Chapter 4: The Family Secret Buried In Silence

I stared at the photograph until the ink blurred.

Vanessa’s father.

Richard Hale.

The man who had smiled at my wedding.

The man who had given a speech about loyalty, family, and protecting the people you love.

The same man who had placed a hand on my shoulder and told me, “Ethan, you’re lucky. Vanessa chose a good man.””

Now I was looking at proof that his family had been hiding a nightmare for fifteen years.

“No,” I whispered.

Michael watched me carefully.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

“You don’t know anything.””

“Yes, I do.””

I looked up sharply.

“Don’t tell me what I’m thinking.””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“Because I thought the same thing.””

The anger inside me faded for a second.

Because I remembered.

Michael had lost fifteen years of his life.

I had only lost a few hours of trust.

“Tell me how Richard is involved.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“When I discovered what your father was doing, I went to him first.””

“Why?””

“Because he was still our father.””

The words hit me.

Even after everything, Michael still wanted to believe there was something good left.

“What did he do?””

“He begged me to stop digging.””

“Begged?””

Michael laughed without humor.

“He cried, Ethan.””

I froze.

“My father cried?””

“He told me he had made mistakes. That he had gone too far. That there were people above him who couldn’t be challenged.””

“Then why didn’t he go to the police?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because he wasn’t afraid of them.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“He was afraid of Richard.””

I looked back at the photograph.

The three people standing together.

My father.

Richard.

A stranger.

“Who is the third person?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

“That’s Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is he?””

“The man who controlled everything.””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“Your father handled the money. Richard handled the people. Daniel handled the fear.””

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting silently in the back seat, holding the stuffed rabbit I had bought her.

I hated that she had heard any of this.

I hated that adults had dragged her into a world of lies.

“Michael, why didn’t you escape sooner?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I tried.””

The car became silent.

“Many times.””

He looked out the window.

“The first time, I made it to a road.””

His fingers tightened.

“I thought someone would help me.””

“What happened?””

“Someone did.””

I waited.

“Then they called Richard.””

My stomach turned.

“He had people everywhere.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“How did you survive?””

Michael looked at Lily.

“Because I kept remembering that I had a little brother.””

My eyes burned.

“You remembered me?””

“Every day.””

The answer came instantly.

“I remembered you stealing cookies from Mom’s kitchen. I remembered you crying when Dad yelled. I remembered you following me everywhere asking questions.””

A small smile appeared.

“You were annoying.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Then my phone rang.

The screen showed Vanessa.

I stared at it.

Michael’s expression changed.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“She’s my wife.””

“And she’s connected to them.””

I answered anyway.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Ethan, where are you?””

“Why?””

“Because you’re in danger.””

I looked at Michael.

“Are you warning me?””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised me.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then:

“Because I never wanted this to happen.””

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Vanessa.””

“I know about Michael.””

The world went still.

I looked at my brother.

“You knew?””

“I found out years ago.””

My voice dropped.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

A long pause.

“Because my father threatened our daughter.””

I closed my eyes.

Lily.

Everything came back to her.

The fear.

The anger.

The way Vanessa had reacted when Lily helped Michael.

She wasn’t just angry.

She was terrified.

“What did he threaten?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He said if you ever found Michael, Lily would disappear too.””

My blood went cold.

Michael leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

I ended the call.

Not because I didn’t want answers.

Because I suddenly knew Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something.

Someone else was listening.

Someone else was watching.

And whoever that person was…

They knew we had found Michael.
