Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Disappearance
I couldn’t breathe.
For a few seconds, the world stopped making sense.
My father had been dead for six years.
But Michael looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not mistaken.
Terrified.
“Ethan, we have to leave,” Michael said.
I stared at him.
“My father is dead.””
Michael grabbed my shoulders.
“Listen to me.””
His voice shook.
“Everything you know about that night is a lie.””
The footsteps outside grew closer.
Lily moved beside me.
“Dad?””
I looked down at her.
She was scared.
I hated that she had been pulled into something she never should have known existed.
I took her hand.
“We’re leaving.””
We moved quickly toward the car.
But before we reached it, Michael stopped.
He stared at me.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“I didn’t disappear because I wanted to.””
“I know.””
“No, Ethan. You don’t.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Your father made sure nobody would ever find me.””
I felt anger rising.
“You’re talking about a man who raised me.””
Michael nodded.
“And that’s why you never saw it.””
The SUV engine started.
We got into the car and drove away.
Only when we were several streets away did I finally speak.
“Tell me everything.””
Michael stared out the window.
“When I found out what Dad was doing, I tried to stop him.””
“What was he doing?””
“He was moving money. Hiding evidence. Using people.””
I frowned.
“My father owned a construction company.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“That was the story.””
He looked at me.
“Your father was involved with people who could destroy lives.””
I remembered childhood moments differently now.
The locked office.
The late-night phone calls.
The strangers who came to our house.
The way my father always told me:
“Some things are better left unknown.””
Michael continued.
“I found documents proving he was responsible for people disappearing.””
My stomach turned.
“And you?””
“I became one of them.””
Lily squeezed my hand.
“Uncle Michael, where did they keep you?””
Michael looked at her.
“I don’t know the exact place.””
“What?””
“I was moved constantly.””
He looked ashamed.
“Basements. Empty buildings. Places where nobody would hear me.””
I felt sick.
“Who helped him?””
Michael looked away.
“That’s the part you won’t like.””
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
Michael nodded.
“No.””
“She didn’t know everything.””
“Then why was she hurting Lily?””
His expression changed.
“Because she was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
Michael looked at me.
“Scared that Lily would lead you to me.””
The silence was unbearable.
I pulled the car over.
“Why would Vanessa care?””
Michael hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this before I escaped.””
I opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
My father.
Vanessa.
And another man I didn’t recognize.
On the back of the photo were five words:
The plan is still active.
My hands shook.
“When was this taken?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Two months ago.””
I looked at him.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael didn’t blink.
“Ethan…”
“What?””
“The person behind everything…”
He pointed at the photograph.
“Isn’t dead either.””
I looked at the picture again.
At the unknown man standing beside my father.
Then I saw the name written in tiny letters beneath the photo.
A name I recognized.
A name that made my blood turn cold.
May you like
Because it belonged to the person I trusted more than anyone.
Vanessa’s father.
