Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't His
Marcus stared at the security monitor, his face drained of color.
“Show me the document,” he demanded.
Daniel adjusted his glasses and held a sheet of paper in front of the camera. Even through the screen, Marcus recognized the familiar shape of his signature: the tall first letter, the sharp downward stroke, and the long underline he had used since college.
But he hadn't signed it.
“That's a forgery,” Marcus said.
Vanessa stopped halfway down the staircase.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely afraid.
Daniel lowered the paper.
“I suspected that might be your response. The request was submitted to my office last Tuesday. It asked for a complete copy of Evelyn's estate plan, including the trust documents, property agreements, and beneficiary designations.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I didn't send that.””
“Did you authorize anyone to request those documents on your behalf?””
“No.””
Vanessa descended the remaining stairs, forcing a laugh.
“This is absurd. People are making mistakes, and we're treating them like crimes.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Did you request those documents?””
“Of course not!””
“Then why are you suddenly so interested in leaving the room?””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“Because your mother and her lawyer are trying to make me look guilty of something I didn't do.””
Evelyn stood near the hallway console, one hand resting on her walking stick.
“Vanessa, nobody forced you to lie about me. Nobody forced you to take money from my account.””
“You have no proof that I took anything!””
“The bank records say otherwise,” Daniel replied.
Vanessa pointed at the screen.
“Stop talking about bank records! You don't know what happens in this house.””
Daniel remained composed.
“Fortunately, financial transactions don't depend on what happens in this house. They leave records.””
Marcus almost laughed at the cold simplicity of the statement. Almost.
Then he remembered his mother's cheek.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Mom, I'm sorry.””
She studied him for a moment.
“For what, sweetheart?””
His throat tightened.
“For believing her without asking you what happened. For slapping you. For calling this my house as if you had no right to be here.””
Evelyn's lips trembled.
“You cannot take back what happened today, Marcus.””
“I know.””
“But you can decide what kind of man you want to be tomorrow.””
He lowered his head.
Vanessa watched the exchange with mounting frustration.
“Oh, please. Now we're having a beautiful little mother-and-son reunion? What about me? I'm standing right here, being accused of theft and forgery by a woman who has hated me since the day we married.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“I welcomed you into this family. I gave you my jewelry to wear on your wedding day. I even paid for the flowers when your father couldn't afford the arrangements you wanted.””
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
“That was your choice.””
“Yes,” Evelyn replied.
“And I made it gladly. I thought kindness would bring us closer. I was wrong about that.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Vanessa, I need an honest answer. Did you sign my name on that request?””
She folded her arms.
“No.””
“Did you access my mother's financial information?””
“No.””
“Did you move eighty-four thousand dollars into an account under your name?””
Her silence lasted a fraction too long.
Marcus noticed.
“Answer me.””
“I told you, I was borrowing it!””
“Without asking?””
“I knew you'd say no!””
The confession escaped like a broken glass slipping from her hand.
Marcus stared at her.
“So you knew I wouldn't approve.””
Vanessa immediately tried to recover.
“Because you never let me make decisions! Everything has to go through you or your precious mother!””
“This is my mother's money!””
“And this is our life!””
“Then why did you tell me you were trying to make her feel welcome?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I didn't want you to think I was a terrible person!””
Marcus looked away.
For the first time, her answer sounded more honest than any of her apologies.
Daniel interrupted.
“Mr. Carter, there's another detail about the forged request. It was accompanied by an authorization to release information to a third party.””
“Who?””
“A company called Northbridge Estate Acquisitions.””
Evelyn straightened.
Marcus frowned.
“What does an estate acquisition company want with my mother's documents?””
Daniel hesitated.
“That is precisely what I intend to find out.””
Vanessa's face had gone pale again.
Evelyn noticed.
“Have you heard of that company, Vanessa?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Daniel looked down at his file.
“Northbridge contacted my office earlier this week. They expressed interest in purchasing the property at its current market value, provided the ownership records could be clarified.””
Marcus's eyes widened.
“Someone is trying to buy our house?””
“They were trying to establish who had authority to negotiate a sale,” Daniel explained.
“I refused to provide any confidential information without proper authorization.””
Marcus turned to his mother.
“Mom, were you planning to sell the property?””
“No.””
“Then why would anyone approach an acquisition company?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“Perhaps we should ask the person who seems so familiar with these documents.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“I'm not answering any more questions.””
She turned toward the staircase.
“Where are you going?”” Marcus asked.
“To my room.””
“Your phone,” he said.
She stopped.
“What?””
“If someone forged my signature and accessed my mother's accounts, I want to know who you've been communicating with.””
Vanessa clutched the phone against her chest.
“You have no right to search my personal messages!””
“I haven't asked to search them. I've asked you to explain what is happening.””
“And I have nothing to explain!””
She stormed upstairs, her heels striking each step.
A moment later, a bedroom door slammed.
Marcus remained motionless.
Daniel's voice came through the speaker.
“Evelyn, I recommend that you secure your financial records tonight and avoid signing anything presented to you without my review.””
“I will.””
“And Marcus,” Daniel added, “do not confront anyone else until we establish who submitted those documents.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
“Because the request was not merely an inquiry. Someone attempted to obtain confidential information about an estate worth considerably more than the house itself.””
The call ended.
Marcus looked at his mother.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn glanced toward the staircase.
“It means your father left more behind than you ever knew.””
Before Marcus could respond, a sharp crash sounded from upstairs.
Then came Vanessa's voice.
“NO! YOU CAN'T TAKE THAT!””
Footsteps pounded across the second floor.
Marcus rushed toward the stairs.
“Vanessa?””
No answer.
He climbed quickly, with Evelyn following as fast as her aching knees allowed.
The master bedroom door stood open.
Drawers had been pulled from the dresser. Clothes covered the bed. A small leather box lay overturned on the carpet, its contents scattered.
Vanessa stood beside the wardrobe, clutching a thick envelope.
Marcus stared at the mess.
“What are you doing?””
Vanessa held the envelope behind her back.
“Nothing.””
“You've turned the room upside down!””
“I was looking for something.””
“What?””
She looked past him and saw Evelyn standing in the doorway.
For one terrible second, her composure vanished.
Then she lifted her chin.
“Ask your mother why she kept this hidden from you.””
Evelyn's face changed.
Marcus turned toward her.
“Mom, what is it?””
Vanessa brought the envelope forward and ripped it open.
Several pages slid onto the bed.
The top sheet bore Evelyn's name, followed by a formal heading.
*Carter Family Irrevocable Trust — Beneficiary Amendment.*
Marcus picked it up.
His eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
The amendment had been prepared six weeks earlier.
It named a new beneficiary.
Not Marcus.
Not Vanessa.
A name neither of them had expected to see.
And beside that name was a handwritten note in Evelyn's unmistakable script:
If my son ever discovers the truth, tell him why his father made this decision.
Marcus looked up, his hands trembling.
“Mom,” he whispered, “who is this person?””
Evelyn stared at the paper.
For the first time that evening, she looked frightened.
“Where did you find that envelope, Vanessa?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Exactly where you thought nobody would look.””
May you like
Then she leaned toward Marcus and whispered:
“Your mother has been keeping someone else's child a secret from you.””
