Chapter 15: The Woman Behind the Curtain
Carol’s face stared back at us from the photograph.
Older.
Blurred.
But unmistakable.
I couldn’t move.
For years, I had trusted her.
I had invited her into my home.
I had shared coffee with her.
I had thanked her for helping Michael organize his finances.
And all that time…
She had been watching us.
“Where did you get this?”” Thomas asked.
David looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Thomas checked the message.
“Unknown number.””
Mark.
It had to be him.
He was revealing pieces.
But why?
“What does Carol want?”” I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
“That is what we need to find out.””
Sarah suddenly stood.
“I can help.””
Everyone looked at her.
I almost laughed.
“Why should we believe anything you say?””
She looked hurt.
But this time, I didn’t care.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
She continued.
“But I know Carol better than you think.””
David frowned.
“How?””
Sarah looked at him.
“Because she recruited me.””
The room went silent.
“You said she contacted you.””
“She did.””
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
David looked devastated.
“You met me because of her?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I watched my son break a little more.
Thomas asked:
“Why would Carol recruit you?””
Sarah sat down.
“She needed someone close to David.””
“Why?””
“To control him.””
David looked away.
Sarah continued.
“She knew he was desperate. She knew he wanted to prove himself.””
“And you played along.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty was almost worse than another lie.
“Why admit this now?””
Sarah looked at me.
“Because Carol is dangerous.””
I crossed my arms.
“And you aren’t?””
She didn’t argue.
That was the first time she had accepted responsibility.
“She told me the house would be easy.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“She said once David was married and had financial problems, you would eventually give him anything he needed.””
My stomach tightened.
“She thought I was weak.””
Sarah nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Michael?””
Her face changed.
“Michael was the problem.””
Thomas leaned forward.
“What did Carol say about him?””
Sarah whispered:
“She said Michael saw too much.””
A cold silence filled the room.
“She knew he was suspicious.””
“Yes.””
“She knew he had the trust.””
“Yes.””
“She knew he had evidence.””
Sarah nodded.
Then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
“She also knew when Michael would be alone.””
Nobody spoke.
David looked sick.
“Are you saying…”
Sarah looked at him.
“I’m saying Carol knew about the hospital visit before it happened.””
My hands trembled.
Thomas stood.
“We need to contact authorities.””
But before he could move, my phone rang again.
Same unknown number.
Everyone stared.
I answered.
“Mark?””
His voice came through immediately.
“You finally understand.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you want?””
“I want what Michael took from me.””
“What did he take?””
A pause.
Then:
“Proof.””
Thomas moved closer.
“What proof?””
Mark laughed.
“Not proof against me.””
The room froze.
“Then against who?””
His voice lowered.
“Against the person who planned everything.””
I looked at Carol’s photograph.
“Who?””
Mark answered.
And the name he said made David step backward.
Because it was someone none of us expected.
“Your husband’s closest friend.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“Michael’s friend?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Mark whispered:
“Richard Bennett.””
I froze.
May you like
Because Richard wasn’t just Michael’s friend.
He was Michael’s older brother.
