Chapter 2: The Recording She Forgot About
For three full seconds, Marcus said nothing.
He stared at his mother as if she had suddenly begun speaking another language.
“Your attorney?”” he finally asked.
“What attorney?””
Evelyn adjusted the cuff of her cardigan.
“The one who handles my affairs.””
Vanessa forced a laugh, but it came out thin and unsteady.
“That's ridiculous. Why would an elderly woman need a private security account and an attorney? Marcus, she's trying to scare us.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“No, Vanessa. I'm trying to protect myself.””
“From what?”” Vanessa snapped.
“Your own family?””
Evelyn looked at the handprint-shaped redness spreading across her cheek.
“You tell me.””
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“This is getting out of control. We are going to watch the footage, and then we'll settle this like a family.””
Vanessa immediately nodded.
“Of course, baby. That's all I want.””
But as Marcus walked toward the security console, she followed him a little too quickly.
“Wait,” she said.
“Maybe we shouldn't watch it right now. You're angry, and your mother is upset. We should all calm down first.””
Marcus stopped.
“Why? You just said the camera recorded everything.””
“I know, but—”
“Then let's see it.””
Vanessa's fingers tightened around his sleeve.
“Marcus, please. I don't want to relive something so horrible.””
He gently pulled away.
“Two minutes ago, you wanted everyone to see what happened. Now you don't?””
Her mouth opened, then closed.
Evelyn watched without saying a word.
For the first time in months, Vanessa was losing control of a conversation.
Marcus tapped the screen. The security system displayed four camera feeds: the front entrance, the kitchen, the driveway, and the hallway.
He selected the hallway recording.
The footage appeared.
At first, everything looked ordinary. Evelyn walked slowly down the corridor, leaning on her cane. Vanessa stood beside the staircase with her wineglass.
Then Vanessa stepped into Evelyn's path.
Marcus leaned closer to the screen.
The audio was clear enough to hear the faint rustle of clothing.
Vanessa's recorded voice filled the hallway.
“You know what your problem is? You're still here.””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“That's taken out of context,” she said quickly.
Marcus didn't answer.
On the screen, Evelyn moved toward the wall, trying to pass.
Vanessa blocked her again.
Then the recording captured the words that had preceded the fall.
“Your husband is dead. Your son has his own family now. Nobody needs you anymore.””
Marcus slowly turned his head.
“Vanessa?””
She shook her head.
“I was upset. I didn't mean it like that.””
The footage continued.
Vanessa moved closer to Evelyn and whispered something into her ear.
The microphone caught only part of it, but the words that followed were unmistakable.
“Marcus will always choose me. And when you're gone, everything in this house will finally belong to us.””
Marcus's lips parted.
“What did you mean by that?””
Vanessa looked horrified.
“I was talking about the future! I meant when she eventually moves somewhere else. You know how she makes everything difficult.””
Evelyn gave a quiet, bitter laugh.
“Is that what you meant when you told me you couldn't wait until I was gone?””
“Stop twisting my words!”” Vanessa shouted.
Marcus held up a hand.
“Enough. Let's finish watching.””
On the screen, Evelyn pushed Vanessa away.
Vanessa stumbled backward, but not because Evelyn had used much force. Her heels moved deliberately. She threw herself onto the floor, released the wineglass, and dragged her hands through her hair.
Then came the scream.
“HELP! SOMEBODY HELP! SHE'S HURTING ME!””
Marcus watched the scene unfold.
He saw Vanessa clutching her own hair.
He saw her look toward the living room before screaming again.
He saw the moment she noticed the camera.
And then he watched himself run into the hallway.
The footage captured every word, every accusation, and the slap.
When the recording ended, the room became painfully quiet.
Marcus stared at the blank screen.
Vanessa began crying again.
“Baby, you have to understand. Your mother provoked me. I was terrified. I didn't know what she might do.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“You lied to me.””
“I panicked!””
“You told me she attacked you.””
“She pushed me!””
“And you deliberately threw yourself on the floor?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I was trying to get away from her!””
“You pulled your own hair!””
“I don't remember doing that!””
The excuse sounded so absurd that even Vanessa seemed to hear it after she said it.
Evelyn picked up her fallen walking stick and rested both hands on its handle.
“Marcus, I don't want you to punish your wife on my behalf,” she said.
“But I will no longer accept being treated like a criminal in the home I helped you build.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Helped me build?””
Evelyn's expression changed.
She had said too much.
Vanessa noticed it immediately.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn remained silent.
Vanessa took a step forward.
“Marcus, what is she talking about?””
He looked between them.
“Mom?””
Evelyn sighed.
“When you bought this property, the bank required a larger down payment than you could afford. Your father had left me an investment account. I used some of it to help you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“How much?””
“That's not important right now.””
“How much, Mom?””
She looked at him for a long moment.
“Four hundred and twenty thousand dollars.””
The silence that followed was different from the one before.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
Vanessa's tears stopped.
“Four hundred and twenty thousand?”” she repeated.
Evelyn nodded.
“The renovations were expensive. Your business was struggling, and I didn't want you to lose the opportunity.””
Marcus sank onto the nearest chair.
He remembered the transfer. He remembered his mother saying she had helped with the down payment. He had never asked how much she had given him because he had been too relieved to question a gift that saved the purchase.
But he had never understood the full cost of that sacrifice.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” he whispered.
“Because you were my son. I didn't want you to feel you owed me anything.””
Vanessa stepped between them.
“This doesn't change what happened today.””
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“It doesn't.””
“Then why are you bringing up money?””
“Because you said this was your house, and I didn't belong here.””
Vanessa's face reddened.
“Well, it is Marcus's house!””
Evelyn tilted her head.
“Is it?””
Marcus stood.
“Mom, what are you saying?””
Before Evelyn could answer, the security speaker chimed again.
“Mrs. Carter, your attorney has joined the secure call.””
A small window appeared on the console.
An older man with silver hair and rectangular glasses looked out from the screen.
“Evelyn,” he said, “I've reviewed the footage. Are you safe?””
“I'm safe for the moment, Daniel.””
The attorney's eyes moved to the others.
“Is your son present?””
“Yes.””
“Then perhaps it's time he understood why you asked me to prepare those documents.””
Marcus stared at the screen.
“What documents?””
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
“Mr. Carter, your mother instructed me to review the property's purchase records, the investment transfers, and the agreement you signed three years ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“What agreement?””
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, don't listen to this. They're trying to confuse you.””
Daniel continued without acknowledging her.
“The agreement contains a provision concerning the property and your mother's financial contribution. If certain conditions are met, she has the right to demand repayment and initiate legal proceedings to protect her interests.””
Marcus looked stunned.
“Mom, why would you need something like that?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.
“Because your father taught me that love should never require someone to surrender every form of protection.””
Vanessa's fingers dug into Marcus's arm.
“Tell him to stop,” she hissed.
But Marcus wasn't looking at her.
He was looking at his mother, remembering every time he had dismissed her complaints, every time he had accepted Vanessa's version of events without asking questions.
Then Daniel said something that made Vanessa release Marcus's arm.
“There is another matter, Evelyn. The documents you asked me to examine include the financial records from the last six months.””
Evelyn's face grew serious.
“Yes.””
Daniel glanced down at a file.
“I found several transfers from your personal account that you did not authorize.””
Marcus looked up sharply.
“What transfers?””
Daniel lifted his eyes toward the camera.
“Mr. Carter, one of the transfers was made to an account registered in your wife's name.””
May you like
Vanessa stopped breathing.
And for the first time since she had entered the mansion, she had no lie ready.
