Chapter 3: The Mistress's Name on My Inheritance

I read Vanessa's name again.

And again.

It looked absurd on the page.

Vanessa Hart, the woman who had just worn my mother's necklace in front of hundreds of cameras, was listed as the proposed controller of the trust that belonged to me.

"How long has this been happening?"" I asked.

Julian removed his glasses.

"Based on the records, the first attempt was made eight months ago.""

Eight months.

Eight months of Adrian kissing me goodbye in the morning, asking about my day, and pretending our marriage was perfectly normal.

Eight months of planning to take my inheritance.

"Why Vanessa?"" I asked.

Celeste answered before Julian could.

"Because Adrian cannot transfer the trust directly to himself without triggering the independence protections your mother established.""

"And Vanessa can?""

"Not legally. But he may have believed he could use her as an intermediary.""

Julian opened another folder.

"There's evidence that Mr. Vale intended to appoint Ms. Hart as the sole director of a newly established holding company. That company would then receive the voting rights if the transfer succeeded.""

I stood and walked to the window.

Below us, Paris moved as if nothing had happened.

A taxi stopped outside a hotel. A couple crossed the street, laughing. Somewhere in the distance, church bells rang.

I thought about the eleven years I'd spent building a home with Adrian.

The holidays we had celebrated.

The birthdays.

The private promises.

I remembered him sitting beside my mother's hospital bed, holding my hand while she took her final breath.

He had cried that night.

Had any of it been real?

"Claire," Celeste said gently, "you don't have to make a decision tonight.""

I turned.

"Yes, I do.""

Julian studied me.

"What would you like to do?""

I looked down at the documents.

"First, stop the transfer.""

Julian nodded.

"That can be done through an emergency injunction, provided we establish that the authorization was obtained fraudulently.""

"Do it.""

"Second?""

I took a breath.

"Find out what Adrian has been doing with the company's money.""

Julian's expression changed.

"That could take time.""

"Then start tonight.""

Celeste gave a small approving nod.

"There's Eleanor's daughter.""

My phone began ringing.

Adrian.

I let it ring twice before answering.

"Where are you?"" he demanded.

"I'm in the private lounge.""

"Why?""

"Having a conversation.""

"With whom?""

"People who actually know my family.""

Silence.

Then his voice changed.

"Claire, don't do anything foolish. Vanessa has been asking about you.""

I almost laughed.

"How thoughtful of her.""

"Listen to me. The necklace is staying with her tonight. We'll discuss it when we get home.""

"No, Adrian. We won't.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means the necklace belongs to me.""

He sighed impatiently.

"You're being ridiculous. It's a piece of jewelry.""

"It's my mother's.""

"And I paid for its restoration.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same argument he had used for years whenever I challenged him.

He believed that spending money gave him ownership over everything.

"Adrian, I want you to bring the necklace back.""

"Claire, stop.""

"No.""

His voice dropped.

"Don't forget who you are.""

I looked at the photograph of my mother beside Celeste.

For the first time in eleven years, I knew exactly who I was.

"I haven't forgotten," I said.

Then I ended the call.

Celeste smiled faintly.

"Good.""

We returned to the main hall twenty minutes later.

The runway show was about to begin.

Adrian stood near the VIP section, surrounded by investors and journalists. Vanessa was beside him, wearing my mother's emerald necklace and holding a champagne glass.

She spotted me first.

Her smile disappeared.

Adrian followed her gaze.

"Claire. Finally.""

He approached with an irritated expression.

"Where have you been?""

"Talking.""

"About what?""

"Business.""

He gave a short laugh.

"Since when do you discuss business?""

I looked at him calmly.

"Since I discovered you were discussing mine.""

His smile vanished.

For one brief second, I saw fear in his eyes.

Then he recovered.

"Whatever you've been told, you don't understand the situation.""

"Then explain it.""

"Not here.""

"Why not? You seemed comfortable discussing my marriage here.""

A nearby journalist glanced in our direction.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Claire, please. This is a professional event.""

I turned toward her.

"Then why are you wearing my family jewelry?""

She touched the necklace.

"Adrian gave it to me.""

"I know. You mentioned that.""

"He's allowed to give me gifts.""

"Not stolen ones.""

Her cheeks flushed.

"How dare you?""

Adrian grabbed my arm.

"Enough.""

I looked down at his hand.

"Let go.""

He released me.

"You're embarrassing yourself.""

Celeste appeared beside me.

"Mr. Vale.""

Adrian's expression changed immediately.

"Madame Moreau. What a pleasure.""

"Is it?""

He offered his hand.

Celeste ignored it.

"I've been speaking with Claire.""

Adrian forced a smile.

"Wonderful. I hope she's been enjoying the evening.""

"Not particularly. Especially after discovering what you've been doing with Eleanor's trust.""

The color drained from his face.

He glanced at me.

"What did you tell her?""

Celeste's voice was icy.

"The truth.""

Vanessa looked between them.

"What trust?""

Adrian ignored her.

"Madame Moreau, I think there's been a misunderstanding.""

"Then you'll have no objection to explaining why your company submitted a fraudulent transfer request three weeks ago.""

A photographer nearby lowered his camera.

Adrian stepped closer to Celeste.

"This is a private matter.""

"Not anymore.""

He looked around.

Several investors had begun watching.

"Claire," he said through clenched teeth.

"We need to leave. Now.""

I didn't move.

"I'm staying.""

His eyes narrowed.

"You don't know what you're doing.""

"Actually, Adrian, I think I'm beginning to understand everything.""

Vanessa suddenly touched his arm.

"Adrian, what is she talking about?""

He turned sharply.

"Not now, Vanessa.""

But she had already noticed the documents in Julian's hands.

"Why is my name on those papers?""

Nobody answered.

She took a step backward.

Adrian grabbed her wrist.

"Stop talking.""

That was when Celeste said something that made Vanessa go completely still.

"Miss Hart, did Mr. Vale tell you that you were going to become the owner of a fashion empire?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"He said I would have a controlling position.""

"And did he tell you the shares were stolen from his wife?""

Vanessa's face went pale.

"Stolen?""

Adrian's voice thundered.

"That's enough!""

The orchestra stopped.

The room fell silent.

Every face turned toward us.

Celeste didn't flinch.

"Mr. Vale, I suggest you lower your voice. The people standing around you are precisely the people who will need to hear what happens next.""

Adrian looked at the investors.

Then at Julian.

Then at me.

For the first time that evening, he seemed unable to control the room.

He leaned toward me and whispered.

"You have no idea what you've just started.""

I met his eyes.

"Neither did you.""

Julian stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale, there's one more matter.""

He opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

"An emergency injunction has been prepared to freeze the disputed transfer pending an investigation. The trust's legal representatives have also requested access to Vale Group's financial records.""

Adrian stared at the envelope.

"You can't do that.""

Julian remained calm.

"We can. And we will.""

Adrian looked at me as though he were seeing a stranger.

"Claire, you're going to destroy everything we've built.""

I glanced at Vanessa's necklace.

"No, Adrian. I'm going to find out what you built with my mother's money.""

Then Julian placed the final document on the table.

It was a copy of an old agreement signed by Eleanor Bennett, Celeste Moreau, and Adrian Vale.

At the bottom was a clause neither Adrian nor Vanessa appeared to have anticipated.

Celeste read it aloud.

"Should any attempt be made to fraudulently transfer the beneficiary's controlling interest, all executive appointments made under the original financing agreement shall become subject to immediate review and suspension.""

Adrian went completely still.

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Julian closed the folder.

"It means your husband may have just triggered a clause that allows the trust to remove him from his position as chief executive.""

Vanessa dropped her champagne glass.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Adrian didn't look at her.

He was staring at the document.

Then, for the first time since I'd known him, my husband whispered a word I had never heard him say.

"Impossible.""

Celeste leaned toward him.

"One more thing, Adrian.""

He slowly raised his eyes.

"Your father knew Eleanor was the majority shareholder. And he signed the same agreement.""

Adrian's face turned ashen.

Because there was only one reason his father had never told him the truth.

May you like

*Adrian hadn't inherited the empire he thought he owned. He had been allowed to run it.*

And now the woman he'd humiliated in front of Paris was about to decide whether he would ever run it again.
