Chapter 18: The Final Person I Trusted
I didn’t run.
Not immediately.
Because I was tired of running from answers.
I had spent years believing my life was simple.
My father died.
My mother grieved.
My friends stayed.
My family protected me.
Now I knew every single one of those things was incomplete.
So I stood there.
And I looked at the person in the doorway.
Ryan.
My heart sank.
“Why are you here?””
His face was full of panic.
“Jessica, listen.””
My father stepped between us.
“No.””
Ryan stopped.
My father stared at him.
“You shouldn’t have followed her.””
Ryan looked hurt.
“I was trying to protect her.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words cut.
Even Ryan knew it.
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Ryan took a breath.
“I saw you leave.””
“And?””
“I knew where you were going.””
“How?””
He looked away.
That answer hurt.
“You tracked me.””
“No.””
“Then how?””
Silence.
My father answered.
“Because Ryan always knew where you were.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
My father looked at Ryan.
“You still have access.””
Ryan’s face changed.
“To what?””
My father didn’t answer.
And then I remembered.
The trust.
The documents.
The accounts.
The things everyone wanted.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me you’re not involved.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I’m not.””
“Then why does my father think you are?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Because I made another mistake.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Another secret.
“What mistake?””
Ryan looked at my father.
“I gave Susan information.””
The room went silent.
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because she said she could help Jessica.””
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You gave her information about me?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I didn’t know what she was planning.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“I know.””
My father picked up the flash drive.
“This is what she wanted.””
Ryan looked at it.
“What is it?””
“The proof.””
“Proof of what?””
My father looked at me.
“The entire plan.””
I stepped closer.
“Whose plan?””
My father didn’t answer.
He plugged the drive into an old laptop on the workbench.
Files appeared.
Documents.
Emails.
Recordings.
Then one folder.
The name made my blood freeze.
*Jessica*
I opened it.
Inside were years of information.
My school records.
My travel history.
My finances.
My personal life.
Someone had been watching me.
Tracking me.
Preparing.
“This isn’t about the company,” I whispered.
My father looked at me.
“No.””
“It’s about me.””
He nodded.
The workshop door suddenly slammed shut.
We all turned.
The lights flickered.
Then the laptop screen changed.
A video began playing.
A woman appeared.
Susan.
My aunt.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Jessica.””
I froze.
It was recorded for me.
“I know you’re going to hate me.””
My hands shook.
“But you need to understand something.””
The video continued.
“Your father thinks I betrayed him.””
A pause.
“He’s wrong.””
My father stepped closer.
“What?””
Susan continued.
“The person who destroyed this family was never me.””
The screen flickered.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“It was the person who convinced your father to disappear.””
I looked at my father.
He looked confused.
Then the video ended.
A final message appeared.
*Ask your father who told him to trust me.*
Nobody moved.
Because suddenly we all understood.
The betrayal didn’t begin with Susan.
May you like
It began with the person who introduced her.
And my father knew exactly who that person was.
