Chapter 4: The Secret Inside The Family Files
Richard walked into the wedding hall like he belonged there.
Like he had walked through those doors a hundred times before.
He wore an expensive suit, but his expression wasn’t one of celebration.
It was regret.
Victoria stepped in front of me.
“Richard, you shouldn’t be here.””
He stopped.
“Neither should Clara’s children have been forced to come here today.””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
Richard looked at her sadly.
“I understand more than anyone.””
I looked between them.
“Someone please explain why everyone knows my wife’s secrets except me.””
Nobody answered immediately.
That was when I realized something.
This wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This was a story they had all agreed to keep from me.
Richard placed the folder on a nearby table.
“I brought this because I knew eventually the truth would come out.””
Victoria moved toward it.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You’ve spent seven years saying that.””
I opened the folder before Victoria could stop me.
Inside were old records.
Photographs.
Letters.
And copies of documents with the same family crest engraved on the top.
I looked at Victoria.
“What is this?””
She looked away.
Richard answered.
“Your bride’s family owned a private foundation.””
I flipped through the pages.
“What does that have to do with Elena?””
Richard took a deep breath.
“Elena discovered that money was being moved through accounts that weren’t supposed to exist.””
Victoria immediately interrupted.
“That’s not true.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know it is.””
I looked at Victoria.
“Were you involved?””
Her eyes widened.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too defensively.
Richard stepped closer.
“Victoria was young. She didn’t understand everything.””
Victoria looked at him angrily.
“Don’t make me sound helpless.””
“Then stop acting like you had no choice.””
The tension between them filled the room.
I closed the folder.
“What happened to Elena?””
Richard’s expression changed.
“She disappeared after she confronted Victoria’s father.””
Victoria looked down.
“I tried to help her.””
“Then why did she vanish?””
Victoria didn’t respond.
Richard slowly reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.
“She left this behind.””
Victoria’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
That reaction told me everything.
“What is it?””
Richard looked at me.
“The last thing Elena ever sent.””
He handed it to me.
The envelope was old.
The paper was worn.
My hands felt heavy as I opened it.
Inside was a single letter.
I read the first few lines.
If something happens to me, do not trust anyone who says they were protecting me.
I stopped.
My eyes moved toward Victoria.
She looked like she was about to break.
The letter continued.
The person who knows the truth has been standing beside me the entire time.
I looked up.
Victoria whispered:
“Adrian…”
I kept reading.
The final sentence made my entire body go cold.
I left the children with the only person I believed could save them.
I lowered the letter.
“The children?””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Where is Elena?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
A picture of a woman.
A woman standing outside a building.
A woman who looked older.
But unmistakably alive.
My breath caught.
Because underneath the picture were four words:
*She never disappeared. She was hidden.*
I looked at Victoria.
She was already crying.
“Adrian…”
I turned the phone toward her.
Her face collapsed.
Because she recognized the woman immediately.
“Who is she?””
Victoria covered her mouth.
May you like
And after seven years of silence, she finally whispered the name I had been waiting for.
“Elena.””
