Chapter 8: The Boardroom Betrayal
At 7:38 the following morning, Danielle entered the hotel's executive boardroom carrying Grace in a padded infant carrier.
The conference table gleamed beneath recessed lighting. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Atlanta's skyline, and a long row of leather chairs faced a screen displaying the company's financial performance.
Eight board members were already seated.
Michael stood near the head of the table in a navy suit, speaking quietly with Richard Hale.
Victoria sat beside her husband, dressed in cream silk with a diamond necklace resting against her collarbone.
When Danielle entered, Michael stopped speaking.
For half a second, something resembling guilt crossed his face.
Then it vanished.
"Danielle," he said, forcing a smile.
"I wasn't expecting you to attend.""
She set the infant carrier beside her chair.
"That's interesting. The meeting concerns my position as chief executive officer. Why wouldn't I attend?""
Michael glanced at the board members.
"This is a confidential governance meeting.""
"Then we should have no trouble keeping it confidential.""
Richard rose.
"Perhaps we should allow Michael to explain the situation.""
Danielle looked at him.
"You're not a member of this company's board, Mr. Hale. Why are you here?""
Richard adjusted his cuff.
"I'm here as an adviser to a potential investment partner.""
"Northbridge Capital Partners?""
His expression barely changed, but Victoria's fingers tightened around her handbag.
Michael pulled out a chair.
"Let's not turn this into a confrontation. Everyone is concerned about your well-being.""
"My well-being?""
"You've been through a difficult delivery. You're exhausted. Yesterday's incident was unfortunate, and now you're pursuing a complicated financial investigation while caring for a newborn.""
Danielle stared at him.
"Are you suggesting I can't do my job because I gave birth?""
"I'm suggesting you might need time to recover.""
"Then why did you schedule a vote to remove me before asking whether I wanted a leave of absence?""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"Because the company needs stable leadership.""
"Stable leadership that transfers our shares to a company controlled by Richard Hale?""
Several board members turned toward Richard.
He smiled without warmth.
"I have no idea what you're referring to.""
Danielle placed a folder on the table.
"Then you'll be pleased to review the documents.""
Michael's face darkened.
"This is inappropriate.""
"What's inappropriate is forging my signature.""
She opened the folder and distributed copies of the transfer request.
"These documents show that someone attempted to transfer controlling shares in Brooks Hospitality Group into Northbridge Capital Partners. My signature appears on the authorization, but independent counsel has already identified inconsistencies.""
Board member Helen Price adjusted her glasses.
"Michael, did you authorize this transaction?""
"It was a preliminary restructuring proposal.""
"That isn't what I asked," Helen replied.
Michael looked toward Richard.
Richard remained silent.
Danielle continued.
"The proposed transfer would have removed my family's controlling interest and placed the company under the influence of a private investment group connected to the Hale family.""
One board member turned sharply toward Richard.
"Is that true?""
Richard folded his hands.
"Northbridge is an independent entity. It has explored several possible investments. No transaction has been completed.""
"Because I discovered it," Danielle said.
Michael struck the table with his palm.
"Enough!""
Grace stirred in the carrier.
Danielle immediately lowered her voice.
"Do not raise your voice around my daughter.""
Michael looked around the room, apparently realizing that every board member had noticed his outburst.
He stepped back.
"You're making accusations without understanding the full circumstances.""
"Then explain them.""
Michael glanced toward the screen.
"Our company has faced increasing operational costs. Richard offered a restructuring plan that would protect our assets and secure future growth.""
"By transferring our voting shares?""
"By bringing in capital.""
"Why did you forge my signature?""
"I didn't.""
"Then why does your email say the original agreement is the only obstacle?""
Michael froze.
Danielle placed another document on the table.
It was the email from the corporate archive.
Richard stood abruptly.
"These documents may have been obtained improperly.""
"Our counsel has preserved the originals," Danielle replied.
"The board will receive the complete record.""
Victoria rose from her chair.
"This is ridiculous. Danielle is clearly using her personal dispute with me to attack my husband.""
Danielle turned toward her.
"My personal dispute with you began when you slapped me in front of my newborn daughter.""
Victoria's face reddened.
"And I have already explained that I didn't know who you were!""
"Exactly.""
The room fell silent.
Danielle's voice remained steady.
"You didn't know whether I was wealthy, influential, or connected. You thought I was someone you could humiliate without consequences. Then you discovered I owned the hotel, and suddenly you wanted privacy, apologies, and understanding.""
Victoria opened her mouth.
Danielle continued.
"You are not the center of this investigation, Mrs. Hale. Your behavior exposed a problem. The financial records revealed something much larger.""
Helen Price looked at the other board members.
"I move that the proposed removal of Danielle Brooks be suspended pending an independent review.""
"I second," another director said.
Michael shook his head.
"You cannot do this based on allegations.""
"We can," Helen replied, "when the allegations concern the unauthorized transfer of company assets.""
The vote was taken.
Six members supported suspending the removal process. One abstained. Michael was the only member to oppose the motion.
Richard gathered his papers.
"This board is making a serious mistake.""
Danielle looked at him.
"Then you should have nothing to fear from an independent investigation.""
He gave her a thin smile.
"You think this is over?""
"No. I think it's finally beginning.""
Richard walked toward the door.
Victoria followed, but before leaving, she turned back.
"You should be careful about believing your brother is the only person involved.""
Danielle's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?""
Victoria's smile returned.
"Ask him who arranged the original transfer proposal.""
Then she left.
The boardroom door closed behind her.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Michael stared at Danielle as though he no longer recognized his own sister.
"You've humiliated me," he said quietly.
Danielle looked at him.
"No, Michael. I brought the truth into a room where you expected everyone to accept your lies.""
"You don't understand what I've been trying to do.""
"Then explain it.""
He looked down at the table.
"I was trying to protect us.""
"From what?""
Michael's eyes moved toward the closed door.
"From Richard.""
Danielle felt a chill.
"You're telling me you helped him take control of the company because you were afraid of him?""
Michael rubbed his forehead.
"It started with a loan. Two years ago, I borrowed money to cover losses in one of our properties. I thought I could repay it before anyone noticed.""
"How much?""
"Three hundred thousand dollars.""
Danielle stared at him.
"You borrowed money from Richard Hale?""
"He offered favorable terms. Then the property lost more money, and I couldn't pay him back. He started demanding access to the company's accounts. He said he could make the debt disappear if I helped him restructure the ownership.""
"So you used company funds to pay off your personal debt?""
"I didn't take the money for myself!""
"You authorized payments to his company.""
"Those were meant to buy time.""
Danielle shook her head.
"You put the entire company at risk.""
Michael's eyes filled with tears, but his voice remained defensive.
"I thought I could fix everything before you found out.""
"And when you couldn't?""
He looked at her.
"I kept going.""
The admission settled between them.
Danielle had imagined many explanations for her brother's behavior. She had expected greed, perhaps resentment, perhaps a belief that he deserved more control.
She hadn't expected fear.
But fear did not excuse betrayal.
"Michael, did you send someone into my house?""
He looked up sharply.
"No.""
"Your security credential was used to disable my system.""
"I gave Richard's security consultant access to the property during the renovations. I thought the credentials had been revoked.""
Danielle felt sick.
"You gave a stranger access to my home?""
"He said he needed to inspect the alarm system.""
"Did you know he was photographing Grace's nursery?""
Michael's face went pale.
"No. Danielle, I swear to you, I didn't know about the photograph.""
She searched his face.
He looked frightened.
For the first time, she believed he might be telling the truth about that one thing.
But there was still the missing agreement.
And the threat.
"Where did Mom keep the original ownership document?"" Danielle asked.
Michael's expression changed.
He looked toward the boardroom windows.
"I don't know where it is now.""
"Where did she keep it?""
He swallowed.
"At the hotel. In a place she told me never to touch.""
"Where?""
Michael looked directly at his sister.
"In the old presidential suite. Behind the fireplace panel.""
Danielle went still.
The suite had been closed for renovations for almost a year.
Her mother had used it as a private office before her death.
"Why would someone search my nursery for a document hidden at the hotel?""
Michael didn't answer.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and immediately declined the call.
Danielle noticed the name.
*Richard Hale.*
Michael's phone rang again.
This time, he answered.
"I told you I'm in the meeting," he said quietly.
A voice came through the speaker, loud enough for Danielle to hear.
"You were supposed to get her removed.""
Michael's face drained of color.
Richard continued.
"Do you understand what happens if she finds the original agreement? Everything we've done becomes evidence.""
Danielle slowly reached for her phone and activated its recording function.
Michael glanced at her, then looked away.
"I can't do this anymore," he whispered.
Richard's voice turned icy.
"Then perhaps I should tell your sister what happened to your mother's final signature.""
The call ended.
Danielle stared at Michael.
"What final signature?""
Her brother closed his eyes.
Before he could answer, the boardroom lights flickered.
A security officer rushed through the door.
"Mrs. Brooks, we have a serious problem.""
"What is it?""
"The old presidential suite has been broken into.""
Danielle rose.
"Was anything taken?""
The officer hesitated.
"Yes, ma'am. And the security footage shows someone entering with a key issued to the general manager's office.""
Danielle looked at Thomas, who had just appeared in the doorway.
His face was ashen.
May you like
Because the key had not been issued to Michael.
It had been issued to Thomas Bennett.
