Chapter 2: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave
Celeste Moreau led me away from the main hall and into a private lounge overlooking the Seine.
The room was quiet, decorated with antique furniture and framed photographs from decades of Paris fashion history.
I recognized one photograph immediately.
My mother, Eleanor Bennett, stood beside a much younger Celeste. Both women were laughing, their arms linked, with bolts of emerald-green silk stacked behind them.
I hadn't seen my mother's face so clearly in years.
"She was beautiful," Celeste said.
I touched the photograph.
"She was everything to me.""
Celeste poured two glasses of water.
"Your mother was more than a talented designer, Claire. She was one of the most brilliant businesswomen I ever knew.""
I smiled sadly.
"She never talked about business. She spent most of her time making clothes in our little studio.""
"That was what she wanted you to believe.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Celeste sat down.
"Eleanor founded a private investment company before she married your father. She used it to finance several emerging fashion houses, including the company that eventually became Vale Group.""
I frowned.
"Adrian's company?""
"Yes.""
I sat opposite her.
"That's impossible. Adrian founded Vale Group twelve years ago.""
Celeste gave me a long look.
"Adrian founded the public-facing company. Your mother financed the original operation.""
I tried to process her words.
"My mother died before Adrian and I got married.""
"She died six months before the wedding. But she had been working with Adrian long before that.""
I remembered Adrian's early stories.
He had always claimed he met my mother at a charity exhibition. He said she admired his ambition and introduced him to influential investors.
I had never questioned it.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"Because she wanted you to have a normal life. She knew Adrian was ambitious, and she believed he loved you.""
Celeste paused.
"Unfortunately, she was wrong about the kind of man he would become.""
I looked down at my hands.
"What exactly did she leave me?""
Celeste opened a leather folder.
Inside were several documents, each bearing my mother's signature.
One page contained a corporate structure chart. Another listed a private trust. A third showed an ownership agreement.
My eyes stopped at a number.
*51%.*
I looked up.
"What is this?""
"Your mother's controlling interest in the original holding company. It was transferred into a trust for you.""
"Fifty-one percent of Vale Group?""
"Not exactly. Fifty-one percent of the holding company that controls the voting rights of Vale Group.""
My mouth went dry.
"Does Adrian know?""
"He knows someone controls the majority voting interest. He's spent years trying to identify the beneficiary.""
I stared at the documents.
"Why would he hide that from me?""
Celeste's expression became grim.
"Because the moment you understand your position, his control over the company ends.""
I remembered the strange financial documents Adrian had occasionally brought home.
The late-night phone calls.
The way he always insisted I sign certain papers without reading them.
Suddenly, little details began connecting in my mind.
"Celeste, he made me sign something last year. He said it was a routine update to our estate planning.""
"What did it say?""
"I don't know. He told me the lawyers needed my signature before a deadline.""
Celeste closed her eyes briefly.
"Did you sign?""
"Yes.""
She removed another document from the folder.
"Then we need to find out exactly what he did.""
Before she could continue, my phone vibrated.
A message from Adrian.
*Where are you? Vanessa needs you in the main hall. Stop wandering around.*
I stared at the screen.
Even now, he was ordering me around.
Celeste noticed the message.
"Does he always speak to you like that?""
"Only when he thinks nobody important is watching.""
"Then perhaps it's time somebody important watched.""
She picked up her phone and called someone.
"Julian? It's Celeste. I need the original trust documents, the 2015 shareholders' agreement, and the amended voting-rights schedule. Tonight.""
A pause.
"Yes. Eleanor's daughter is here.""
She ended the call.
I leaned forward.
"Who is Julian?""
"Our solicitor. He has represented your mother’s estate for twenty years.""
I glanced toward the window.
Paris glittered beneath us.
I should have felt powerful.
Instead, I felt sick.
My husband had lied to me for years. He had used my mother's money to build his reputation while making me believe I was merely his decorative wife.
Then Celeste said something that made the room feel suddenly colder.
"Claire, there's another problem.""
"What?""
"Your mother placed a condition in the inheritance agreement. You cannot simply take control because you are the beneficiary.""
I frowned.
"What condition?""
Celeste slid a page toward me.
"Your mother required the beneficiary to remain independent of any person attempting to obtain control through marriage, coercion, or fraudulent transfer.""
I read the paragraph twice.
"Why would she include that?""
Celeste looked directly into my eyes.
"Because Eleanor suspected Adrian might eventually try to take what belonged to you.""
My chest tightened.
"She knew?""
"She had concerns. She asked me to protect you if anything happened.""
I felt tears gathering.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she made me promise not to interfere unless there was evidence of wrongdoing.""
Celeste reached across the table.
"And Claire, I believe we finally have that evidence.""
A knock interrupted us.
Julian entered carrying a black leather briefcase.
He was a distinguished man in his sixties, with thin silver glasses and an expression that suggested he rarely delivered good news.
"Madame Moreau," he greeted her.
Then he turned to me.
"Mrs. Vale. I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances.""
He placed three folders on the table.
"I reviewed the documents your mother left. There is a serious issue involving your husband's recent corporate transactions.""
"What issue?""
Julian opened the first folder.
"Mr. Vale has been attempting to transfer voting rights from your mother's trust into a separate holding company.""
I stared at him.
"Can he do that?""
"Not without your authorization.""
"Then why is he doing it?""
Julian hesitated.
"Because he believes he already has your authorization.""
He showed me a copy of a document.
At the bottom was my signature.
I recognized it immediately.
But the signature was attached to a clause I had never seen.
A clause transferring my beneficial rights to a company controlled by Adrian.
My fingers went numb.
"That's not what I signed.""
Julian nodded.
"I suspected as much.""
Celeste stood.
"Then we have our answer.""
But Julian wasn't finished.
"There is something else, Claire.""
He removed a final document from his briefcase.
It was dated three weeks earlier.
And it contained a request for an emergency transfer of the trust's controlling shares.
The person who had submitted it was listed as the authorized representative.
*Vanessa Hart.*
I looked at Celeste.
Then at Julian.
"Why is my husband's mistress involved in my inheritance?""
May you like
Julian's expression darkened.
"Because, Mrs. Vale, Mr. Adrian Vale appears to have been preparing to make her the legal controller of the company.""
