Chapter 1: The Kiss That Destroyed a Family
“Mommy! WHY ARE YOU KISSING THAT MAN?!””
Eight-year-old Maya Johnson screamed the words so loudly that a woman walking past the office building stopped in her tracks.
Vanessa Johnson froze with her lips still inches from the man she had been kissing.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Marcus Johnson saw his daughter's little hand slipping out of his.
He saw the tears gathering in her wide brown eyes. He saw his wife's lipstick smeared across another man's mouth. And he saw the wedding ring on Vanessa's finger—the same ring he had placed there seven years earlier while promising to love her until death separated them.
Something inside him went frighteningly quiet.
"Vanessa!"" Marcus shouted, charging toward them.
"What the hell is going on?""
The man beside Vanessa quickly stepped back, straightening his expensive navy suit. He looked to be in his late thirties, with neatly styled hair and a silver watch that probably cost more than Marcus's first car.
Vanessa, however, didn't look ashamed.
She looked irritated.
"Marcus? What are you doing here?"" she demanded.
Marcus stopped a few feet away, staring at her.
"What am I doing here?"" he repeated.
"I brought your daughter to surprise you after work. That's what I'm doing here!""
Maya clutched the sleeve of his jacket.
"Daddy," she whispered, her voice breaking.
"Why was Mommy kissing him?""
Marcus looked down at his daughter.
How was he supposed to answer that?
Two hours earlier, Maya had spent twenty minutes choosing which flowers to buy her mother. She had insisted on the pink roses because Vanessa had once told her that pink was her favorite color.
She had even made a card at the kitchen table.
To Mommy, my favorite person in the whole world. I love you more than all the stars.
The card was still tucked inside Marcus's jacket pocket.
He had planned to let Maya deliver it herself.
Instead, she had witnessed the destruction of everything she believed about her family.
"Vanessa," Marcus said, forcing his voice to remain steady, "who is this man?""
The stranger cleared his throat.
"Look, man, I don't think we need to make a scene.""
Marcus slowly turned his head.
"You don't think we need to make a scene?""
"That's right," the man replied.
"Whatever problems you two have, you should handle them privately.""
Marcus almost laughed.
The man had just been kissing his wife in broad daylight, outside her office, and now he wanted privacy.
"What's your name?"" Marcus asked.
Vanessa immediately stepped between them.
"Leave him alone!""
Marcus stared at her.
"You're protecting him?""
"He's my colleague," Vanessa snapped.
"Your colleague?""
"Yes!""
"Do you usually kiss your colleagues like that?""
A few people had begun watching from the sidewalk. One woman slowed down, pretending to search her handbag while keeping her eyes on the confrontation.
Vanessa noticed.
Her face hardened.
"Stop embarrassing me, Marcus!""
Maya let out a small sob.
That sound changed everything.
Marcus turned toward his daughter, crouched, and wiped a tear from her cheek.
"Baby, look at me.""
Maya shook her head.
"Did Mommy stop loving us?""
Marcus's throat tightened.
"No, sweetheart. This isn't your fault.""
"But she kissed him.""
"I know.""
"Did I do something bad?""
Marcus felt as though someone had driven a knife straight through his chest.
He pulled her into his arms.
"No. Never think that. You haven't done anything wrong. Not one thing.""
Behind him, Vanessa exhaled impatiently.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, Marcus. You're making this much worse than it needs to be.""
He slowly stood.
"Much worse?"" he asked.
"Our daughter just watched you kiss another man, and you're worried about how this looks?""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You're always so dramatic.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
She glanced at the stranger.
He touched her elbow.
"Vanessa, maybe we should go.""
Marcus noticed the gesture.
So did Maya.
Her little face crumpled again.
"Mommy, please come home with us," she begged.
"We can pretend we didn't see it. I won't tell Grandma. I promise.""
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
For one brief moment, something flickered across her face.
Then she turned back to Marcus.
"I am not going anywhere with you until you learn to respect my personal life.""
Marcus blinked.
"Your personal life?""
"Yes! I'm tired of you questioning everything I do!""
He looked at the man standing beside her.
"Does your personal life have a name?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"His name is Adrian.""
Adrian offered Marcus a stiff nod, as though they were being introduced at a business luncheon rather than the scene of a marital betrayal.
"Adrian Cole," he said.
"I work with Vanessa.""
"How long?"" Marcus asked.
"That's none of your business," Vanessa interrupted.
Marcus looked at her wedding ring.
"Seven years of marriage, a mortgage, a daughter, and apparently none of this is my business.""
"Don't you dare speak to me like that!""
"Then give me one honest answer. Are you having an affair with him?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Adrian looked away.
The silence was answer enough.
Marcus nodded once.
"All right.""
He adjusted Maya in his arms and reached for the little bouquet she had dropped on the pavement. Several pink petals had been crushed beneath someone's shoe.
He picked up the flowers anyway.
Then Vanessa made one final mistake.
She reached toward Adrian as Marcus stepped past them, placing herself directly in front of her lover.
"Don't you dare touch him!"" she screamed.
Marcus stopped.
He hadn't even moved toward Adrian.
He was simply trying to leave.
He looked at Vanessa for a long moment, searching her face for the woman he had married.
"So you're choosing him over your husband and your own daughter?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Maya buried her face against Marcus's shoulder and began to cry harder.
Marcus turned away.
He didn't threaten Adrian. He didn't beg Vanessa to reconsider. He didn't demand that she come home.
He simply carried his daughter to the car.
Behind him, Vanessa called out, "Marcus! Don't you walk away while I'm talking to you!""
He kept walking.
"Marcus!""
He buckled Maya into her seat, carefully wiped her cheeks with a tissue, and placed the crushed roses beside her.
"Daddy?"" she whispered.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Are we still a family?""
Marcus gripped the steering wheel.
He wanted to promise her that everything would be fine. He wanted to tell her that her mother had made a terrible mistake and would come running home to apologize.
But he had spent seven years protecting Vanessa from consequences.
He would not teach his daughter that love meant accepting betrayal.
"We're a family because I love you," he said gently.
"And that will never change.""
Maya nodded, but her eyes remained fixed on the office building.
As Marcus started the engine, his phone vibrated.
An unfamiliar number had sent him a message.
*I saw what happened outside Vanessa's office. If you want the truth about your wife, meet me tonight. Come alone.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*And whatever you do, don't sign anything she gives you.*
He looked at his daughter in the rearview mirror.
Vanessa had just destroyed their marriage in front of their child.
May you like
But apparently, the kiss was only the beginning.
And someone out there knew exactly why.
