Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Locked Door
For seven years, everyone believed Elena had disappeared.
But the photograph on my phone proved one thing.
She was alive.
And somehow, Victoria had known more than she ever admitted.
I stared at the image again.
The woman standing outside that old brick building looked different from the person in the faded photograph Clara brought to my wedding.
Older.
Tired.
But the same eyes.
The same face.
The same woman who had been erased from everyone’s lives.
“Elena is alive,” I whispered.
Victoria sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
I looked at her.
“How did you want me to find out?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the moment something inside me broke.
Not because Elena was alive.
Not because Clara had appeared.
Not even because children had called my bride “Mom.””
It was because every answer I needed was always hidden behind another secret.
Richard stepped closer.
“Adrian, you need to understand something.””
I turned toward him.
“I’m done understanding things that everyone kept from me.””
He accepted that.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised me.
Richard looked at Victoria.
“She made mistakes.””
Victoria looked up sharply.
“Don’t.””
“No,” Richard said.
“It’s time.””
Victoria stood.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
Richard’s voice became quiet.
“I watched Elena lose everything because we were all too afraid to speak.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Victoria.
“What did you do?””
Tears formed in her eyes.
“I didn’t hurt her.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
She looked away.
“I helped my father cover something up.””
The confession hit harder than I expected.
I stepped back.
“What?””
Victoria wiped her face.
“When Elena found the financial records, she wanted to expose everything.””
“And your family stopped her?””
Victoria nodded slowly.
“My father threatened her.””
The anger inside me grew.
“Where were you?””
She looked down.
“I was twenty-four.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I was scared.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought if I stayed quiet, I could protect Elena.””
I shook my head.
“But she disappeared.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Richard opened the folder again.
“After Elena vanished, Victoria secretly searched for her.””
I looked at him.
“Secretly?””
“Yes.””
Victoria whispered:
“I found her once.””
The room froze.
“You found her?””
Victoria nodded.
“Six months after she disappeared.””
My voice became colder.
“And you never told anyone?””
“I tried.””
“To who?””
“My father found out.””
The silence afterward felt heavier than anything.
I walked toward the windows.
The wedding decorations reflected against the glass.
The flowers.
The candles.
The perfect day that had fallen apart.
“Where was she?””
Victoria hesitated.
Then she said:
“A private facility outside the city.””
I turned around.
“What kind of facility?””
Victoria looked at Richard.
Neither answered.
That was enough.
“You still don’t trust me with the truth.””
“No,” Victoria whispered.
“We don’t know who we can trust.””
Before I could respond, the wedding hall doors opened.
A security officer rushed inside.
“Mr. Sterling.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“There’s someone waiting outside.””
“Who?””
The officer glanced at Victoria.
“A woman.””
My heartbeat changed.
“Describe her.””
He hesitated.
“She said her name is Elena.””
Victoria immediately stood.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She grabbed my arm.
“Adrian, please.””
I pulled away.
“You don’t get to stop me anymore.””
I walked toward the door.
Richard followed.
Victoria stayed behind.
When I opened the door, a woman stood outside under the evening lights.
She looked exhausted.
But alive.
Her eyes met mine.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she looked past me.
Straight at Victoria.
And tears filled her eyes.
“After all these years…”
Her voice shook.
“You’re still hiding the truth.””
Victoria covered her mouth.
“Elena.””
The woman took one step forward.
Then she looked at me.
“I’m sorry you had to find out on your wedding day.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Her expression changed.
Because the answer was worse than I expected.
“Because Victoria wasn’t the one who made me disappear.””
I froze.
She looked directly at Richard.
“It was someone else.””
May you like
Richard’s face turned pale.
And for the first time, I realized Victoria might not have been the person I needed to fear.
