

The final days.

I had always remembered that night as a tragedy.

Something that happened.

Something no one caused.

But now…

I wasn’t sure anymore.

“Tell me everything.””

David sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“I was supposed to meet Mark.””

Sarah looked at him.

“What?””

David ignored her.

“Dad found out I had been dealing with him. He told me to cut contact.””

“Did you?””

He looked ashamed.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

The same words.

Always the same words.

“I thought if I paid him back, everything would disappear.””

I closed my eyes.

“How did you get the money?””

David went quiet.

Then:

“I sold something.””

“What?””

“My shares.””

I frowned.

“Your shares?””

“In the family company.””

I looked at Thomas.

He nodded.

“Michael had transferred some ownership to David years earlier.””

I remembered.

My husband had always wanted David to feel responsible.

Not just receive.

Earn.

“So what happened?””

David swallowed.

“The night Dad collapsed, I went to the house to talk to him.””

My breath caught.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

I looked away.

The pain was overwhelming.

Not because he had made mistakes.

Because he had carried them alone.

“And?””

David continued.

“Dad and I argued.””

“About what?””

“About Sarah.””

I looked toward her.

She went still.

“He knew she was involved.””

Sarah whispered:

“David.””

He looked at her.

“No more lies.””

The room became silent.

“He told me she was dangerous.””

Sarah shook her head.

“He hated me.””

“No.””

David’s voice cracked.

“He was worried about me.””

Thomas asked:

“What happened after the argument?””

David closed his eyes.

“I left.””

“When?””

“A few minutes before he collapsed.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“So you were the last person with him.””

David nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you never told anyone?””

“I thought everyone would think I did something.””

I looked at him.

“Did you?””

His eyes filled.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

Almost desperately.

Thomas interrupted.

“David, what happened next?””

“I got a call from Sarah.””

Everyone looked at her.

She lowered her eyes.

“She told me Mark was looking for me.””

David continued.

“I went home.””

“And Dad?””

“I found out from you.””

I remembered that moment.

The phone call.

The hospital.

The ambulance.

The fear.

David had been there.

But he had never told me why.

Then Thomas’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown sender.

A photo.

The photo showed Michael’s hospital room.

My heart stopped.

The date was the night he collapsed.

But that wasn’t what scared me.

It was what was in the corner of the picture.

A person standing near the door.

Watching.

Thomas zoomed in.

Nobody spoke.

Because we all recognized the person.

Sarah whispered:

“No.””

David looked horrified.

“That’s impossible.””

I stared at the screen.

Because the person in the photograph was someone who should never have been there.

Someone who claimed she didn’t know anything.

May you like

Someone who had been lying from the beginning.

Carol.
