Chapter 4: The Money Beneath the Family Name

“Her father's.””

The words seemed to hang in the ballroom long after Richard finished speaking.

Amara stared at the financial record in her grandfather's hands. Her father's name, Michael Williams, appeared beside a transaction dated two months before the accident that had changed her life.

“That can't be right,” she whispered.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“Are these records verified?””

Margaret adjusted her glasses and opened the folder she had carried throughout the evening.

“The account numbers match the records from the family foundation. The transfers were authorized through a company registered overseas. However, we haven't yet established who ultimately controlled that company.””

Vanessa gave a brittle laugh.

“There. You see? Nobody knows anything. You're all standing here accusing people based on paperwork that hasn't even been properly investigated.””

Richard didn't look at her.

“Margaret, call Thomas. Tell him to come here immediately.””

“Our attorney?””

“And the forensic accountant. I want the original records preserved before anyone has an opportunity to destroy them.””

Vanessa's expression changed at the word destroy.

It was a small change. A tightening around her mouth. A quick glance toward Brianna.

Amara noticed both.

So did Richard.

“Vanessa,” he said, “you appear unusually concerned about documents you claim have nothing to do with you.””

“I am concerned about your behavior!”” Vanessa snapped.

“You're frightening everyone, humiliating my daughter, and dragging the name of a dead man through the mud.””

Amara wheeled herself forward.

“Don't use my father to protect yourself.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me.””

Amara's voice shook, but she kept her eyes raised.

“My father died when I was twelve. You barely knew him. You don't get to use his name now simply because the truth has become inconvenient.””

A murmur passed through the guests.

Vanessa's cheeks reddened.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Finish that sentence,” Richard interrupted, “and you'll leave this house before the police arrive.””

Vanessa stopped.

For years, she had relied on the assumption that Richard would tolerate her behavior to preserve the family's reputation. Tonight, that assumption was beginning to collapse.

Daniel stood near the fireplace, turning the photographs over in his hands.

“Ethan Cole,” he muttered.

He pulled out his phone and opened a message thread.

Brianna immediately noticed.

“Daniel, what are you doing?””

“Checking something.””

“Put your phone away.””

He ignored her.

Amara watched him scroll through an email, then another. His expression grew darker.

“What is it?”” she asked.

Daniel hesitated before showing Richard the screen.

“Three months ago, Carter Global lost a development contract to a company I had never heard of before. The winning bid was submitted by a shell company.””

Richard studied the screen.

“Who owned it?””

“The ownership records were sealed. We tried to identify the investors, but the company was dissolved shortly after the contract was awarded.””

“And Ethan Cole was involved?””

“I suspected he was. I couldn't prove it.””

Daniel looked toward Brianna.

“Now I know why he was always asking you questions about my company.””

Brianna's face went rigid.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

“You knew which projects I was bidding on. You knew the dates of our board meetings. You knew which clients were considering leaving us.””

“I'm your fiancée. Of course I knew about your business.””

“You also knew my private schedule, including meetings I never discussed outside my office.””

She shook her head.

“You're twisting everything.””

Daniel turned to Richard.

“Could these transfers be connected to the shell company?””

“They could,” Richard replied.

“But we need evidence before we accuse anyone.””

Amara looked again at the record.

“Why would my father have authorized the first transfer?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Your father was investigating irregularities in the foundation shortly before he died. I believed he had discovered something significant, but he never explained the full extent of it to me.””

“Why not?””

“He said he needed to protect you first.””

Amara's breath caught.

“Protect me from what?””

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he asked Margaret to find the estate documents from Michael's death.

Margaret searched through the folder, turning pages rapidly.

“Mr. Williams, the original estate file is in the private archive. I can have it delivered tomorrow morning.””

“No.”” Richard's voice hardened.

“I want it tonight.””

“Sir, the archive is locked, and the custodian has already gone home.””

“Then call him.””

Margaret stepped aside to make the call.

Brianna suddenly laughed.

It was a strained, ugly sound.

“You're all behaving as if there's some enormous conspiracy. Maybe Michael made a bad investment. Maybe he moved money for reasons nobody understands. Why does everything have to be about Amara?””

Amara looked at her stepsister.

“Because you just admitted that your mother promised you my inheritance.””

“I said no such thing!””

“You said she told you everything would belong to you once I was out of the picture.””

Brianna's eyes flashed.

“I was angry! I didn't mean it literally!””

“Then what did you mean?””

Brianna opened her mouth.

Vanessa grabbed her elbow.

“Stop answering her questions.””

Richard's gaze sharpened.

“Why are you afraid of what your daughter might say?””

“I'm not afraid of anything.””

“Then let her speak.””

Vanessa pulled Brianna away from him.

“We're leaving.””

Two security guards positioned themselves near the ballroom doors.

Richard didn't raise his voice.

“No one is leaving with company records, confidential documents, or property belonging to the family.””

Vanessa stared at the guards.

“You cannot detain us!””

“No one has detained you. You're free to leave whenever you like. But anything taken from this house without authorization will be reported stolen.””

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Daniel placed the photographs on a nearby table.

“I'm leaving,” he said.

“But I'm not leaving this matter alone.””

Brianna rushed toward him.

“Daniel, please. We can talk privately.””

He looked at her engagement ring.

“Give it back.””

Her hand flew to her chest.

“What?””

“The ring. It's a family heirloom. My grandmother gave it to me before she died, and I gave it to you when I believed we were building a life together.””

“You can't take it back!””

“I can, and I am.””

Brianna's fingers trembled as she removed it. For one desperate moment, she seemed tempted to close her fist around the diamond.

Then she dropped it into his palm.

Daniel turned away.

Amara expected to feel satisfaction.

Instead, she felt exhausted.

She had wanted Brianna to stop humiliating her. She hadn't wanted to watch an entire family implode around a stack of photographs.

Richard came to her side.

“Are you all right?””

Amara stared at the closed doors through which Daniel had disappeared.

“No.””

He nodded, accepting the answer.

“I won't ask you to be.””

“Grandpa, if my father was investigating the foundation, why did you never tell me?””

“Because I thought the danger had passed.””

“And now?””

Richard looked toward Vanessa, who stood beside Brianna near the windows.

“Now I believe someone has been waiting for you to become strong enough to inherit what your father left you.””

Amara's stomach tightened.

“Why would anyone care about me?””

Richard placed his hand on her shoulder.

“Because your father's estate contains more than shares in a company.””

Before she could ask another question, Margaret returned, her face pale.

“Mr. Williams, the archive custodian has answered. He says the estate file was removed this afternoon.””

Richard went perfectly still.

“Removed by whom?””

Margaret looked down at her phone.

“The access log identifies the person who entered the archive.””

Amara watched her grandfather's face change.

Then Margaret whispered the name.

“Vanessa Williams.””

May you like

Across the ballroom, Vanessa slowly lowered her champagne glass.

And for the first time that night, she looked genuinely afraid.
