Chapter 8: The Night My Mother Died

Celeste sat down as though her legs could no longer support her.

For several seconds, the only sound in the private library was the ticking of an antique clock.

I stared at her.

"What do you mean, it wasn't an ordinary accident?""

Celeste looked at Daniel.

Then she looked at me.

"Eleanor called me the night she died. She was frightened. She said someone had been following her.""

"Who?""

"She wouldn't tell me over the phone. She asked me to meet her at the studio.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Did you go?""

"Yes.""

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

"Tell her everything.""

Celeste's eyes flashed.

"You have no right to judge me.""

"Then stop making her ask questions.""

I stepped forward.

"Celeste.""

She lowered her head.

"When I arrived, Eleanor was arguing with Robert Vale. Adrian's father.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"At the studio?""

"Yes. He was demanding the original partnership agreement. Eleanor refused to hand it over.""

"Was Adrian there?""

Celeste hesitated.

"Yes.""

I gripped the back of a chair.

"What happened?""

"Robert threatened to destroy the foundation. Eleanor told him she would expose the financial transfers and report the forged documents.""

I could barely breathe.

"Then?""

"They left. Your mother was furious. She told me she was going to meet Daniel the following morning to finalize the transfer of the archive into your trust.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"She never arrived.""

I looked at him.

"What happened to her?""

"Her car was found off a country road. The official report blamed poor visibility and wet conditions.""

I remembered that night.

The phone ringing at midnight.

My father crying in the kitchen.

The hospital corridor.

My mother's cold hand beneath the white sheet.

I had been seventeen.

Everyone told me it was an accident.

I had believed them.

"Did someone tamper with her car?""

Daniel looked at Celeste.

She nodded slowly.

"An independent mechanic found evidence of interference with the braking system. But the report disappeared before it could be submitted to the authorities.""

My knees weakened.

"Who knew?""

"Me, Daniel, and your father," Celeste whispered.

I looked at her.

"My father?""

"Your father knew something was wrong. He tried to investigate, but he received threats. He was afraid that if he continued, you would become a target.""

I shook my head.

"He never told me.""

"He thought silence would protect you.""

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

It showed my mother standing beside a black car outside the studio.

A man stood near the driver's door.

I recognized him.

Robert Vale.

"Why didn't you go to the police?"" I asked.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Because the people who arranged the investigation controlled the evidence. And after Eleanor died, I was framed for stealing the partnership funds.""

"You disappeared to escape?""

"Yes. I knew they would come after me next.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Did Adrian know?""

Daniel nodded.

"He knew his father had met Eleanor that night. He also knew I was supposed to meet her the next morning.""

My hands trembled.

"Then why did he marry me?""

Daniel's answer came quietly.

"Because he needed access to the inheritance.""

The room seemed to close around me.

Eleven years.

Eleven years of dinners, holidays, anniversaries, and promises.

Had my entire marriage been an elaborate business strategy?

I turned toward Celeste.

"Did you know that?""

"No," she said quickly.

"I knew Adrian had become dangerous. I didn't know he had married you for that reason.""

Daniel looked at me.

"There's something else.""

He removed a small envelope from his jacket.

"Eleanor gave this to me two days before she died. She told me to keep it safe until you were old enough to understand.""

I took it.

My name was written across the front.

The handwriting was unmistakably hers.

Inside was a letter and a small brass key.

I opened the letter.

My dearest Claire,

If Daniel has given you this letter, then the people I feared have succeeded in keeping the truth from you.

I want you to know that nothing I built was ever more important than you.

The Bennett-Cross foundation belongs to you, but it was never intended to make you rich. It was created to protect people who cannot protect themselves against powerful interests.

There is a second archive beneath the old atelier. The key will open the cabinet.

Inside, you will find the original agreement and the names of everyone who participated in the attempt to steal our work.

Trust Celeste, but do not ask her to carry your decisions.

And Claire, never confuse forgiveness with permission.

I read the final sentence several times.

Then I looked at the key.

"There's an archive beneath the studio?""

Daniel nodded.

"Your mother built it herself.""

"What's inside?""

"The original agreements, the financial records, and a recording.""

Celeste suddenly stood.

"No.""

I turned toward her.

"What?""

"That archive must remain sealed until we understand what it contains.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Why?""

"Because the recording could destroy people who have nothing to do with this.""

"People who helped cover up Eleanor's death?""

Celeste looked at me.

"Claire, your mother was trying to protect you.""

I held up the letter.

"She wanted me to find it.""

Celeste's eyes filled.

"I know.""

"Then why are you trying to stop me?""

She looked away.

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Because Celeste has a reason to fear what is inside.""

I turned toward him.

"What reason?""

He took another photograph from his folder.

This one showed Celeste standing outside the studio on the night my mother died.

She was holding a document.

And beside her stood Adrian.

I stared at the photograph.

"Celeste?""

She didn't answer.

"Why were you with Adrian that night?""

Her lips trembled.

"I was trying to stop him.""

"Stop him from doing what?""

"Taking the original agreement.""

"Did you know about the brakes?""

Celeste looked at me.

Then she began to cry.

"No, Claire. I swear I didn't know.""

I wanted to believe her.

But the photograph had changed everything.

Daniel closed his folder.

"We should leave. Someone knows we're here.""

As if summoned by his words, Julian's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"What?""

A pause.

"Are you certain?""

He looked at me.

"Mrs. Vale, the police have just searched Adrian's penthouse.""

My stomach tightened.

"Why?""

"Because Vanessa Hart has filed a formal complaint.""

"Against Adrian?""

Julian nodded.

"She's accusing him of financial fraud, coercion, and threatening her after she discovered the real ownership structure.""

I stared at Celeste.

"Where is she now?""

"Under police protection.""

Then Julian added something that made my heart stop.

"She has also handed over a recording of Adrian discussing your mother's death.""

Three hours later, we listened to the recording in Julian's office.

Adrian's voice was unmistakable.

"Once Claire signs the final transfer, the old archive becomes irrelevant.""

A second voice answered.

I recognized it as Robert Vale.

"And what if she refuses?""

Adrian laughed.

"She won't. She trusts me.""

Robert sounded irritated.

"Your mother-in-law was harder to manage.""

A pause followed.

Then Adrian spoke.

"That's why we can't afford another Eleanor.""

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I felt something inside me break.

Celeste covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at the table.

Julian slowly removed his glasses.

I stood.

"Play it again.""

"Claire—"

"Play it again!""

Julian pressed the button.

Adrian's voice filled the room.

That's why we can't afford another Eleanor.

I closed my eyes.

For eleven years, I had slept beside a man who knew what had happened to my mother.

A man who had stood beside me at her funeral.

A man who had held my hand while I cried.

When the recording ended, I opened my eyes.

"Where is Vanessa?""

Julian answered.

"At a secure location.""

"Take me to her.""

Celeste stood.

"Claire, you need to rest.""

I picked up my mother's letter.

"I've rested for eleven years.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Tomorrow, we're opening the archive.""

He nodded.

Then my phone rang.

A message appeared from Adrian.

*I know you've been talking to Daniel. Bring the original agreement to the old atelier tomorrow night, or I'll make sure you learn what really happened to your father.*

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Julian.

"My father?""

He went completely still.

May you like

Because nobody in that room had mentioned my father since the conversation began.

And Adrian had just revealed that he knew something we didn't.
