Chapter 9: The Missing Signature

The old presidential suite occupied the hotel's top floor, behind a private corridor that had been closed to guests during renovations.

Danielle arrived with Marcus, Thomas, and two police officers. Michael followed several steps behind, his face drawn and his hands trembling.

The suite's entrance stood open.

A strip of broken brass lay near the lock, and dust from the unfinished renovation coated the floor. Inside, the furniture had been covered with white protective sheets. The fireplace remained intact, its dark marble surround polished despite the construction dust.

Danielle approached it slowly.

"This is where my mother kept her private office," she said.

Thomas nodded.

"She used this suite whenever she wanted to work away from the executive floor.""

"Who had access?""

"Your mother, you, Michael, and a small number of senior staff.""

Danielle turned toward him.

"Did you give someone your key?""

Thomas looked genuinely shaken.

"No. My master key was stored in the secure cabinet downstairs.""

"Then how did someone use it?""

"We'll need to examine the access records.""

One of the officers called from the adjoining room.

"Mrs. Brooks, you should see this.""

The small office behind the sitting room had been searched thoroughly. Drawers were open, papers lay scattered across the desk, and a framed photograph of Danielle's mother had been knocked face down onto the carpet.

Danielle picked it up.

Her mother was smiling in the picture, standing outside the first hotel the family had ever owned.

Beside her stood a younger Danielle and Michael.

They had been happy then.

Their father was still alive. The business consisted of three modest properties, and the family had eaten Sunday dinner together every week.

Danielle placed the photograph upright.

"Did they take anything else?"" she asked.

The officer pointed toward the fireplace.

"Someone removed the panel behind the mantel.""

A section of dark marble had been pulled away, exposing a narrow compartment.

It was empty.

Danielle crouched beside it.

"Was there a safe inside?""

Thomas shook his head.

"Not that I know of.""

Michael stood in the doorway, staring at the compartment.

Danielle noticed.

"You knew this was here.""

He looked away.

"Mom showed it to me once.""

"When?""

"About a month before she died.""

"What did she keep inside?""

Michael hesitated.

"The original ownership agreement. And a letter.""

"What letter?""

"She said it explained why the agreement couldn't be changed without your consent.""

Danielle slowly stood.

"Why didn't you tell me this yesterday?""

Michael looked at the floor.

"Because Richard told me the agreement had already been destroyed.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to believe him.""

"That's not the same thing.""

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

"No. It isn't.""

Danielle turned toward the officers.

"Can you determine when the compartment was opened?""

"We're processing the area for fingerprints and examining the damage," one replied.

"But whoever did this knew exactly where to look.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"Mrs. Brooks, I need to tell you something.""

Danielle looked at him.

"What?""

"Yesterday, after you asked me to preserve the financial records, I received a call from an attorney representing Richard Hale. He claimed there was a potential legal dispute involving the original ownership agreement.""

"Did you tell him where it was kept?""

"No.""

"Did you tell him this suite existed?""

Thomas paused.

"Yes. But only because he said he needed to inspect documents connected to a previous investment proposal.""

Danielle stared at him.

"You gave Richard Hale's attorney access to information about my mother's private office?""

"I didn't know he intended to break in.""

"Did you give him your key?""

"No.""

"Then who did?""

Thomas looked toward the corridor.

Before he could answer, Marcus entered holding a tablet.

"Mrs. Brooks, we've recovered a fragment of security footage from the service elevator.""

He turned the screen toward her.

The recording showed a man wearing a dark maintenance uniform entering the corridor at 5:12 a.m. His face was partially hidden by a cap, but he carried a small black case.

The man stopped outside the presidential suite.

Then he took a key from his pocket.

The door opened.

Danielle leaned closer to the screen.

"Can you identify him?""

"Not yet," Marcus replied.

"But the key appears to be an executive master key.""

Thomas looked stunned.

"Only four master keys are authorized for this floor.""

"Where are they?"" Danielle asked.

"One is assigned to me. One is held by security. One is kept in the emergency cabinet. The fourth belongs to the head of engineering.""

"Who is that?""

"Daniel Mercer.""

Marcus checked the employee database.

"He's been with the hotel for eleven years. His access card was used to enter the service elevator at 5:08 a.m.""

"Where is he now?""

Marcus's expression tightened.

"He hasn't reported for work.""

Danielle looked at the recording again.

The man entered the suite carrying a case and left eleven minutes later without it.

Whoever he was, he had gone directly to the hidden compartment.

He hadn't been searching.

He had known exactly what he wanted.

"Contact the police," Danielle said.

"I want a formal search for Daniel Mercer and a complete audit of every key assigned to this floor.""

Marcus nodded and stepped into the corridor.

Then Danielle turned toward Thomas.

"Has Daniel ever worked for Richard Hale?""

Thomas frowned.

"Not officially.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Thomas looked down at the tablet.

"Three years ago, he was temporarily assigned to a construction project at one of Richard's properties. The contract was approved through our facilities department.""

"Was he paid by Richard's company?""

"I don't know.""

"Find out.""

Thomas left to contact the facilities team.

Danielle looked at Michael.

"Tell me about the letter Mom kept in the compartment.""

Michael rubbed his face.

"She said the agreement had been created after Dad died. It protected the family's voting shares from being transferred without your approval. But there was another condition.""

"What condition?""

"If either of us tried to use the company to settle a personal debt, the independent trustee could suspend our authority over the family trust.""

Danielle stared at him.

"You knew that clause existed?""

"Yes.""

"And you still used company funds to help Richard?""

"I didn't understand how far he would take it.""

"You understood enough to hide it.""

Michael looked away.

Danielle's anger was quiet now, which seemed to frighten him more than shouting would have.

"Do you know who the independent trustee is?""

Michael shook his head.

"Mom never told me.""

Danielle's phone rang.

The caller was Evelyn Carter.

"Danielle, I'm downstairs. I brought the envelope your mother left with me.""

"Please come up to the executive floor. I'll meet you.""

Within minutes, Evelyn entered the suite carrying a small brown envelope. Her eyes immediately moved to the damaged fireplace and the scattered papers.

"Oh, Danielle," she whispered.

"What have they done?""

Danielle took her hand.

"Did Mom ever tell you the name of the independent trustee?""

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"She did. She said the trustee was the only person who could enforce the agreement if the family betrayed its terms.""

"Who is it?""

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter addressed to Danielle, a photograph, and a folded legal document.

She handed Danielle the letter.

"Your mother told me that if anyone tried to take the company from you, I should give you this.""

Danielle unfolded the paper.

My dearest Danielle,

I am sorry that I waited so long to tell you the truth. I believed I could resolve the matter quietly, without turning our family against itself.

I was wrong.

The original agreement protects more than our shares. It protects the people who work for us and prevents the family trust from being used to silence anyone who speaks out against wrongdoing.

If Michael has become involved in this matter, do not assume he is beyond redemption. But do not allow love to replace judgment.

The person who can help you is the independent trustee. His name is written below.

Danielle looked at the signature.

*Eleanor Whitmore, Senior Partner, Whitmore & Associates.*

She recognized the name.

Eleanor had been her mother's attorney for more than twenty years.

Danielle immediately called the number listed on the letter.

A receptionist answered.

"Whitmore & Associates. How may I direct your call?""

"This is Danielle Brooks. I need to speak with Eleanor Whitmore urgently. It's about my mother's original ownership agreement.""

There was a pause.

"Mrs. Brooks, Ms. Whitmore has been expecting your call.""

Danielle frowned.

"Expecting my call?""

"She instructed us to contact you if anyone attempted to alter the ownership structure of Brooks Hospitality Group.""

Danielle's pulse quickened.

"When did she give that instruction?""

"Almost two years ago, shortly before your mother's death.""

The receptionist lowered her voice.

"Mrs. Brooks, there's something else. Ms. Whitmore has been trying to reach you since yesterday.""

"Why?""

"Because she received a document claiming that you had voluntarily resigned your position and transferred your controlling shares to Northbridge Capital Partners.""

Danielle looked toward Michael.

He had gone completely pale.

The receptionist continued.

"And the document included a witness signature from someone who claims to have been present when your mother changed the original agreement.""

Danielle gripped the phone.

"Who?""

The receptionist hesitated.

Then she read the name.

*Thomas Bennett.*

Danielle slowly turned toward the general manager, who had just returned to the room.

Thomas stopped walking when he saw her expression.

"What is it?"" he asked.

Danielle lowered the phone.

"Eleanor Whitmore says you witnessed a change to my mother's ownership agreement.""

Thomas's face drained of color.

"I never witnessed any such change.""

"Then why is your signature on the document?""

He looked at the papers in Danielle's hand.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

Finally, he whispered, "Because someone forged my signature, too.""

A police officer approached from the doorway.

"Mrs. Brooks, we just received confirmation that Daniel Mercer has been located.""

Danielle turned.

"Where?""

"At the private terminal of Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. He was preparing to board a flight out of the country.""

The officer paused.

"He had a document case with him.""

Danielle felt her heart pound.

"Did you recover it?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

The officer held up a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a folded legal document bearing her mother's signature.

The original ownership agreement.

But as Danielle leaned closer, she noticed something strange.

The signature at the bottom was dated three days before her mother died.

And beneath it was a clause that had never appeared in any copy Danielle had seen.

A clause naming a new beneficiary of the family's controlling shares.

Not Danielle.

Not Michael.

Someone else entirely.

Someone whose name had been deliberately concealed beneath a second sheet of paper attached to the original.

The officer looked at her.

"Mrs. Brooks, we haven't opened the document fully. You'll need to wait until our forensic examiner finishes processing it.""

Danielle stared at the sealed bag.

After two years of believing she understood her mother's final wishes, she was about to discover that the entire family business had been built around a secret.

May you like

And when the officer carefully lifted the second sheet, the first name became visible.

*Victoria Hale.*
