Chapter 5: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

At 6:30 p.m., Danielle stood in the hotel's executive conference room, watching the sun sink behind Atlanta's skyline.

Grace slept in her portable bassinet near the wall. A bottle warmer hummed quietly on the side table, and a folded blanket lay across the back of Danielle's chair.

She had spent the afternoon reviewing financial records.

The numbers were bad enough.

The pattern was worse.

Payments to Hale Strategic Events had increased shortly after Victoria began hosting charity functions at the hotel. Some invoices were legitimate, but others described vague services with no supporting documentation. Several had been approved within hours of employee complaints.

Every time someone objected to Victoria's behavior, money seemed to move.

Danielle had asked the independent auditors to preserve all records before anyone could alter them.

Now she was waiting for Thomas.

He entered carrying a small evidence envelope.

"I found something in the security archive," he said.

Danielle looked up.

"What?""

"The original footage from Evelyn Carter's complaint.""

"I thought the footage had been deleted.""

"That's what the archived incident report says. But our security supervisor discovered a backup on an older server.""

Thomas placed the envelope on the table.

"There's also an audio file.""

Danielle felt a cold sensation move through her chest.

"Play it.""

Thomas connected his laptop to the conference-room display.

The footage showed the Magnolia Ballroom seven weeks earlier. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath warm lights. Guests in formal clothes moved between tables while a string quartet played near the stage.

Evelyn Carter stood beside a table, wearing a navy dress and a pearl necklace.

Victoria approached her.

Even without sound, Danielle could see the contempt in Victoria's expression.

Then the audio began.

"That necklace is supposed to be real?"" Victoria asked.

Evelyn touched the pearls.

"It belonged to my husband.""

Victoria laughed.

"How sentimental. And how convenient.""

Evelyn's smile faded.

"I beg your pardon?""

"I said it looks cheap.""

A nearby guest turned toward them.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Mrs. Hale, I came here to support the children's literacy program. I don't wish to argue.""

"Then perhaps you should have dressed appropriately.""

"I was invited.""

"By whom?""

Evelyn named the charity's director.

Victoria gave an exaggerated sigh.

"People hand out invitations to anyone these days.""

Danielle's fingers curled around the edge of the table.

The footage continued.

Evelyn attempted to walk away, but Victoria stepped into her path.

"Before you leave, I think you should explain something to me.""

"What?""

"Did you purchase those pearls from a legitimate jeweler?""

Evelyn looked stunned.

"My husband gave them to me twenty-two years ago.""

"That wasn't my question.""

"I won't discuss my personal belongings with you.""

Victoria's expression sharpened.

"Security!""

Two guards approached.

"Please escort this woman out," Victoria said.

"I have reason to believe she's wearing counterfeit jewelry at a private event.""

One guard looked uncertain.

"Ma'am, she's on the guest list.""

"Then remove her from the guest list.""

Evelyn stood perfectly still.

"You cannot do this to me.""

Victoria leaned close enough that the microphone captured every word.

"Watch me.""

Danielle turned away from the screen.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Evelyn had been treated like a criminal over a necklace that held the last memories of her husband.

And Victoria had enjoyed every second.

"Stop the footage," Danielle said.

Thomas paused it.

"There's more.""

Danielle looked at him.

"What could possibly be worse?""

Thomas opened the audio file.

The video remained frozen on Victoria's face, but a new recording began. It appeared to have been captured later that evening in a service corridor.

Victoria's voice came through clearly.

"I don't care what the complaint says. Get rid of it.""

A man's voice answered.

"Mrs. Hale, we can't simply remove a formal complaint.""

"Then don't remove it. Lose it.""

"Mr. Bennett will notice.""

"Then make sure Mr. Bennett has something more important to worry about.""

A pause followed.

Then another voice spoke.

Michael.

"I can handle the paperwork.""

Danielle stopped breathing for a moment.

Victoria continued.

"And the payment?""

"Twenty-five thousand, as agreed," Michael replied.

"Make it look like an event expense. Richard will arrange the invoice through his company.""

Michael sounded irritated.

"I've already told finance what to do. But this needs to be the last one.""

Victoria laughed softly.

"Of course. Until the next one.""

The recording ended.

Danielle remained motionless.

Thomas closed the laptop.

"I should have brought this to you immediately," he said.

"I was told the complaint had been settled, and I accepted that explanation.""

"You heard your own employee being threatened, and you accepted an explanation from my brother?""

Thomas lowered his head.

"Yes.""

Danielle looked at him for a long moment.

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid of what would happen if the hotel's largest donors withdrew their support. And because I believed the complaint would eventually be addressed.""

"By whom? The same people who buried it?""

Thomas had no answer.

Danielle stood and walked to the window.

The city lights were beginning to flicker on, one by one.

She remembered the promise she had made when she took control of the hotel after their mother died. She had wanted a place where people could walk through the doors and feel respected, regardless of their bank accounts, accents, or clothes.

Somewhere along the way, she had trusted the wrong people to protect that promise.

"Send the recording to our independent counsel," she said.

"Preserve the original files. No edits, no copies stored on personal devices.""

Thomas nodded.

"And prepare a formal suspension notice for anyone who interfered with the complaints or falsified the financial records. No exceptions.""

"That includes Michael?""

Danielle closed her eyes briefly.

"Especially Michael, if the evidence supports it.""

Thomas left to make the arrangements.

Danielle returned to Grace, who had begun stirring in her bassinet.

She lifted her daughter carefully and settled her against her shoulder.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart," she whispered.

"I wanted your first weeks in this world to be peaceful.""

Grace yawned and curled her fingers around Danielle's collar.

Danielle kissed her forehead.

The child had no idea that the hotel around her was becoming the center of a financial investigation. She knew nothing about her uncle's signature, Victoria's cruelty, or the hundreds of thousands of dollars that might have been used to silence employees.

For a moment, Danielle allowed herself to focus only on the warmth of her daughter's cheek.

Then a knock sounded.

Marcus entered, holding a sealed envelope.

"Mrs. Brooks, this was delivered to the front desk. The courier insisted it be handed directly to you.""

Danielle shifted Grace into one arm and opened the envelope with the other.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

The message had been printed in black ink.

*STOP INVESTIGATING THE HALE PAYMENTS, OR YOUR HOTEL WILL BE THE LEAST OF YOUR PROBLEMS.*

Beneath the warning was a photograph.

Danielle stared at it.

It showed Grace's nursery at Danielle's home.

The curtains were drawn. A small lamp glowed beside the crib.

The photograph had been taken from inside the room.

Danielle felt every muscle in her body tighten.

"Marcus," she said, her voice suddenly quiet, "lock down the hotel entrances and call the police.""

He took one look at the photograph.

"Is your home secure?""

"I don't know.""

She immediately called her home security company.

No answer.

She tried again.

This time, someone picked up.

"Security services. How may I help you?""

"This is Danielle Brooks. I need an immediate status check on my residence. Every camera, every alarm, every entry point.""

There was a pause as the operator accessed her account.

Then his voice changed.

"Mrs. Brooks, I'm showing that your home security system was disabled remotely approximately forty minutes ago.""

Danielle tightened her hold on Grace.

"By whom?""

"I can't confirm that yet.""

"Can you tell me whether anyone entered the house?""

Another pause.

"Mrs. Brooks, our system recorded an interior motion alert in the nursery shortly before the cameras went offline.""

Danielle looked at the photograph again.

May you like

The nursery lamp was still glowing.

And someone had been close enough to photograph her daughter's crib.
