Chapter 2: The Woman Everyone Had Misjudged

Victoria stared at the bodyguard as though he had suddenly begun speaking another language.

“Excuse me?”” she demanded.

The man straightened.

“Mrs. Brooks, your driver is waiting at the east entrance. Mr. Bennett has also been notified that you’re here.””

Victoria pointed at Danielle.

“You’re talking to her?””

The bodyguard’s expression remained professional.

“Yes, ma’am.””

“No, you must be confused.”” Victoria gave a brittle laugh.

“That woman was just asking the receptionist to call the general manager. She’s clearly some kind of walk-in guest who has gotten herself into a misunderstanding.””

The bodyguard looked at the red mark spreading across Danielle’s cheek.

His jaw tightened.

“Mrs. Brooks,” he said carefully, “did someone hurt you?””

Danielle glanced down at Grace.

“She startled my daughter.””

“That isn’t what I asked.””

For the first time, Danielle’s composure faltered.

“She slapped me.””

The lobby seemed to grow colder.

The bodyguard turned toward Victoria.

“Did you strike Mrs. Brooks?””

Victoria lifted her chin.

“She was disrespectful.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

“How dare you interrogate me? I’m Victoria Hale.””

“I heard you the first time.””

A few people near the reception desk exchanged glances.

Victoria’s face flushed.

“Then perhaps you should understand that I’m a very important guest in this hotel.””

The bodyguard remained still.

“And Mrs. Brooks is the owner.””

The words landed like a dropped chandelier.

Someone near the elevators whispered, “Oh, my God.””

Victoria opened her mouth, but no sound emerged.

Danielle adjusted Grace’s blanket and looked at the bodyguard.

“Marcus, please don’t frighten the baby.””

Marcus Reed immediately softened his voice.

“Of course, ma’am.””

He motioned to a female security officer, who approached with a gentle smile.

“Would you like me to take Grace for a moment while you get comfortable?”” the officer asked.

Danielle hesitated, then carefully passed her daughter into the woman’s arms.

“Please keep her away from the noise.””

“Absolutely.””

Only when Grace was safely cradled did Danielle turn back toward Victoria.

The other woman had recovered enough to begin protesting.

“This is absurd! You cannot seriously expect me to believe that someone who dresses like—”

“Finish that sentence,” Danielle said.

Victoria stopped.

Danielle took one step forward.

“You’ve spent the last several minutes insulting my clothes, questioning my right to be here, and accusing me of theft without a single piece of evidence. Then you struck me while I was holding my newborn.””

Victoria touched her own cheek as though anticipating a blow.

“You provoked me.””

Danielle stared at her.

“You hit a woman holding a three-week-old baby because you thought she was beneath you.””

“I was defending the standards of this establishment!””

“No,” Danielle replied.

“You were defending your own prejudice.””

Marcus shifted slightly, ready to intervene if the confrontation escalated.

Danielle noticed.

“It's all right, Marcus.””

She looked directly at Victoria.

“I’m not going to hit you again. I want you to understand something much more important.””

Victoria gave a disbelieving laugh.

“Understand what?””

“That money can buy a room in this hotel. It cannot buy you the right to humiliate another human being.””

The words traveled through the lobby.

A woman near the lounge quietly began recording on her phone.

Victoria noticed the camera.

“Put that away!”” she snapped.

The woman lowered her phone halfway.

“Why? You seemed comfortable doing all this in public.””

Victoria turned to Marcus.

“Have her removed immediately!””

Marcus didn't move.

“I take my instructions from Mrs. Brooks.””

“Then get your manager!””

“Gladly.””

He touched the communication device at his ear.

“Mr. Bennett, please come to the main lobby. We have an incident involving Mrs. Brooks.””

A voice crackled through the device.

“Is she safe?””

“For the moment.””

“I'm on my way.””

Victoria folded her arms.

“This is a ridiculous misunderstanding. I expect an apology from everyone involved.””

Danielle almost smiled.

“Everyone?””

“Yes. Especially her.”” Victoria pointed at Madison.

“She should have told me who you were.””

Madison looked up, startled.

Danielle turned toward the receptionist.

“You did nothing wrong.””

Victoria scoffed.

“She should have warned me that you owned the hotel.””

Danielle's eyes narrowed.

“Would that have changed anything?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Of course it would have.””

“Then your problem isn't how I was treated. Your problem is that you didn't know I had power.””

For several seconds, Victoria had no answer.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

“Fine. I'll call Richard. He knows the chairman of the hotel's investment group. By the time I'm finished, you'll be begging me to forgive this little embarrassment.””

Marcus glanced at Danielle, waiting for direction.

Danielle simply nodded toward Victoria's phone.

“Let her call.””

Victoria's fingers moved furiously across the screen.

“Richard? You need to get down here immediately. There's a woman claiming to own this hotel, and her security team is harassing me.””

She paused to listen.

“Yes, I know what I'm saying! She's some sort of—”

Victoria's expression changed.

“What do you mean, you've heard of her?””

She listened again, her lips parting.

“Richard, stop talking in riddles. Who is Danielle Brooks?””

Across the lobby, the elevator chimed.

A silver-haired man in a charcoal suit stepped out, moving with the urgency of someone who had been running despite his age.

“Danielle!””

General Manager Thomas Bennett hurried toward her.

“I'm so sorry. I should have met you at the entrance.””

Danielle shook her head.

“That's not important right now.””

Thomas looked at her cheek.

His face went pale.

“Who did this?””

Danielle said nothing.

She didn't need to.

Every person in the lobby was already looking at Victoria.

Thomas turned toward her.

“Mrs. Hale, I need you to understand the seriousness of what has happened.””

Victoria swallowed.

“Mr. Bennett, surely we can resolve this privately.””

“We can discuss it in my office after I ensure Mrs. Brooks and her daughter are safe.””

“I didn't know who she was!””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“That is precisely the problem.””

He turned toward the reception desk.

“Madison, preserve the lobby camera footage immediately. Do not allow anyone to delete, alter, or overwrite it.””

“Yes, sir.””

“Marcus, please escort Mrs. Brooks to the private lounge.””

Danielle glanced toward Grace, who had finally stopped crying in the security officer's arms.

“Thank you, Thomas. But before I leave, I'd like one question answered.””

“Anything.””

She looked at Victoria.

“Has this woman ever treated another guest this way?””

Thomas went silent.

His eyes shifted briefly toward the reception desk.

That hesitation told Danielle more than any immediate answer could have.

“Thomas?””

He lowered his voice.

“There have been complaints.””

Victoria's face drained of color.

“Complaints about what?””

Thomas looked at her steadily.

“Your behavior, Mrs. Hale. This isn't the first time someone has reported being humiliated by you in this hotel.””

Danielle slowly turned back toward him.

“How many complaints?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Four formal complaints in the last six months.””

Victoria gripped her handbag.

“That is a lie!””

“No,” Thomas replied.

“And one of those complaints came from an employee you demanded be fired.””

Danielle looked at Victoria.

For the first time, she understood that the slap in the lobby might not be an isolated act of cruelty.

It might be the latest incident in a much longer pattern.

And as Thomas reached into his folder and pulled out a document, Danielle saw a name at the top of the page that made her stomach tighten.

May you like

It belonged to someone she knew.

Someone who had no reason to be involved in this at all.
