Chapter 9: The Evidence Vanessa Tried to Destroy

At 7:12 a.m., Marcus received a call from the warehouse manager.

"Mr. Johnson, I think you need to come here.""

Marcus sat upright in bed.

"What happened?""

"Someone tried to access Unit 214 overnight.""

His stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"The person used a key card registered to Vanessa Johnson. But the system rejected it because the account is under review.""

Marcus was already reaching for his clothes.

"Did you see the person?""

"The security camera caught someone wearing a dark jacket. The face isn't clear, but the vehicle outside appears to be the same black SUV from earlier this week.""

Marcus called Daniel.

Within twenty minutes, they were driving toward the warehouse.

When they arrived, two police officers were standing beside the manager's office.

The manager approached them.

"I didn't want to touch anything," he said.

"The police are checking the access records.""

Daniel introduced himself and explained the property dispute.

One of the officers, a woman named Officer Bennett, listened carefully.

"At this stage, we have an attempted unauthorized access and possible interference with records. We don't yet know whether anything was damaged or removed.""

Marcus nodded.

"Understood.""

Officer Bennett showed them the access log.

At 11:43 p.m., a key card had been used at the entrance.

The access attempt had failed.

A second attempt occurred six minutes later.

Then the person had left.

"Can you identify the vehicle?"" Marcus asked.

"We're reviewing the footage," Officer Bennett replied.

"If it supports an investigation, we'll preserve it.""

Daniel handed her a copy of the documents concerning the disputed transfer.

"We'd like these included in the record. They show that the storage unit's ownership may have been transferred using a forged authorization.""

Officer Bennett accepted the documents.

"We'll review them. Please don't attempt to access the unit yourself.""

Marcus agreed.

He was furious, but he understood that one reckless move could damage the case.

While the officers continued their work, Daniel received a call from the forensic examiner.

He listened, took several notes, and then turned to Marcus.

"The examiner has reviewed the photograph Maya found. The image itself doesn't prove wrongdoing, but it establishes that Vanessa and Adrian were associated with AC Strategic Holdings at least three years ago.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Can we use it?""

"As supporting evidence, yes. Not as proof of a fraudulent transaction. We need records showing what the company actually did.""

Marcus looked toward Unit 214.

"Then let's find those records.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not without authorization. We have the suspected forged transfer, the disputed agreement, and now the access attempts. I'll ask the court to authorize preservation and inspection of the unit's contents.""

Marcus nodded.

For once, there was nothing else to do but wait.

At 10:15, his phone rang.

Vanessa.

He answered.

"What?""

"Marcus, I need to see Maya.""

"We can arrange a supervised visit this weekend if that's what she wants.""

"Supervised?"" Vanessa repeated.

"What kind of mother needs supervision to see her own child?""

"The kind of mother whose daughter is still frightened after what happened.""

Vanessa's voice tightened.

"You're punishing me.""

"No. I'm trying to make sure Maya feels safe.""

"She's my daughter too!""

"I know.""

"Then stop treating me like a criminal!""

Marcus looked at the officers near the warehouse entrance.

He chose his words carefully.

"Vanessa, I'm not going to argue with you over the phone. Daniel will coordinate the legal matters with your attorney. We can arrange a time for you to see Maya that puts her needs first.""

She fell silent.

Then she said, "Have you found the letter?""

Marcus's blood ran cold.

He didn't answer immediately.

Vanessa spoke again.

"I know about the letter from your mother. I know Catherine has been talking to you.""

Marcus felt his grip tighten around the phone.

"How do you know that?""

"Because Catherine called me.""

"When?""

"Yesterday.""

"What did she tell you?""

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

"That you were asking questions about the past. Marcus, you need to understand something. Your mother wasn't the saint you remember.""

He stared at the ground.

"Don't talk about my mother like that.""

"She made mistakes. She involved herself in things she didn't understand.""

"She was trying to protect my father.""

"She was trying to control him!""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Why are you so afraid of a letter she wrote twelve years ago?""

Vanessa went silent.

Then she said, "Because that letter could destroy people who have nothing to do with our marriage.""

"Who?""

"You wouldn't understand.""

"Try me.""

She lowered her voice.

"Marcus, please. For Maya's sake, stop investigating the land.""

There was something new in her tone.

Not anger.

Fear.

For the first time, Vanessa sounded less like a woman demanding money and more like someone who had realized that the past was catching up with her.

Marcus asked one final question.

"What did Adrian remove from the storage unit?""

Vanessa stopped breathing for a moment.

Then she hung up.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Daniel approached him.

"That reaction tells us she knows something. It doesn't tell us exactly what.""

"I know.""

"We need to let the evidence speak.""

Marcus nodded.

But he was beginning to suspect that the missing document was only one part of the story.

That afternoon, Daniel received a response to their request for preservation of the storage unit.

The court had authorized steps to prevent further access while the disputed ownership and contents were reviewed.

The actual inspection would require additional coordination, but the warehouse was instructed to preserve the relevant records and prevent unauthorized entry.

Marcus returned to his office and found Rachel waiting outside his door.

She looked worried.

"There's a woman in the lobby asking for you.""

"Who?""

"She says her name is Linda Carter.""

Marcus went still.

Vanessa's mother.

The woman named in his mother's letter as the person who had kept the original forged agreement.

"Did she say why she's here?""

"She said she has information about your father.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel immediately replied, "We should meet her with counsel present. If she has evidence, we need to document it properly.""

They went downstairs.

Linda Carter was sitting in a chair near reception, wearing a cream-colored coat and holding a leather handbag on her lap.

She looked older than the woman in the family photographs, but Marcus recognized her immediately.

When she saw him, she stood.

"Marcus.""

"Mrs. Carter.""

"Please. Call me Linda.""

"I'd rather know why you're here.""

Linda glanced toward Daniel.

"Are you his attorney?""

"Yes," Daniel replied.

"Good. Then perhaps someone will finally listen to me.""

Marcus gestured toward a nearby conference room.

They sat down.

Linda placed a thick envelope on the table.

"I should have come to you years ago.""

Marcus stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't you?""

"Because I was afraid of what would happen to my daughter.""

He looked at her sharply.

"Your daughter helped file a claim against my father's property. She submitted an affidavit claiming he promised her an interest in the land.""

Linda closed her eyes.

"I know.""

"Did she lie?""

Linda began to cry.

"Yes.""

The word hung in the room.

Marcus felt his heart pound.

"Did you help her?""

"No. But I helped the people who created the original agreement.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Please explain exactly what you mean.""

Linda opened the envelope.

Inside were bank statements, correspondence, and a photocopy of a contract bearing Thomas Johnson's name.

"I was working for Richard Cole's investment group when they approached your father. They wanted to acquire the land before the surrounding area developed. Your father refused to sell at their price.""

Marcus looked at the contract.

"Was this document forged?""

Linda nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who forged it?""

"I don't know who physically created the signature. But I know the document was circulated after your father refused the proposal. Richard told us it would be used to pressure him into negotiations.""

Marcus stared at her.

"And Vanessa?""

Linda wiped her eyes.

"She was young when the first dispute began. But she learned about it as she grew older. She believed your father had denied her family money that they were entitled to.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard told her that your father had promised the land to him and then changed his mind.""

Daniel interrupted.

"Did you ever see a legitimate agreement signed by Thomas Johnson?""

"No.""

"Did you ever see evidence that he transferred an interest to Vanessa?""

"No.""

Marcus felt his hands tremble.

"Then why did she claim that he did?""

Linda looked away.

"Because Adrian told her the company could use the old agreement to force a settlement. He said that if you refused to cooperate, they could make the property dispute so expensive that you'd have to pay them to go away.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did Vanessa know the agreement was false?""

Linda nodded slowly.

"She knew there were serious problems with it. She knew your father had disputed the agreement. I can't tell you exactly what she believed about the signature, but she knew it was not an uncontested document.""

Marcus stared at her.

"She married me knowing all this?""

Linda began to cry harder.

"I don't know why she married you, Marcus. I truly don't. At first, I thought she loved you. I hoped she did.""

He looked down at the envelope.

"Then why are you coming forward now?""

Linda took a shaky breath.

"Because Adrian has gone too far. Three days ago, he came to my house and demanded that I hand over the original correspondence I kept from the investment group. He said the documents could be used to prove that Vanessa had known about the dispute for years.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Do you still have them?""

Linda nodded.

She reached into her handbag and removed a small flash drive.

"Copies of the emails, financial records, and letters. The originals are stored with my attorney.""

Daniel took the flash drive without connecting it to any device.

"We'll arrange for a forensic copy and document how it was provided. We'll also need your attorney's contact information.""

Linda nodded.

Marcus looked at her.

"Did Adrian threaten you?""

"He said that if I gave you the records, Vanessa would lose everything.""

"And what did you tell him?""

Linda's face crumpled.

"I told him that my daughter had already lost something far more important.""

Marcus said nothing.

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the hum of the air conditioner.

Then Linda looked directly at him.

"There's one more thing. I think Adrian took the original agreement from the storage unit because it contains a handwritten note on the back.""

"What note?""

Linda swallowed.

"A note from your father explaining why he refused to sign the deal.""

Marcus felt his pulse quicken.

"What did it say?""

"I don't remember every word. But I remember the final sentence.""

She closed her eyes.

"He wrote that he would never allow the land to be used to cover up what happened to Eleanor.""

Marcus went completely still.

His mother.

Her death.

The land.

The same names kept appearing together.

Before he could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and slowly looked up.

"Marcus, the warehouse manager has just received a formal notice from Vanessa's attorney.""

"What kind of notice?""

"Vanessa is claiming that the contents of Unit 214 belong to her personally. She's asking the court to prevent anyone from inspecting them.""

Marcus stared at Linda's envelope.

She had just admitted that the original agreement was false.

She had given them copies of the correspondence.

And now Vanessa was trying to stop the contents of the storage unit from being examined.

Daniel rose.

"We need to respond immediately.""

Marcus looked at Linda.

"Is there anything else you haven't told me?""

She hesitated.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

He waited.

"Your mother didn't die before the land dispute became serious.""

Marcus felt the room tilt.

Linda continued, tears running down her cheeks.

"She died after she discovered that Richard Cole's company had been using a secret financial arrangement to acquire property through false claims. She told me she was going to expose everyone involved.""

Marcus gripped the table.

"Are you saying the land dispute caused her death?""

"I'm saying I know why she was frightened. I know she was under pressure. But I cannot tell you that anyone caused her death. I don't have evidence of that.""

Daniel immediately spoke.

"We must be careful here. If there are records relating to her death, we'll seek them through the appropriate channels. We won't assume a crime occurred without evidence.""

Marcus nodded, barely hearing him.

Linda slid one final document across the table.

It was an old letter addressed to Thomas Johnson.

The sender's name was Richard Cole.

The date was two days before Eleanor's death.

Marcus read the first line.

Your wife has discovered the arrangement. If she speaks to the authorities, the entire deal will collapse.

His hands began to shake.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

Make sure she understands what silence is worth.

Marcus stared at the page.

It did not prove what had happened to his mother.

But it proved that Richard Cole knew she had discovered the arrangement and wanted her to remain silent.

And Richard Cole was Adrian's father.

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes toward Linda.

"Where is the original letter?""

"With my attorney," she replied.

"And there is another document that I believe matters even more.""

"What document?""

Linda looked toward Daniel, then back at Marcus.

"The original agreement was not the only paper Thomas refused to sign. There was also a document identifying who would inherit the land if he died before the dispute was resolved.""

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Who was named?""

Linda's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Your mother.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Eleanor was already dead.""

"I know.""

"Then the document makes no sense.""

Linda shook her head.

"It was drafted before she died. But the beneficiary designation was changed afterward.""

Marcus felt cold spread through his body.

"Changed by whom?""

Linda looked at him with an expression of pure dread.

"Vanessa.""

And before Daniel could ask another question, Marcus's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed Vanessa's name.

This time, he answered immediately.

Her voice was trembling.

"Marcus, listen to me. Whatever Linda told you, don't believe everything she says.""

"Why?""

"Because Adrian has the original document.""

Marcus froze.

"What document?""

"The one that proves your father never intended to leave you the land.""

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered the words that turned the entire case upside down.

"Your father changed his will the night before he died.""
