Chapter 6: The Lie That Destroyed My Family

By eight the following morning, the story had reached the fashion press.

A photograph of Vanessa wearing my mother's emerald necklace appeared on the front page of a popular Paris fashion publication.

The headline read:

*VALE GROUP FACES OWNERSHIP CRISIS AFTER SECRET TRUST DISPUTE.*

Another publication had gone further.

*WHO REALLY OWNS ADRIAN VALE'S FASHION EMPIRE?*

I sat in Celeste's apartment, watching the television while a reporter stood outside Vale Group headquarters.

"Investors are reportedly demanding an emergency meeting after documents surfaced suggesting that the company's controlling interests may belong to a private family trust.""

Celeste switched off the television.

"Enough.""

I looked at her.

"Adrian will blame me.""

"He can blame whoever he likes. It won't change the documents.""

Julian entered carrying a stack of printed emails.

"I've reviewed the initial financial records. We have a serious development.""

I stood.

"What now?""

"Several payments from Vale Group were transferred to a company registered in the Cayman Islands.""

"Whose company?""

"That's the interesting part. The registered owner is a nominee director, but the beneficial ownership appears to connect to an entity called Asterion Holdings.""

Celeste frowned.

"Asterion?""

Julian nodded.

"Does that name mean anything to you?""

Celeste looked at me.

"Your mother mentioned it shortly before she died.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What is it?""

"An investment company that approached Eleanor with an offer to purchase her controlling interest in Vale Group.""

"Did she accept?""

"No. She refused.""

Julian placed a document on the table.

"According to these transactions, Vale Group has transferred nearly eighteen million dollars to Asterion over the past two years.""

I stared at the number.

"Eighteen million?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"We don't know yet.""

My phone rang.

This time, it was Adrian.

I answered.

"Claire.""

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Careful.

"We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"Everything that's happened.""

I looked at Celeste.

"Go ahead.""

"I've spoken to my lawyers. They're telling me there are some misunderstandings regarding the trust.""

"Misunderstandings?""

"Yes. I want you to come home so we can resolve this like adults.""

I almost laughed.

"You want me to come home?""

"Claire, don't be difficult.""

There he was.

The same man.

The same tone.

The same assumption that I would eventually surrender.

"Why did you forge my signature?""

Silence.

Then he sighed.

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Did you?""

"I was restructuring the company's ownership. You signed the documents.""

"I signed an estate planning update. Not a transfer of my inheritance.""

"Your memory is confused.""

I looked at the copy Julian had placed in front of me.

"My signature is on a document transferring my mother's controlling interest to a company you own.""

"Because that's what we agreed.""

"No, Adrian. That's what you told me.""

His voice hardened.

"Listen carefully. If you continue this, the company will collapse. Thousands of people depend on me.""

"Then perhaps you should have stopped stealing from it.""

He lowered his voice.

"You don't understand the consequences.""

"Then explain them.""

Another silence.

Finally, he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Your mother wasn't the innocent woman you think she was.""

I gripped the phone.

"What does that mean?""

"She made promises to people. Dangerous people. She built the company on arrangements she couldn't keep.""

"Who?""

"Ask Celeste.""

I turned toward the older woman.

She was watching me carefully.

Adrian continued.

"Your mother knew the company was in trouble. She knew the investors wanted their money back. She left me to deal with the consequences.""

"That's not what the documents say.""

"Documents can be manipulated.""

"Did you forge her signature too?""

He didn't answer.

Then his voice softened.

"Claire, I loved you. I still do. Don't let these people destroy our marriage.""

I closed my eyes.

"You gave my mother's necklace to Vanessa.""

"That was a mistake.""

"You gave her my seat.""

"That was business.""

"You planned to transfer my inheritance to her.""

"That was a corporate arrangement.""

I opened my eyes.

"And what was our marriage, Adrian?""

He said nothing.

I ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Celeste sat beside me.

"Eleanor was not involved in anything illegal," she said quietly.

"How do you know?""

"Because I was there.""

She looked toward the window.

"Twenty-five years ago, your mother was approached by a group of private investors. They wanted to acquire her design archive and use it to create a luxury fashion conglomerate. She refused.""

"Why?""

"Because they intended to strip independent designers of their intellectual property and turn their work into disposable commercial products.""

I remembered my mother's words.

Never let anyone tell you that creativity belongs to the person who has the most money.

Celeste continued.

"Your mother established a separate foundation to protect the archive. Adrian's father agreed to a partnership because he needed her financing. But years later, Adrian began negotiating with the same investors.""

"Asterion Holdings?""

"Yes.""

Julian examined the emails again.

"I've found something.""

He placed a printed message on the table.

It was dated eleven months earlier.

The sender was Adrian.

The recipient was an executive at Asterion Holdings.

The subject line read:

*FINAL TRANSFER — BENNETT INTEREST.*

I began reading.

Once the marital transfer is completed, Claire will have no remaining voting rights. Vanessa will serve as the public-facing beneficiary until the acquisition closes. Afterward, we can consolidate the archive and remove the remaining restrictions.

I read it twice.

"Vanessa was never supposed to own anything.""

Julian shook his head.

"She appears to have been a temporary instrument in the transaction.""

I felt sick.

Adrian hadn't simply betrayed me for another woman.

He had used another woman to steal from me.

And once the transfer was complete, he intended to discard her.

Celeste took the paper from my hands.

"There is something else you should see.""

She opened the blue portfolio and removed a folded letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My mother's.

"This is the letter Sophie mentioned," Celeste said.

I unfolded it carefully.

Adrian,

You have misunderstood my generosity as weakness. I gave you the opportunity to build something extraordinary because I believed you understood the value of loyalty.

You have mistaken my silence for ignorance.

I know about the negotiations with Asterion. I know about the false invoices. And I know you have been attempting to obtain Claire's signature without explaining what you are asking her to surrender.

If you continue, I will withdraw my support and disclose everything.

Claire must never become collateral for your ambition.

I stopped reading.

My hands were shaking.

"She knew," I whispered.

Celeste nodded.

"She discovered the scheme shortly before she died.""

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"She was preparing to. But she became ill, and the situation deteriorated quickly.""

I looked at the final lines.

If you are reading this, Claire, please remember something.

You are not responsible for saving a man who is determined to destroy what you love.

Tears blurred the page.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For years, I had wondered whether my mother had approved of Adrian.

Now I understood why she had grown quiet whenever I spoke about him.

She hadn't been disappointed in me.

She had been afraid for me.

Julian cleared his throat.

"There's one final development.""

I looked up.

"Another one?""

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Adrian entering a private meeting room with a man in a gray suit.

The date was three days before my mother's death.

"Do you recognize the other man?"" Julian asked.

I studied his face.

I didn't.

But Celeste did.

Her glass slipped from her hand and struck the carpet.

"That's impossible.""

I turned toward her.

"Who is he?""

She looked at me, her face drained of color.

"His name is Daniel Cross.""

"Who is Daniel Cross?""

Celeste swallowed.

"He was your mother's business partner before Adrian's father ever entered the picture.""

Julian nodded slowly.

"And according to the original ownership records, Daniel Cross was the other person who signed the founding agreement.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Why would he be meeting Adrian?""

Celeste's voice became barely audible.

"Because Daniel was officially declared dead fifteen years ago.""

She paused.

"Claire, your mother didn't just leave you an inheritance.""

She pointed to the photograph.

"She left you a secret involving a man who was never supposed to come back.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*Your mother didn't die believing Adrian would betray her. She died knowing someone else had already betrayed them both.*

A second message followed.

*Meet me tomorrow. Come alone. Ask about Daniel Cross.*

Then a photograph arrived.

May you like

It showed an elderly man standing outside a London hotel.

And around his neck was a silver chain bearing the same emerald emblem engraved on my mother's blue portfolio.
