Chapter 6: The Room Beneath The House
We left the motel in under three minutes.
No arguments.
No questions.
Just survival.
Vanessa drove.
I sat beside her, holding the phone with Lily’s picture still displayed.
My hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
“They’re close,” Michael said from the back seat.
“I know.””
“No.””
His voice was sharper.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at him through the mirror.
“I understand enough.””
“They aren’t trying to scare you.””
His face was pale.
“They’re trying to make you panic.””
“Why?””
“Because scared people make mistakes.””
I hated that he sounded experienced.
Because he was.
He had lived this nightmare.
Lily slept in the back seat, exhausted from everything she had seen.
I looked at her reflection.
My daughter.
The person who had accidentally uncovered a fifteen-year-old secret.
All because she gave food to a starving man.
A few hours later, we arrived at my childhood home.
The house where I grew up.
The house my father sold after my mother died.
The house Richard bought two years later.
I stared at it.
“You knew this place existed?””
Vanessa nodded.
“My father bought it.””
“Why?””
She looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Michael stepped out.
“I do.””
We walked inside.
The house looked untouched.
Old furniture.
Old pictures.
Old memories.
It felt like stepping into the past.
Michael walked directly toward the basement door.
“You remember this?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“You should.””
He touched the handle.
“This is where everything started.””
The door opened.
The basement smelled like dust and old wood.
Michael moved toward the wall.
Then stopped.
“There.””
I looked.
Nothing.
Just bricks.
“What?””
He pressed his hand against one section.
A hidden panel opened.
Lily gasped.
“What is that?””
A small room.
Hidden behind the wall.
Inside was a desk.
Boxes.
Old documents.
And a photograph.
I picked it up.
My mother.
Standing beside Michael.
Holding a folder.
On the back was written:
If Ethan ever finds this, tell him the truth.
My heart raced.
I opened the folder.
Inside were dozens of pages.
Bank records.
Names.
Dates.
And one handwritten letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
Ethan, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
My vision blurred.
I continued reading.
Your father was not the man you believed him to be.
I stopped.
Michael looked away.
He already knew.
The letter continued.
But the person who destroyed our family was not your father alone.
I turned the page.
The next sentence made my entire body go cold.
The person closest to you has been watching you since childhood.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Ethan…”
I kept reading.
Richard Hale was never my enemy.
My breath caught.
What?
The letter continued.
He was trying to stop Daniel Cross.
Michael stepped back.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
The basement door suddenly slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A voice came from upstairs.
A voice I knew.
A voice I had heard at family dinners.
A voice that belonged to someone I trusted.
“Ethan.””
Vanessa went pale.
“No…”
The person walked down the stairs slowly.
Holding a gun.
Michael whispered:
“She found us.””
I stared.
Because the person standing there wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been beside me every day.
Someone who had smiled while hiding the truth.
And then she said:
“I’m sorry, Ethan.””
“Your mother was right.””
May you like
I froze.
Because the person holding the gun was my sister.
