Chapter 2: Sign These Papers!

At 7:18 that evening, Marcus was sitting on the edge of Maya's bed, watching her pretend to read a fairy tale.

She had been on the same page for almost fifteen minutes.

Every few seconds, her eyes drifted toward the bedroom door.

"Sweetheart," Marcus said softly, "do you want me to read it to you?""

Maya shook her head.

"Can you just stay here?""

"Of course.""

He moved closer.

She placed the book on her lap, her small fingers twisting the corner of a page.

"Daddy?""

"I'm listening.""

"If Mommy doesn't love you anymore, does that mean she doesn't love me anymore either?""

Marcus closed his eyes for a second.

He had prepared himself for anger, legal battles, financial complications, and even the possibility that Vanessa might try to take their house.

He hadn't prepared himself for this.

"No, baby. Whatever happens between your mother and me, you deserve love. You deserve to feel safe. And nobody gets to make you feel like you have to earn that.""

"But she didn't even hug me.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"No," he admitted quietly.

"She didn't.""

Maya stared at her book.

"Maybe she was mad because I interrupted.""

Marcus immediately took her hands.

"Listen to me. You did not interrupt anything you should have been ashamed of. You saw something that hurt you, and you asked a question. That's what you're supposed to do.""

"Will Mommy come back?""

He swallowed.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

It was the first time he had ever admitted to his daughter that he didn't know how something would end.

She leaned against him.

He held her until her breathing slowed and her eyes finally closed.

Only after making sure she was asleep did Marcus step into the hallway.

His phone was still in his hand.

The unknown message glowed on the screen.

Don't sign anything she gives you.

He read it again.

Then he opened his laptop and pulled up the digital records for Johnson Development Group, the company he had built over eleven years.

Most people knew Marcus as a quiet construction entrepreneur who drove an ordinary SUV and preferred jeans to designer suits.

They didn't know that his company owned commercial buildings across three states.

They didn't know that the apartment complex Vanessa liked to call our little investment generated more annual income than some companies made in a decade.

And they certainly didn't know that Marcus had spent the previous six months restructuring his business after discovering irregularities in several financial accounts.

At the time, he had believed those irregularities were caused by an incompetent accountant.

Now, he wasn't so sure.

He opened a folder marked *LEGAL REVIEW — CONFIDENTIAL*.

Inside were property deeds, corporate ownership records, and a report prepared by his attorney, Daniel Brooks.

Marcus clicked on the report.

One line had been highlighted in yellow.

*Unauthorized transfer attempts: three.*

He leaned closer to the screen.

Three attempts?

He had known about only one.

Before he could investigate further, headlights swept across the living room curtains.

A car door slammed outside.

Then came the sound of Vanessa's heels striking the front steps.

Marcus closed the laptop.

The front door flew open.

Vanessa marched into the living room carrying a thick stack of documents. Her hair was perfectly arranged, her makeup flawless, and her designer handbag hung from one arm.

She looked nothing like a woman who had spent the afternoon shattering her family.

She looked like someone arriving to collect a debt.

"Where is Maya?"" she demanded.

"Asleep.""

"Good. We need to talk.""

Marcus remained seated.

"Then talk.""

Vanessa marched to the coffee table and slammed the documents down so hard that a framed photograph toppled over.

It was a picture from Maya's fifth birthday.

Marcus looked at it lying face down.

Vanessa didn't.

"Sign these papers," she ordered.

"I want my share of everything.""

Marcus slowly raised his eyes.

"What papers?""

"Property division documents. There's a list of the houses, the investment accounts, the company assets, and the properties we acquired during our marriage.""

He glanced at the first page.

A proposed settlement.

A demand for a substantial cash payment.

And a section requiring him to transfer partial ownership of several commercial properties into Vanessa's name.

He read the document twice.

Then he looked at her.

"So you finally remembered something, Vanessa. You can't touch those assets without my signature.""

"Exactly. So sign them.""

Marcus leaned back.

"You're not getting a single penny. And when you find out what I did this afternoon, you'll understand why.""

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time that evening, her confidence faltered.

"What did you do?""

Marcus said nothing.

She snatched the top document from the table.

"Don't play games with me! These properties were acquired during our marriage. I have rights!""

"Some of them were. Some weren't. That's why your attorney should have checked the ownership records before sending you here with this.""

Vanessa's face reddened.

"Don't lecture me about business!""

"Then don't lecture me about assets you haven't bothered to understand.""

She slapped the papers against her palm.

"Adrian says you're bluffing.""

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at her.

"Adrian?""

Vanessa realized what she had said.

Her fingers tightened around the documents.

"He understands these things," she muttered.

"Of course he does.""

"He's a financial consultant. He knows what a woman is entitled to after a marriage ends.""

Marcus let out a slow breath.

"Does he also know you're still married to me?""

"Don't twist my words!""

"I'm not twisting anything. You brought me divorce-related property documents hours after I caught you kissing him, and now you're telling me he helped you prepare them.""

Vanessa tossed the pages onto the table.

"Fine! Yes, he helped me. At least he respects my intelligence.""

Marcus studied her face.

"How long has this been going on?""

"That isn't relevant.""

"Six months?""

She looked away.

"A year?""

"Stop interrogating me!""

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

A year.

Their daughter had spent an entire year asking when Mommy would come home early enough to help with bedtime stories.

For a year, Vanessa had kissed Maya goodbye before work, told Marcus she had late meetings, and complained about how exhausted she was.

And all that time, she had been building another life.

"Did you bring Maya to your office parties?"" Marcus asked.

Vanessa frowned.

"What?""

"Did you ever take her there while Adrian was around? Did you introduce him to our daughter?""

"Why are you asking such ridiculous questions?""

"Because she thought you were the most wonderful woman in the world this morning.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Oh, here we go. You're going to use Maya against me.""

Marcus stood.

"No. I'm going to protect her from being used by either of us.""

"You're unbelievable!""

She shoved the documents toward him.

"Sign them. I am not leaving this marriage with nothing.""

Marcus looked at the papers.

Then he looked at his wife.

"You already left this marriage emotionally. Today, you simply made it impossible for me to pretend otherwise.""

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

"Fine. If you won't sign voluntarily, I'll take you to court.""

"That's your choice.""

"And I'll make sure everyone knows what kind of man you really are!""

Marcus almost smiled, but there was no humor in it.

"Please do.""

She stopped.

"What is that supposed to mean?""

"It means you should be very careful about what you ask people to investigate.""

Vanessa stared at him for several seconds before turning toward the door.

Then she stopped again.

"One more thing. Adrian and I are serious. I won't let you ruin my future because you're jealous.""

Marcus's voice was quiet.

"Then build your future honestly.""

She stormed out.

The door slammed behind her.

For several seconds, Marcus remained perfectly still.

Then he picked up the papers she had left behind.

The settlement was not merely aggressive.

It contained property descriptions, account balances, and ownership percentages that Vanessa had no legitimate reason to know in such detail.

Some of the figures were accurate.

Others were deliberately misleading.

And one property listed as a shared marital asset was owned by a separate company established years before Marcus had married Vanessa.

Someone had gone through his records.

Someone had assembled a detailed financial picture of his life.

And someone was trying to make him sign away control before he understood what was happening.

His phone rang.

Daniel Brooks's name appeared on the screen.

Marcus answered immediately.

"Tell me you have the documents.""

"I have them," Daniel replied.

"And Marcus, we have a serious problem.""

Marcus walked toward the window.

"How serious?""

"I reviewed the latest transfer requests. The signature authorization was submitted under your name, but the supporting paperwork suggests someone has been preparing to move assets without your consent.""

Marcus's grip tightened around the phone.

"Who submitted it?""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said, "The company representative listed on the request is Vanessa Johnson.""

Marcus stared into the darkness outside.

"Can you prove it was her?""

"Not yet. The electronic submission came through an account connected to her, but I want to verify the audit trail before making that accusation.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Freeze every pending transfer. Secure the records. Don't contact her.""

"Already done. There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Someone requested an urgent review of your company's ownership structure this afternoon. They were trying to determine whether your properties could be transferred before a divorce filing.""

Marcus went completely still.

"Who made the request?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"The inquiry came through a firm associated with Adrian Cole.""

Marcus looked down at Vanessa's settlement documents.

Now he understood why the unknown sender had warned him.

The kiss had been personal betrayal.

The paperwork suggested something far more calculated.

"Daniel," Marcus said, "I want every document connected to Vanessa and Adrian. Every authorization, every transfer attempt, every communication we can lawfully obtain.""

"I'll start immediately.""

"And Daniel?""

"Yes?""

"Don't assume this ends with the two of them.""

The call ended.

Marcus returned to the table and gathered the documents into a neat stack.

Then he noticed something he hadn't seen before.

On the final page, beneath the proposed settlement terms, was the name of a second attorney.

A woman he recognized.

Not because he had ever hired her.

But because she had represented his business partner in a lawsuit three years earlier.

Her name was *Evelyn Shaw*.

And Evelyn Shaw had lost that case after trying to conceal millions of dollars in fraudulent transactions.

Marcus reached for his phone again.

Before he could dial Daniel, another message appeared from the unknown number.

*You found Evelyn's name, didn't you?*

A second message followed.

*Ask Vanessa what happened to your father's original property deeds.*

Marcus stopped breathing for a moment.

His father had died five years earlier.

And the original deeds to the land that had funded Marcus's first business had disappeared shortly before the funeral.

May you like

He had always believed the documents were lost in the estate paperwork.

Now, for the first time, he wondered whether they had ever been lost at all.
