Chapter 9: The Person Who Knew Everything

I didn’t open the envelope.

Not right away.

I stared at the name.

My mind refused to accept it.

Because the person who wrote that letter was someone I had never suspected.

Someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.

Someone who knew every birthday.

Every childhood memory.

Every secret.

My hands went numb.

“Jessica?””

Ryan’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

His expression changed.

“Knew what?””

I held up the envelope.

“You knew this existed.””

Ryan went completely still.

That was my answer.

My anger came back instantly.

“You knew.””

“I knew your father left something.””

“You knew where it was?””

“No.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

Ryan looked at the envelope.

“Because I know who wrote it.””

The room became silent.

My mother covered her mouth.

David looked away.

I felt like I was watching my life collapse in slow motion.

“Tell me.””

Ryan hesitated.

“Jessica…”

“Tell me.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Your father’s lawyer wrote that letter.””

I frowned.

“The lawyer?””

“Yes.””

“What’s wrong with that?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Your father’s lawyer died two years ago.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?””

Ryan nodded.

“He died before he could deliver the truth.””

I looked down at the envelope.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then how did it get here?””

Nobody answered.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

A message.

Short.

Direct.

Jessica,

Your father was not destroyed by one person.

He was destroyed by everyone who chose silence.

I read it again.

Everyone who chose silence.

The next line made my heart stop.

The money was never the real betrayal.

The company was never the real target.

The real target was you.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Ryan stepped closer.

“I don’t know.””

David suddenly grabbed the paper.

I pulled it away.

“No.””

His face tightened.

“Jessica, you don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice changed.

Urgent.

“Your father spent months trying to stop this.””

“Stop what?””

He looked at my mother.

Then Ryan.

Then me.

“Someone was trying to take control of your life.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your inheritance.””

My stomach dropped.

“My inheritance?””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“Your father created a trust before he died.””

“I know.””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t.””

The room felt smaller.

“What are you saying?””

David answered.

“The trust wasn’t only money.””

“Then what was it?””

He looked at the papers.

“Ownership.””

I frowned.

“Ownership of what?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“Everything.””

I felt dizzy.

My father wasn’t just protecting money.

He was protecting something bigger.

Something everyone wanted.

Something worth destroying a family over.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From the unknown number that called me.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A picture of my father.

Standing in front of his office.

But he wasn’t alone.

Someone stood beside him.

Someone I recognized.

The caption underneath said:

*Your father discovered the truth three days before he died. Ask yourself why he never told you.*

I zoomed in on the picture.

And my heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person standing beside my father…

Was me.
