Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Photographs

“Daniel, darling, you have to believe me.””

Brianna's voice cracked as she reached for her fiancé's arm.

Daniel stepped away so sharply that her fingers closed around empty air.

“Don't touch me.””

“Please, just listen!””

“Listen to what?”” Daniel demanded, holding up the photographs.

“That the man kissing you in a hotel room is your cousin? Your personal trainer? Your long-lost brother?””

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Someone near the bar muttered, “This is unbelievable.””

Brianna shot the crowd a furious look.

“Everyone needs to stop staring! This is a private matter!””

Richard gave a humorless laugh.

“Then perhaps you should have kept your private matters out of other people's beds.””

Vanessa rushed forward.

“That's enough, Richard! You have absolutely no right to ambush my daughter like this.””

Richard turned his head toward her.

“Ambush? I merely presented a gift. Your daughter was the one who chose to open it in front of an audience.””

“You deliberately humiliated her!””

“Really?”” Richard tapped the photographs with the tip of his cane.

“And what would you call what she did to Amara five minutes ago?””

Vanessa's face flushed.

“That was a joke.””

“No,” Amara said.

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Every head turned toward her.

She took a breath and lifted her eyes.

“It wasn't a joke. A joke is when everyone gets to laugh, including the person you're talking about. Brianna wanted me to feel small. She wanted everyone here to see me as someone who deserved to be mocked.””

Brianna spun around.

“Oh, don't start acting like the victim!””

“I'm not acting.””

Amara's voice remained quiet, but something inside her had changed. The familiar urge to apologize, to smooth things over, to make herself less inconvenient had begun to fade.

“You called me useless because I use a wheelchair,” she continued.

“You mocked my life, my body, and my independence. And you did it because you thought nobody here would challenge you.””

Brianna's eyes narrowed.

“Grandpa is always on your side. You could set this entire house on fire, and he'd still hand you a bucket of water and tell you how brave you are.””

Richard's cane struck the floor again.

“Careful, Brianna.””

“Why? Because the truth hurts?””

“No,” Richard replied.

“Because you're confusing my patience with permission.””

Daniel barely seemed to hear them.

He was staring at the photographs.

“Where were these taken?”” he asked.

Brianna swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“You don't know?””

“I mean, I know the hotel, but—”

“Which hotel?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

Her mother stepped between them.

“Daniel, you're upset. Anyone would be. But you're a successful man, and you know how people operate.

Photographs can be manipulated. Faces can be altered. You should think carefully before making accusations.””

Daniel held one image closer to the light.

“Are you telling me this is fake?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I'm saying we don't know the whole story.””

Richard nodded to Margaret.

“Tell them.””

Margaret opened a slim folder she had been holding beneath her arm.

“The photographs were taken over six weeks,” she explained.

“The locations include the Westbridge Hotel, the Halston Private Club, and a residential property in Lake Forest. The original digital files were preserved with their metadata.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Six weeks?””

Brianna's lips parted.

Margaret continued.

“The man has been identified as Ethan Cole. He is thirty-four years old and owns Cole Development Partners.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Ethan Cole?””

This time, the name drew an audible reaction from several guests.

Ethan Cole wasn't an obscure stranger. His company had recently competed against Carter Global for a major commercial development contract.

Daniel had publicly described him as an ambitious rival who lacked the resources to compete with established firms.

Brianna seized on Daniel's expression.

“It's not what you think!””

“Then tell me what it is.””

“He's just someone I know!””

“How long have you known him?””

“I don't remember exactly.””

Daniel let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You remember the date of every dress you've bought this year, but you can't remember how long you've known a man you're kissing in hotel rooms?””

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please. I love you.””

He looked at her engagement ring.

“Did you sleep with him?””

Vanessa gasped.

“Daniel!””

“I'm asking my fiancée a question.””

Brianna began to cry.

“It's complicated.””

Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.

Then he opened them.

“That's not an answer.””

Brianna glanced at the crowd, searching for sympathy. She found a few uneasy faces, but nobody stepped forward to defend her.

Her humiliation was complete.

Or so Amara thought.

Then Brianna did something that changed the entire evening.

She pointed at Amara.

“This is her fault!””

Amara blinked.

“What?””

“She did this!”” Brianna shouted.

“She's been jealous of me for years. She probably hired someone to follow me, took those pictures, and convinced Grandpa to ruin my life!””

Vanessa immediately seized the opportunity.

“Of course! Richard, you've always favored Amara. You've given her everything while treating Brianna like an outsider. How do we know you didn't manufacture this entire scandal?””

Richard regarded them both with quiet disappointment.

“Because I have no need to manufacture anything. Reality has always been sufficient where the two of you are concerned.””

Brianna trembled with anger.

“You can't prove anything!””

Margaret opened the folder again.

“Actually, Miss Williams, we can.””

She removed a printed hotel invoice.

“Room 1408 at the Westbridge Hotel was booked using a credit card registered to you. The reservation was made under your full legal name.””

Brianna stared at the paper.

“That doesn't prove anything!””

“There's also a parking record, a restaurant receipt, and a signed guest registration form.””

“Stop!””

Margaret fell silent.

Daniel looked as though someone had struck him.

“You used the money I gave you for the nursery to pay for those hotel rooms?””

Brianna froze.

Amara noticed the slight movement of Daniel's fingers. He was gripping the photographs so tightly that the edges bent.

“Daniel,” Brianna whispered.

“You told me the nursery was almost finished. You told me you'd ordered the furniture.””

“I did!””

“Then where is it?””

Brianna couldn't answer.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

“Why are you showing me this tonight? Why not send it to me privately?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Because your fiancée chose tonight to publicly degrade my granddaughter. I decided it was time everyone saw the difference between a person who has suffered a misfortune and a person who deliberately creates misery for others.””

Daniel looked toward Amara.

For the first time all evening, he seemed to see her rather than the wheelchair.

“I'm sorry,” he said quietly.

Amara studied him.

“For what?””

“For not stopping her.””

She gave a small, weary smile.

“You had plenty of opportunities.””

His eyes dropped.

“You're right.””

The admission surprised her more than an excuse would have.

Brianna heard it too.

“Daniel, don't you dare apologize to her!”” she shrieked.

“She's been manipulating Grandpa since the day she came back from the hospital!””

Amara's expression went still.

“Came back from the hospital?””

Brianna's mouth snapped shut.

Richard slowly turned toward her.

“What exactly are you suggesting?””

Brianna looked away.

“Nothing.””

“No,” Amara said.

“You started something. Finish it.””

For a moment, the only sound was the soft hum of the ventilation system.

Then Brianna lifted her chin.

“Fine. You want the truth? Ask Grandpa why he was so desperate to bring you back into this family after your accident. Ask him why he suddenly started giving you opportunities while the rest of us had to work for everything.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Brianna, you have no idea what you're talking about.””

“Don't I?””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

“Brianna,” she whispered.

“Put that away.””

But Brianna was already unlocking the screen.

“You think you're the only one who can bring secrets to a party?”” she asked Richard.

“You think you're the only one who can destroy someone's reputation?””

She tapped the screen and held the phone toward Amara.

On it was a photograph of a document bearing Richard Williams's signature.

Amara leaned forward.

Her breath caught.

The document was dated three years earlier.

The date of her accident.

And beneath Richard's signature were words that made the ballroom tilt around her.

*Emergency Transfer of Controlling Interest.*

Amara stared at the page.

“Grandpa,” she whispered.

“What is that?””

Richard didn't answer immediately.

For the first time that night, the old man's composure faltered.

And Brianna smiled through her tears.

May you like

“Go ahead, Grandpa,” she said.

“Tell her why you really saved her.””
