Chapter 9: The Truth My Family Buried

I almost dropped the phone.

For years, Marcus Vale had existed in my mind as a memory.

A photograph.

A name attached to my father’s company.

A man who stood beside my family after tragedy destroyed it.

But now his voice was coming through my phone.

Alive.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

“Why are you calling me?”” I asked.

There was a brief silence.

Then Marcus laughed softly.

“Because you finally found the pieces they hid from you.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You’re the reason my father died.””

Another pause.

Not shock.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Amusement.

“You really believe that?””

Victoria stepped closer.

Her face was filled with fear.

I put the phone on speaker.

Everyone needed to hear this.

Marcus continued.

“Your father was a good man, Adrian. Too good. He thought exposing the truth would save everyone.””

“Instead, he died.””

Marcus sighed.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

The room went silent.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Your father discovered that the company wasn’t being stolen by me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He discovered someone else had been moving money.””

Victoria looked confused.

Richard looked nervous.

I stared at the photograph on the table.

The woman standing beside my father.

The woman my mother trusted.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The person who raised you after your mother died.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Victoria.

She knew exactly who he meant.

“No,” I whispered.

Marcus continued.

“She knew everything.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman who had comforted me.

The woman who brought meals to our house.

The woman my father trusted.

“She was involved?””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Not just involved.””

The call crackled.

“She started it.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Elena stepped forward.

“Adrian, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus is a liar.””

Marcus heard her voice.

“Elena.””

Her face changed.

The way someone reacts when they hear the voice of someone who caused them pain.

“You should have stayed hidden,” Marcus said.

Elena stepped closer to the phone.

“You should have been arrested.””

A cold silence followed.

Then Marcus said:

“You still don’t understand.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

A thousand questions raced through my mind.

But one mattered most.

“Who was she?””

Victoria looked at me.

She knew I was asking about the woman in the photograph.

“My father’s sister.””

I felt numb.

“Your aunt?””

Victoria nodded.

“Rebecca.””

The name felt familiar.

Because I had heard it many times growing up.

Rebecca was the woman who helped my family after my mother died.

The woman everyone called family.

The woman who stood beside me at every important moment.

I walked to the cabinet and pulled out old photographs.

Birthday parties.

Family gatherings.

Holiday dinners.

Rebecca was always there.

Always smiling.

Always close.

But now every memory felt different.

Elena opened the notebook again.

“There’s something else.””

I turned.

She pointed to a page.

A date.

The same date my father died.

“What about it?””

She looked at me.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who disappeared that night.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Elena looked at Victoria.

“Your mother was with him.””

I stared.

“My mother?””

Victoria nodded slowly.

“She knew your father was in danger.””

“Then why did everyone say she died years later?””

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was finally becoming clear.

My family had not lost people one by one.

They had been hiding a much bigger story.

Then Elena pulled out one final document.

“This was found with your mother’s belongings.””

I unfolded it.

It was a letter.

Not from my mother.

From Rebecca.

The first line made my blood run cold.

I know what happened to Adrian’s parents.

I looked at Victoria.

Then Elena.

Then the letter.

And I realized the biggest secret had never been about Victoria.

It had been about the people who taught me what family meant.

I kept reading.

The final sentence was underlined.

If Adrian ever discovers the truth, stop him before he finds the second account.

I looked up.

“Second account?””

Elena nodded.

“The account that proves everything.””

Before anyone could speak, the lights in the house suddenly went out.

The room became dark.

Then the sound of breaking glass came from downstairs.

Victoria grabbed my arm.

“Someone is here.””

I looked toward the hallway.

A shadow moved.

May you like

Someone had entered my home.

And they weren’t here to talk.
