Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Tried To Bury
I didn’t cry.
That surprised me.
After everything I had learned, after seeing the evidence, after hearing my own mother admit she had been connected to the accident that almost killed me, I expected tears.
I expected screaming.
I expected to break.
But instead, I felt nothing.
Just emptiness.
The kind of emptiness that comes when your entire life turns out to be built on things you never questioned.
My mother reached toward me.
I stepped away.
That movement hurt her.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t stop myself.
“Jessica…”
“Don’t.””
My voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
“I need you to stop saying my name like you still know me.””
She covered her mouth.
“I am your mother.””
I looked at her.
“That’s the problem.””
The room went silent.
Ryan looked at the floor.
David stood near the window.
Thomas watched everyone carefully.
Everyone had something to say.
Everyone except me.
I picked up the police report again.
“You said the brakes failed.””
My mother nodded through tears.
“Yes.””
“Because you damaged them?””
Her face changed.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
She looked at Thomas.
That made my stomach twist.
“Mom.””
She swallowed.
“I didn’t know.””
“You already said that.””
“I didn’t know someone else had changed them.””
The room went quiet.
I stared.
“What?””
My mother wiped her face.
“The night of the crash, I wanted to stop your father from leaving.””
“Leaving where?””
“Taking you away.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he found out about the money.””
My chest tightened.
“So this was all because of money?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“It started because of money.””
I waited.
She continued.
“Then it became something else.””
“What?””
She looked down.
“Fear.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
My father had always been the strongest person I knew.
But now I wondered how long he had been fighting alone.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Your father realized the money wasn’t the real problem.””
I looked at him.
“Then what was?””
He looked at the notebook.
“Control.””
Nobody spoke.
“Your father built something valuable,” Thomas continued.
“Something people wanted access to.””
“The company?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
Thomas looked directly at me.
“You.””
The word made me uncomfortable.
“My father’s company had nothing to do with me.””
“Your father made sure it did.””
Ryan finally spoke.
“Jessica, your father created the trust because he knew someone would try to take control after he died.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he thought telling you would put you in danger.””
I laughed quietly.
“Funny.””
Nobody reacted.
“Keeping secrets worked out perfectly.””
Ryan looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A single sentence.
*Ask Thomas why your father stopped trusting him.*
I looked up.
Everyone noticed my expression.
“What?”” David asked.
I turned the phone around.
Thomas went completely still.
Ryan noticed.
“You know.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
His jaw tightened.
“Your father was complicated.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“He stopped trusting me because he thought I betrayed him.””
“Did you?””
Silence.
The silence was different this time.
Not fear.
Guilt.
I took a step back.
“Oh my God.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Jessica—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps telling me they were protecting my father. Protecting my mother. Protecting me.””
I pointed around the room.
“But nobody ever says they were honest.””
My mother started crying again.
Ryan looked away.
David clenched his jaw.
Thomas remained silent.
And that silence told me something.
There was still another layer.
A deeper secret.
“Why did Dad stop trusting you?””
Thomas looked at the notebook.
Then at me.
“Because I found out who was behind everything.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then said:
“Someone your father loved more than anyone.””
My breathing stopped.
“Who?””
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
Toward the family photos.
Toward the memories of a life that no longer felt real.
Then he answered.
“Your father’s closest friend.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Ryan.
May you like
And Ryan’s face changed.
Because he already knew the name.
