Chapter 8: The Bride Who Knew Too Much
Brianna had always believed that money could solve almost any problem.
If a dress didn't fit, she bought another.
If a friend offended her, she replaced the friend.
If Daniel was too busy with work, she booked a weekend at a luxury resort and expected him to rearrange his schedule.
But money had never taught her what to do when the person she trusted most began threatening her life.
At 1:18 a.m., she stood barefoot in the penthouse she had shared with Daniel, staring at a suitcase on the bed.
Her phone lay beside it.
Six missed calls from her mother.
Three from an unknown number.
And one message from Ethan Cole.
*Leave the city before sunrise. Do not contact Daniel. Do not speak to Richard.*
Brianna read it again.
Then she threw the phone against the wall.
“Damn you, Ethan!””
The screen shattered.
She paced across the living room, her reflection moving through the dark windows overlooking the city. Her engagement ring was gone. Daniel had canceled the wedding venue reservation, frozen the joint spending account, and instructed his assistant to arrange separate legal representation.
He had done all of that within two hours.
Brianna had never imagined he could move so quickly against her.
A knock sounded at the door.
She froze.
“Who is it?””
“It's me,” Daniel answered.
For one hopeful second, she thought he had come back to forgive her.
She rushed to the door and opened it.
Daniel stood in the hallway with two security officers behind him.
His expression was cold.
“I'm here for my documents and personal belongings.””
Brianna's face crumpled.
“Daniel, please. We need to talk.””
“We've talked enough.””
“You can't throw away everything we had because of a few photographs!””
He looked at her in disbelief.
“A few photographs? You were having an affair with a man who was secretly targeting my company.””
“I didn't know about that!””
“Then explain why you gave him confidential information about Carter Global.””
Brianna looked away.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“You did, didn't you?””
“I only told him things that weren't important.””
“What does that mean?””
“He asked about projects. He wanted to understand the market. I didn't think—”
“You gave a competitor information about my business because he was sleeping with you?””
Brianna's eyes filled with tears.
“I loved you, Daniel.””
“No. You loved the life you thought I could give you.””
The words struck her harder than a slap.
“You don't mean that.””
“I wish I didn't.””
He stepped inside, followed by the security officers, and walked toward his study.
Brianna hurried after him.
“Daniel, wait. There's something I haven't told you.””
He stopped.
“I'm listening.””
She swallowed.
“The baby.””
His face became unreadable.
“What about the baby?””
Brianna looked down at her stomach.
“I don't know who the father is.””
For several seconds, neither of them moved.
Daniel slowly turned around.
“You knew that when you told me you were pregnant?””
“I suspected it.””
“And you let me plan a wedding?””
“I thought the baby was yours.””
“You thought?””
Brianna began crying.
“Ethan told me he would take care of everything. He said that once we were married, it wouldn't matter.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Did he tell you to marry me because of my company?””
She said nothing.
“Brianna.””
“He said Carter Global had assets that would make the investment worthwhile.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“What investment?””
Brianna wiped her cheeks.
“I don't know all the details.””
“Tell me what you do know.””
She hesitated, then crossed the room and retrieved a small key from her handbag.
“Ethan gave me access to a storage locker. He said there were documents inside that I might need if anything went wrong.””
Daniel looked at the key.
“Where?””
“Northside Storage. Unit 614.””
“Why didn't you tell Richard?””
“Because the documents mention my mother.””
Daniel closed his eyes briefly.
“Of course they do.””
Brianna grabbed his sleeve.
“Please. I know I've done terrible things, but I don't want to go to prison. I don't want my baby to grow up without me.””
Daniel gently removed her hand.
“Then tell the truth.””
“What if Ethan comes after me?””
“Then you need to speak to the authorities before he can reach you.””
Brianna looked toward the broken phone.
“There's something else. Ethan told me that if I ever betrayed him, he would reveal what happened to Michael Williams.””
Daniel went still.
“You mean Amara's father?””
Brianna nodded.
“He said my mother knew the truth. He said she was there that night.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Was your mother involved in the accident?””
“I don't know!””
Her voice rose in desperation.
“I swear I don't know. But Ethan said the truck wasn't supposed to hit Amara's car. He said Michael was the target.””
Daniel took a slow breath.
The room suddenly seemed too quiet.
“Why would your mother want Michael dead?””
Brianna covered her face.
“Because he discovered the money.””
Daniel looked at the key in his hand.
“Then we're going to that storage locker.””
“Daniel, you said you were leaving.””
“I am. But I'm not leaving you alone with evidence that could put an innocent woman in danger.””
Brianna looked up.
“You still care about me?””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Don't mistake responsibility for love.””
He turned toward the door.
“Bring your coat.””
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at Northside Storage, a sprawling facility behind a chain-link fence. The night attendant unlocked the gate after Daniel showed his identification and explained that they were retrieving personal property.
Unit 614 stood at the end of a narrow corridor.
Brianna inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside, the storage unit contained several cardboard boxes, a metal filing cabinet, and a black suitcase.
Daniel opened the suitcase first.
Documents spilled across the concrete floor.
Corporate registrations.
Bank statements.
Copies of contracts.
And a photograph of Vanessa standing beside Ethan outside a private club.
Brianna picked it up.
“I've never seen this.””
Daniel examined the date printed on the back.
“Three years ago.””
The same year as Amara's accident.
He opened a folder marked *PROJECT NIGHTFALL*.
Inside was a series of emails between Ethan and an unnamed associate.
One message read:
The old man is becoming suspicious. Michael has copies of the records. We need to retrieve them before he goes to the board.
Another said:
The daughter must not inherit control. If the trust activates, the entire operation collapses.
Brianna felt sick.
“Daniel, look at this.””
She held up a page containing a handwritten list of names.
At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.
Beside it were the words:
*Vehicle coordination — approved.*
Daniel's face drained of color.
“Your mother signed this?””
Brianna shook her head violently.
“I don't know what it means!””
He continued reading.
The document appeared to describe a plan to intercept Michael's vehicle on the night he intended to deliver evidence to the board.
It didn't prove that the collision had been deliberately caused, but it placed Vanessa in the middle of a plan that involved Michael's movements.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“We need to photograph everything and call the police.””
“Wait!””
Brianna grabbed another envelope from the suitcase.
It contained a letter addressed to Ethan.
The handwriting was Vanessa's.
The girl survived. Richard is protecting her. We need another way to prevent the trust from taking effect.
Brianna stared at the words.
Her mother had known Amara survived the accident.
And instead of feeling relief, Vanessa had apparently worried about the trust.
A sound echoed behind them.
Footsteps.
Daniel turned toward the corridor.
A man in a dark jacket stood at the far end, watching them.
“Close the suitcase,” he ordered.
Daniel stepped in front of Brianna.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored the question.
“Mr. Cole wants the documents returned.””
Brianna backed toward the wall.
“Tell Ethan I'm not giving him anything.””
The man's expression remained blank.
“You don't understand. He isn't asking.””
Daniel took out his phone.
“I've already contacted the police.””
The man looked at the device, then turned and walked away.
Daniel immediately called emergency services.
When the officers arrived, they secured the storage unit and began documenting the evidence. Brianna sat on a plastic chair outside the facility, trembling beneath a borrowed coat.
Daniel stood several feet away, speaking to an investigator.
Then his phone rang.
Richard Williams.
Daniel answered.
“Mr. Williams?””
Richard's voice sounded strained.
“Have you found anything?””
Daniel looked toward Brianna.
“Yes. Documents connecting Vanessa to the investigation. And something suggesting she was involved in the events surrounding Michael's death.””
There was a long silence.
Then Richard said, “Bring everything to my house. We have another problem.””
“What happened?””
“Margaret is missing.””
Daniel straightened.
“Your secretary?””
“Yes. She left the estate before we could question her about the notebook. Her office has been searched, and several files are gone.””
Daniel looked at the evidence boxes.
“Do you know where she went?””
Richard's voice dropped.
“We just received a message from her phone.””
“What does it say?””
Richard paused.
Then he read the message aloud.
*If you want to know who ordered the accident, ask Amara why her father changed his will the day before he died.*
Daniel stared at Brianna.
She had heard every word.
Her lips parted.
“Oh, my God.””
“What?”” Daniel asked.
Brianna began to shake.
“My mother told me something once. She said Michael didn't die immediately after the crash.””
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“What do you mean?””
Brianna looked at him through frightened eyes.
May you like
“She said someone reached him before the ambulance arrived.””
And the person she named next was the last person either of them expected.
