Chapter 3: The Money Behind the Tears
“That's impossible.””
Vanessa said it too quickly.
Daniel remained calm on the screen.
“The records are quite clear, Mrs. Carter. Three transfers were made over a period of four months. Each originated from Evelyn's personal investment account.””
Marcus turned toward his wife.
“Vanessa, what is he talking about?””
She shook her head so hard that her earrings swung.
“I have no idea. He's making a mistake.””
Daniel opened a document.
“The first transfer was for eighteen thousand dollars. The second was for twenty-six thousand. The third was for forty thousand.””
Evelyn closed her eyes briefly.
She had suspected something was wrong for weeks.
Her bank had notified her of unusual activity, but she had initially assumed there had been a clerical error. When the withdrawals continued, she contacted Daniel, her attorney, and asked him to investigate quietly.
She hadn't wanted to accuse Vanessa without proof.
Now the proof was standing in front of her, trembling beneath the expensive chandelier.
Marcus looked as though someone had struck him.
“Eighty-four thousand dollars?”” he asked.
Vanessa lifted both hands.
“Baby, listen to me. I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She glanced at the attorney on the screen.
“Not in front of him.””
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“I'm her attorney. These records concern her money.””
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
“Then this is a private family matter.””
“Unauthorized transfers are not made lawful simply because the people involved share a family,” Daniel replied.
Marcus took a step away from his wife.
“Did you take money from my mother?””
“I didn't take anything!””
“Then why is your name on the account?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“It's a joint account. You know that.””
Marcus frowned.
“No, I don't.””
“You signed the paperwork months ago!””
“What paperwork?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward the staircase.
Evelyn noticed.
So did Marcus.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “what paperwork are you talking about?””
She tried to touch his face.
“Baby, you're exhausted. Your mother is upset, and that lawyer is throwing accusations around. We should talk about this privately.””
Marcus stepped back.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“You know how expensive this house is. The bills, the staff, the repairs. Someone has to keep everything running.””
“My salary covers the bills.””
“Barely!””
The words burst out of her before she could stop them.
Marcus stared at her.
“Barely?””
Vanessa immediately changed her tone.
“I mean, we have a lifestyle to maintain. Your business has been unpredictable. I was trying to help.””
“By taking money from my mother?””
“I was borrowing it!””
Evelyn opened her eyes.
“Did you ask me?””
Vanessa turned on her.
“You have millions sitting in investments while we struggle to maintain this place!””
The instant she said it, the room went still.
Evelyn's face hardened.
“You knew the value of my investments?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Daniel looked down at his papers.
“That appears to be part of the problem.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“Vanessa, what did you do?””
She started crying again, but this time her tears seemed to anger him rather than soften him.
“I did what I had to do! You were never going to ask your mother for help, and she was never going to offer it unless someone forced the issue!””
Evelyn stared at her daughter-in-law.
“I gave Marcus money because I wanted to help him. You stole from me because you believed you deserved it. Those are not the same thing.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You think you're so innocent? You hold everything over our heads. You act like some saint because you gave your son money, but you never let him forget that you're the one who saved him!””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Mom, have I ever made you feel that way?””
Evelyn's expression softened.
“No, sweetheart. I never wanted you to feel indebted to me.””
“But you kept the agreement.””
“Because I trusted you. And I trusted that if things ever went wrong, we could resolve them honestly.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Honestly? You hired a lawyer behind our backs!””
“I hired an attorney to protect my savings.””
“From your own family!””
“From someone who was taking my money without permission.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
He had spent years believing that the biggest danger to his marriage was his mother's interference. Vanessa had told him that Evelyn was manipulative, old-fashioned, and incapable of accepting that he was an adult.
Whenever Evelyn complained, Vanessa called it jealousy.
Whenever Evelyn withdrew to her room, Vanessa called it emotional blackmail.
And Marcus had believed her.
Now he was beginning to wonder how many other things he had failed to see.
Daniel interrupted the silence.
“Evelyn, there's something else you should know.””
She turned toward the screen.
“What is it?””
“The account receiving the transfers wasn't opened solely for the purpose of receiving your funds. It was opened using documents that appear to have originated from your household files.””
Marcus stiffened.
“What documents?””
Daniel paused.
“Copies of Evelyn's identification, account statements, and a signature authorization form.””
Evelyn gripped her walking stick.
“I never signed an authorization form.””
“I understand. The signature appears to have been copied from another document. I've requested a formal review.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She had gone very pale.
“Did you forge my mother's signature?””
“No!””
Her denial echoed through the room.
Daniel continued, “I haven't reached a final legal conclusion. The records will need to be authenticated. But the signature discrepancy is serious.””
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
“Please, you have to believe me. I would never do something like that.””
Marcus's face was unreadable.
“Then you won't mind if the bank investigates.””
She stared at him.
“You would let strangers investigate your own wife?””
“You let strangers investigate my mother by accusing her of assaulting you. And you watched me slap her.””
The words seemed to strike Vanessa harder than a shout.
She looked toward Evelyn.
The old woman stood quietly beside the wall, her cheek still red.
For a moment, Vanessa seemed to understand what she had done.
Then her expression changed again.
“You're really going to choose her over me?””
Marcus swallowed.
“This isn't about choosing.””
“It always is!”” Vanessa cried.
“Every time she looks at me, you rush to defend her. Every time I complain, I'm the villain. You have no idea what it's like living with a woman who makes you feel like you can never measure up!””
Evelyn's voice was gentle.
“Vanessa, I never asked you to measure up to me. I only asked you to treat me with basic respect.””
Vanessa spun toward her.
“You ruined everything!””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“I simply stopped pretending that nothing was wrong.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Go upstairs.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“Go upstairs. I need to think.””
She stared at him as if he had spoken a foreign language.
“You're ordering me out of the room?””
“I'm asking you to leave me alone for a few minutes.””
“You can't do this to me, Marcus. I'm your wife.””
“And she's my mother.””
The words hung between them.
For the first time, Marcus had said them without looking away from Vanessa.
She snatched her phone from the console table.
“Fine. You want to humiliate me? I'll show you what happens when you turn against me.””
“Vanessa,” Marcus warned.
But she was already moving toward the staircase.
Halfway up, she stopped and looked back.
“You think your mother is telling you everything? Ask her why she suddenly installed all these security systems. Ask her why she's been meeting with lawyers. Ask her what she was planning to do with this house before today.””
Evelyn's face remained composed.
“I'm not hiding anything.””
“Really?”” Vanessa said.
“Then tell him about the letter.””
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“What letter?””
Vanessa smiled, though her eyes were wet and furious.
“The one she received last week. The one that could change who owns this entire property.””
Evelyn's fingers tightened around the walking stick.
Marcus noticed.
“Mom?””
She looked at her son, then toward the staircase where Vanessa stood waiting for her to answer.
Finally, Evelyn took a slow breath.
“There's something I should have told you a long time ago.””
Vanessa descended one step, her smile widening.
“Go on, Evelyn. Tell him.””
Evelyn looked directly at Marcus.
“The letter wasn't about changing who owns the house.””
She paused.
“It was about who would inherit it.””
Marcus went completely still.
“Who would inherit what?””
Evelyn's eyes glistened, but her voice was steady.
“Everything your father and I built.””
Then Daniel spoke through the security console.
“Evelyn, before you explain the inheritance, I need to tell you something urgent. The person who requested a copy of your estate documents last week wasn't Vanessa.””
Evelyn frowned.
“Who was it?””
Daniel glanced at the file in front of him.
“Your son.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“I never requested anything.””
Daniel fell silent.
Then he turned another page.
“I'm looking at the signed request right now, Mr. Carter. It carries your name, your address, and what appears to be your signature.””
Marcus's face drained of color.
May you like
Because if he hadn't signed that request, someone had done it for him.
And that meant Vanessa might not be the only person in the house hiding a secret.
