Chapter 10: The Truth That Destroyed Every Lie

Marcus stared at the phone as though Vanessa's words had physically struck him.

"My father changed his will the night before he died?""

"Yes," Vanessa replied.

"And Adrian has the document.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Daniel immediately gestured for him to keep the call going.

"Why would my father change his will without telling me?""

"Because he was afraid.""

"Of whom?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Of the people who were threatening him.""

"Which people?""

"Marcus, please. I can't explain this over the phone.""

"You seem to have no problem explaining it when you want something from me.""

"That's not fair.""

"Fair?"" Marcus's voice hardened.

"You lied about my father's property. You signed an affidavit claiming he promised you land. You demanded that I sign away assets that weren't yours. And now you're telling me that my father secretly changed his will the night before he died?""

"I didn't know about the will until recently!""

"Then how do you know Adrian has it?""

Silence.

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

"Vanessa?""

Finally, she whispered, "Because he showed it to me.""

Daniel wrote something on a notepad and slid it across the table.

*Ask her where and when.*

Marcus followed the instruction.

"Where did he show it to you?""

"At his apartment.""

"When?""

"Last week.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Before or after you kissed him outside your office?""

Vanessa began to cry.

"Marcus, that's not the point.""

"It is exactly the point. You were planning a property settlement while hiding a document that supposedly changed my father's wishes.""

"I was trying to protect myself!""

"From what?""

She didn't answer.

Marcus took a breath.

"Where is the original will now?""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"No! Adrian said he had it secured with his attorney.""

"Then give me the attorney's name.""

"I can't.""

Marcus stared at the phone.

"Why not?""

"Because if I tell you, he'll know I talked to you.""

"He's already using you to take my property. What do you think he'll do when he realizes you no longer have control of the situation?""

Vanessa's breathing became ragged.

"You don't understand Adrian.""

"Then explain him to me.""

"He told me the land dispute would be easy to resolve. He said the investment group had a legitimate claim and that you would eventually have to settle.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

Marcus felt a bitter ache in his chest.

"Did you ever love me?""

The question escaped before he could stop it.

Vanessa went silent.

For a moment, he could hear only the faint sound of traffic on her end of the call.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Then why did you do this?""

"Because I was afraid of losing everything.""

"You had a husband who trusted you. A daughter who adored you. A home.

A future. What exactly did you think you were losing?""

Vanessa began to sob.

"I thought you were going to leave me with nothing.""

"I never threatened to leave you with nothing.""

"You always controlled everything, Marcus! The business, the properties, the accounts. I had to ask you about every major financial decision.""

"Because the company was mine before we married, and because I never wanted you to be responsible for risks you didn't understand.""

"You made me feel like I was nothing!""

Marcus stared at the wall.

He remembered the expensive gifts, the holidays, the comfortable home, and the years he had spent trying to give Vanessa the life she wanted.

He had made mistakes. He had worked too much. He had missed dinners and family events.

But he had never believed that love meant surrendering control of everything he owned.

"I should have listened when you said you felt excluded," he admitted quietly.

"But feeling excluded doesn't justify lying about my father or using our daughter as leverage.""

Vanessa cried harder.

"I know.""

"Do you?""

"Yes.""

"Then tell me where Adrian is keeping the will.""

She hesitated.

Finally, she gave him an address.

Daniel wrote it down.

Marcus asked one more question.

"Vanessa, did you know my mother before you met me?""

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered, "Yes.""

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

"Tell me everything.""

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

"My mother introduced me to Eleanor when I was a child. I used to visit your family's house. Your mother was kind to me.""

"Then why did she warn my father about you?""

"Because I made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

"I gave my mother copies of documents I shouldn't have taken from your father's office. I thought she was helping investors negotiate a fair deal. I didn't understand what they were planning.""

Marcus stared at the table.

"How old were you?""

"Twenty-two.""

"And you never told me?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I was ashamed. And because when I met you, I wanted to believe I could start over.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Did you marry me because of the land?""

Vanessa's answer came slowly.

"Not at first.""

He felt a cold weight settle in his chest.

"Not at first?""

"I loved you, Marcus. I did. But after we married, Adrian contacted me again.

He said the investment group still had a claim against your father. He told me I could help settle the dispute and protect my own future.""

"And you chose to help him.""

"Yes.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

The truth hurt more than the lie.

She had loved him, perhaps.

But when the opportunity came to choose between honesty and personal gain, she had chosen the latter.

"Where is the will?"" he asked.

"I told you. I don't know exactly where it is.""

"Then find out.""

"Marcus—"

"Do not contact me again about property, money, or legal matters. Daniel will speak to your attorney. If you want to see Maya, we'll arrange it in a way that protects her.""

He ended the call.

Daniel looked at him.

"That address could be important. But we need to verify the connection before taking any action.""

Marcus nodded.

"Let's go.""

The address led them to a private office building in downtown Atlanta.

Adrian Cole's name appeared on a directory beside a consulting firm.

Daniel contacted the appropriate authorities and explained that they had information concerning a potentially disputed estate document. They did not enter Adrian's office or attempt to seize anything.

Instead, Daniel sent a formal preservation request to the firm's legal representative and asked that any purported will or property agreement be retained without alteration.

At 4:30 p.m., Adrian's attorney responded.

The firm denied possessing the original will.

However, it acknowledged holding a document described as a draft estate amendment prepared several years earlier.

Marcus read the response twice.

A draft amendment.

Not an executed will.

Daniel explained the distinction.

"An unsigned draft doesn't automatically change an inheritance. We need to examine the document, determine who prepared it, and establish whether Thomas ever signed a valid amendment.""

Marcus stared at the page.

"So Adrian may have been bluffing.""

"Possibly. Or he may have seen a draft and misunderstood what it meant. We don't know yet.""

Two days later, Daniel obtained permission to inspect the draft through the appropriate legal process.

Marcus sat beside him in a conference room while the document was placed on the table.

The first page contained routine language concerning Thomas's estate.

The second listed several properties.

The third contained a proposed amendment concerning the land.

Marcus read the paragraph carefully.

The draft suggested that a portion of the property might be placed into a trust for the benefit of a charitable foundation established in Eleanor Johnson's name.

It did not transfer the land to Vanessa.

It did not disinherit Marcus.

And it did not bear Thomas's signature.

At the bottom, a handwritten note read:

Do not execute until the disputed agreement has been investigated.

Marcus stared at the words.

His father had not changed his will the night before he died.

He had been considering a protective arrangement.

The document Adrian had shown Vanessa was a draft—possibly taken out of context, possibly deliberately misrepresented.

Daniel pointed to the handwriting.

"This is consistent with the notes in your father's notebook. He wanted to prevent the property from being used to support a fraudulent claim.""

Marcus exhaled slowly.

For the first time in days, he felt a small measure of relief.

Then Daniel turned to the final page.

A list of people who had received copies of the draft was attached.

One name appeared near the bottom.

*Vanessa Johnson.*

Beside it was a date from three years earlier.

Marcus stared at the entry.

"She had this document three years ago?""

"According to the distribution list, yes.""

Daniel looked at him carefully.

"That doesn't establish why she received it, but it confirms that she knew about the proposed trust long before the recent dispute.""

Marcus leaned back.

"She knew my father was trying to protect the land. And she helped Adrian challenge it anyway.""

Daniel didn't disagree.

The legal battle continued for several weeks.

The original disputed agreement was submitted for forensic examination. The suspected forged transfer authorization was referred for further investigation. The storage unit remained under legal review, and the court ordered the parties to preserve the relevant records while the ownership dispute was assessed.

The evidence did not resolve every question.

But it began to establish a clear pattern.

The property claim relied on an agreement that Thomas had disputed.

The transfer of the storage unit appeared to have been authorized through a document the former estate administrator denied signing.

And Vanessa's affidavit contained claims that conflicted with contemporaneous records.

Marcus refused to settle the dispute simply to make it disappear.

He also refused to use Maya as a weapon.

When Vanessa requested a visit, he agreed to a meeting in a neutral setting with a family professional present.

She arrived wearing a simple gray dress, with no designer handbag and no expensive jewelry.

Maya stood beside Marcus, clutching a small stuffed rabbit.

When Vanessa entered the room, she stopped.

"Hi, baby," she whispered.

Maya looked at her.

"Mommy?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

Maya took one cautious step forward.

"Why did you kiss Adrian?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

She knelt.

"Because I made a very bad choice.""

"Do you love him more than Daddy?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I should never have made you feel that way.""

"Then why did you tell Daddy not to touch him?""

Vanessa covered her mouth.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Finally, she said, "Because I was selfish. I was trying to protect what I wanted, and I forgot that I was hurting the people who loved me.""

Maya looked down at her rabbit.

"Did you forget about me?""

"No, baby. Never.""

"But you didn't hug me.""

Vanessa began to cry.

"I know. And I am so sorry.""

Maya didn't run into her arms.

She didn't forgive her immediately.

She simply stood there, trying to understand how the woman she loved could have hurt her so badly.

Marcus watched quietly.

He wanted to rescue his daughter from the pain.

But he understood that she needed the truth more than she needed another promise.

Vanessa stayed for twenty minutes.

When the visit ended, Maya returned to Marcus and took his hand.

"Can we go home now?""

"Of course, sweetheart.""

As they walked toward the parking lot, she looked up at him.

"Will Mommy be okay?""

Marcus considered the question.

"I hope so.""

"Are you mad at her?""

"Yes," he admitted.

"But being mad doesn't mean we have to be cruel.""

Maya nodded.

Then she slipped her hand into his.

That evening, Daniel called with an update.

"The forensic examiner has completed the next stage of the review. The disputed agreement contains significant inconsistencies, and the signature attributed to your father is not consistent with the verified samples examined. The examiner recommends further investigation into the document's origin.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Is that enough to defeat the claim?""

"It's strong evidence for challenging it, but the court will determine the legal outcome. We still need the original document and the remaining financial records.""

Marcus looked toward Maya's bedroom.

"Keep going.""

"There is something else," Daniel said.

"Linda Carter's attorney has agreed to provide the original correspondence through a formal evidence-preservation process. One of the letters appears to show that the investment group knew Thomas had rejected the proposed transaction.""

Marcus felt his shoulders loosen slightly.

"Good.""

"And the investigators are examining the suspected false transfer authorization.""

Marcus ended the call and stood beside the window.

For weeks, his life had been a maze of secrets.

He had discovered his wife's betrayal, learned that his father had been threatened, and uncovered evidence that a business dispute had haunted his family for more than a decade.

He still didn't know everything that had happened to his mother.

He still didn't know how much of Vanessa's relationship with him had been genuine.

And he didn't know whether she would ever take full responsibility for what she had done.

But one thing was certain.

He would no longer allow anyone to use love as a reason to surrender the truth.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Catherine appeared.

*I found another page in your mother's old papers. I think it explains why she trusted your father with the letter.*

Marcus called her immediately.

"What does it say?""

Catherine's voice was soft.

"It says your mother knew Thomas had made a mistake years earlier. She forgave him, but she warned him never to hide the truth from you.""

Marcus stared at the photograph of his parents on the bookshelf.

"What mistake?""

Catherine paused.

Then she said, "Your father once agreed to a meeting with Richard Cole without telling your mother. He believed he could resolve the property dispute quietly. Eleanor discovered the meeting afterward, and that was when she began keeping copies of the correspondence.""

Marcus sat down.

His father had tried to solve the problem privately.

And the secrecy had allowed the problem to grow.

He looked at Maya's drawing on the coffee table.

Three figures beneath a yellow sun.

A family that no longer looked the way she had imagined.

But a family that could still be built on honesty.

Marcus opened his laptop and began drafting a statement for the company board, explaining the legal dispute and the steps being taken to protect the business.

He would not hide the problem.

He would not misrepresent the evidence.

And he would not allow fear to determine what happened next.

For the first time since the kiss outside Vanessa's office, Marcus felt certain about one thing.

May you like

The truth might destroy the life he had planned.

But it would not destroy the man he had become.
