Chapter 19: The Person Who Started Everything

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The workshop was silent except for the old laptop fan humming on the table.

My father stared at the frozen screen.

The last words from Susan’s video stayed in my mind.

*Ask your father who told him to trust me.*

I looked at him.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything else.

My father had faced impossible situations.

He had survived things he never talked about.

But now he looked like a man who had just found a memory he spent years trying to forget.

“Who was it?”” I asked.

He closed his eyes.

“Jessica…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I found him alive, I saw something worse than fear.

Shame.

“The person who brought Susan into our lives…”

He stopped.

I waited.

“Was me.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What?””

My father sat down slowly.

“Years ago, before you were old enough to understand, Susan was struggling. She had financial problems. She was desperate.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

He looked at the floor.

“It explains why I thought I could save her.””

I felt a cold feeling move through me.

“You trusted her.””

“Yes.””

“And she betrayed you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does Susan say someone convinced you to trust her?””

My father looked toward the door.

“Because someone did.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Dad.””

His voice became quiet.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather?””

He nodded.

“Before he died, your grandfather warned me about someone.””

“Who?””

“My grandfather’s business partner.””

I frowned.

“But he’s dead.””

My father looked at me.

“Not everyone disappears the way they say they do.””

The words made my stomach tighten.

“Who was he?””

My father opened another file on the laptop.

A document appeared.

A name.

A company record.

A signature.

And then I saw it.

A name I recognized.

Not from my family.

From my childhood.

From old conversations.

From every story my father told about how he built his life.

I whispered:

“Thomas?””

My father nodded.

“He was the person who introduced Susan.””

I looked toward the workshop door.

Thomas.

The man who claimed he was helping us.

The man who brought the notebook.

The man who knew every secret.

“He was behind everything?””

My father shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

“Thomas was trying to control the damage.””

“That’s not better.””

“No.””

My father sighed.

“He made mistakes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone does.””

The pain in my voice made him look away.

“Your father,” I said, “your mother, Ryan, Susan, Thomas…”

I counted them.

“Everyone says they made mistakes.””

I looked at him.

“But I’m the one who had to live with the consequences.””

My father nodded.

“You’re right.””

The fact that he admitted it almost broke me.

Then the workshop door opened.

Ryan stepped inside.

I turned sharply.

“What are you doing here?””

His eyes moved to my father.

“Because someone else is coming.””

My father stood.

“Who?””

Ryan looked at me.

“David.””

I frowned.

“My uncle?””

Ryan nodded.

“He knows your father is alive.””

The room changed.

My father immediately looked at the flash drive.

“How?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Because he was the one who found the workshop.””

My heart sank.

“He followed me.””

“Yes.””

My father grabbed the drive.

“Jessica, you need to leave.””

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I am done being protected by people who refuse to tell me anything.””

My father looked at me.

For a moment, he saw the little girl he used to carry on his shoulders.

Then he saw the woman I had become.

“You’re exactly like your mother.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled sadly.

“Stubborn.””

For the first time in days, I almost smiled.

Almost.

Then we heard footsteps outside.

Slow.

Confident.

A voice came from the other side of the door.

“Brother.””

My father went completely still.

Because he recognized the voice.

David.

“Open the door.””

My father looked at me.

And whispered:

“The truth is finally here.””

May you like

The door handle moved.

And this time, nobody knew who would walk through.
