Chapter 8: The Man Who Came Back From The Dead

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The voice came again.

“Ethan, I know you’re down there.””

My entire body went cold.

My father.

Dead for six years.

Standing above us.

Impossible.

Michael grabbed my shoulder.

“Don’t answer.””

But I couldn’t stop staring at the door.

The person who had haunted my childhood memories.

The person I had buried.

The person I had blamed for everything.

Claire whispered:

“He’s not supposed to be here.””

I looked at her.

“You said he was alive?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

The basement door opened wider.

A shadow appeared.

Then a man stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“Ethan.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“Dad?””

My father looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

The anger came before the shock.

“You’re sorry?””

He looked at Michael.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

“I know what you think.””

“I think you’re dead.””

He nodded.

“I wanted you to believe that.””

The words destroyed me.

“You wanted me to think you were dead?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked toward the stairs.

“Because it was the only way to keep Daniel from finding me.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You abandoned me.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me suffer.””

“I know.””

“Fifteen years.””

A tear rolled down my father’s face.

“I know.””

I hated that his sadness affected me.

I hated that a part of me still wanted my father to explain everything.

“Tell me the truth.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

A loud crash came from upstairs.

My father looked toward the ceiling.

“We don’t have much time.””

“Start talking.””

He looked at Michael.

“Your brother discovered Daniel’s operation.””

“What operation?”” I asked.

“Daniel wasn’t just moving money.””

My father’s voice lowered.

“He was controlling identities.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He erased people.””

The room went quiet.

“Changed records. Destroyed histories. Made people disappear legally.””

Michael nodded.

“That’s how he hid me.””

My father looked ashamed.

“I helped him.””

The confession hit hard.

“Why?””

“Because I was weak.””

He looked at me.

“When Daniel threatened your mother, I gave in.””

I froze.

“My mother?””

“She knew too much.””

Michael looked at the letter.

“She wrote the truth.””

My father nodded.

“She did.””

“Then why didn’t you protect her?””

My father looked away.

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer disgusted me.

“You let everyone suffer because you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

No excuses.

No defense.

Just guilt.

And somehow that made it worse.

Claire whispered:

“Dad…”

He looked at her.

“I’m sorry I failed you too.””

The basement door suddenly shook.

Daniel was outside.

My father turned serious.

“Listen carefully.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel has one weakness.””

“What?””

“He believes nobody can betray him.””

Michael frowned.

“What does that matter?””

“Because the person closest to him has been gathering evidence for years.””

Everyone looked confused.

My father looked at Claire.

“Tell them.””

Claire went still.

“What?””

“You know what I mean.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Claire.””

Her face changed.

Slowly, she reached into her jacket.

She pulled out a small device.

A recording device.

“I’ve been recording Daniel for three years.””

My eyes widened.

“Why didn’t you show anyone?””

“Because I needed proof.””

She looked at me.

“Real proof.””

The basement door exploded open.

Everyone jumped.

Men rushed inside.

Daniel Cross walked behind them.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

He looked exactly like the kind of man who never believed consequences applied to him.

“Well.””

His eyes moved around the room.

“What a touching reunion.””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

Daniel smiled.

“You were always dramatic, Robert.””

Then he looked at me.

“Ethan.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

“I’ve waited a long time to meet you properly.””

I stared at him.

“You destroyed my family.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“No.””

He smiled.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Then he looked at Claire.

“And you disappointed me.””

Claire tightened her grip on the recorder.

Daniel sighed.

“I always knew you would.””

My father stepped forward.

“You’re finished.””

Daniel laughed.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Ethan still doesn’t know the biggest secret.””

My stomach dropped.

“What secret?””

Daniel smiled.

“The reason your brother disappeared.””

He paused.

“It wasn’t because he discovered my crimes.””

Everyone went silent.

May you like

Daniel took one step closer.

“It was because he discovered what your mother did.””
