Chapter 6: The Meeting Nobody Was Supposed to See

My father's hand tightened around his phone.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Neither did Evelyn.

The silence felt heavier than anything Victoria had said in the lobby.

Finally, my father spoke.

"What private meeting?""

Evelyn exhaled.

"Richard, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

"Not over the phone.""

"You just told me that someone arranged for my daughter to be stopped at my hotel. I think you can begin explaining right now.""

I stared at the phone.

Grace slept peacefully against my chest, unaware that the woman who had helped schedule my father's life for fifteen years had just admitted to something that sounded like a deliberate attempt to manipulate mine.

Evelyn's voice trembled.

"Danielle wasn't supposed to be involved.""

My father closed his eyes.

"That isn't an explanation.""

"I was trying to prevent a situation from becoming much worse.""

"What situation?""

"The acquisition. The financial disclosures. Victoria's involvement with Victor. Everything.""

Andrew Hale stood abruptly.

"What do you mean, Victoria's involvement with Victor?""

Evelyn fell silent.

My father noticed.

"Andrew is here. You can speak openly.""

A long pause followed.

Then Evelyn said, "Victoria and Victor have been working together for months. They believed they could pressure you into approving the acquisition before the discrepancies were discovered.""

Andrew's face went pale.

"How?""

"They intended to present the transaction as an almost completed deal. They believed that once the public announcement was made, backing out would damage Brooks Hospitality's reputation and force Richard to negotiate.""

My father looked at Thomas.

"Do we have evidence of this?""

Thomas nodded.

"The documents in the folder suggest coordination, but we need to authenticate them.""

Evelyn continued.

"Victor was supposed to provide the final financial summaries. Victoria was supposed to secure the signatures from her side. They thought they could resolve the missing liabilities after the acquisition.""

Andrew shook his head.

"That's impossible. Our board never approved the final terms.""

"They knew that," Evelyn replied.

"They were counting on the pressure of the announcement to make everyone behave as though approval was inevitable.""

My father spoke slowly.

"And where does Danielle fit into this?""

Another silence.

Then Evelyn said, "You had scheduled a confidential meeting at the Sterling Crown this afternoon.""

My father looked confused.

"No. I had no meeting scheduled here.""

"You did. At least, that was what the calendar showed yesterday.""

Thomas immediately checked his phone.

"Mr. Brooks, I can confirm that a private conference room was reserved for three o'clock under your executive account. The reservation was canceled at eleven twenty this morning.""

"By whom?""

"The request came through Evelyn's assistant credentials.""

My father stared at the phone.

"Evelyn?""

"I didn't know the meeting had been canceled," she said quickly.

"I thought Victor had arranged it.""

"Why would Victor arrange a meeting under my name?""

"Because he wanted to bring you a revised proposal before the acquisition discussions continued.""

Andrew looked furious.

"Without informing me?""

"That was part of the problem," Evelyn said.

"Victoria and Victor were trying to separate the negotiations from the people who were supposed to oversee them.""

My father paced toward the window.

"And Danielle?""

Evelyn's voice became quieter.

"Someone told me you planned to meet her after her daughter's appointment.""

I frowned.

"Dad, you never planned to meet me here.""

"No," he said.

"I didn't.""

Evelyn continued.

"Victor believed Danielle might accidentally walk into the conference area or overhear the discussion. He knew she had no involvement in the company, but he was concerned that she might recognize some of the people involved.""

I felt a chill spread across my shoulders.

"Recognize them from where?""

Evelyn hesitated.

"From your wedding.""

I looked at my father.

My wedding.

I'd married Michael Turner three years earlier. The marriage had ended six months ago after I discovered that he had been lying about his finances and maintaining a relationship with another woman.

My father had disliked Michael from the beginning, but he'd never interfered. He'd wanted me to make my own decisions, even when those decisions hurt me.

At the wedding, Victor Lang had been there as one of my father's closest business associates.

And Victoria Hale had attended as Andrew's guest.

I remembered her now.

She had barely spoken to me that evening, but she'd looked at me with the same expression she'd worn in the hotel lobby.

Like I was an inconvenience.

"Why would Victor care if I recognized him?"" I asked.

Evelyn answered reluctantly.

"Because your former husband worked for a company connected to the acquisition.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"Michael?""

Andrew looked toward my father.

"Michael Turner?""

I nodded.

Evelyn continued.

"Michael worked for a financial consultancy that provided preliminary risk assessments to Hale Financial. Some of those assessments were used in the early stages of the acquisition.""

I felt sick.

"My ex-husband has nothing to do with me anymore.""

"I know," Evelyn said.

"But he had access to information about the transaction, and Victor believed you might have kept copies of documents from your marriage.""

"I don't have any documents.""

"Victor didn't know that.""

My father turned away from the window.

"Why didn't you tell me this when you learned about it?""

"Because I was trying to establish what was true before making an accusation.""

"By helping someone manipulate my daughter's movements?""

"I didn't know that was what I was doing.""

My father's expression hardened.

"You knew enough to conceal it.""

Evelyn began to cry.

"Richard, please. I have worked for you for fifteen years. I would never knowingly put Danielle in danger.""

I looked down at Grace.

I wanted to believe Evelyn had made a terrible mistake rather than deliberately helped someone target me.

But the facts were becoming difficult to ignore.

Someone had used my father's calendar. Someone had arranged a meeting I knew nothing about. Someone had requested information about my visit. And Victoria had appeared in the lobby, determined to make me leave.

"Did you know Victoria would hit me?"" I asked.

Evelyn's answer came immediately.

"No. Absolutely not.""

"Then why did you say she was supposed to stop me?""

"I was told she would create a distraction. I thought she would complain to management and ask security to redirect you if you wandered near the conference rooms.""

"A distraction?""

My voice shook.

"That's what you call it?""

"No, Danielle. I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like you knew someone was planning to interfere with me, and you decided not to tell me.""

Evelyn cried harder.

"I thought I could stop it before anything happened.""

My father spoke before I could.

"You had a responsibility to tell me.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of whom?""

Evelyn didn't answer.

My father looked at Thomas.

"Secure the records connected to the calendar changes, the room reservation, and the access request. Notify our legal counsel. Evelyn is not to access any company systems while this is being reviewed.""

"Understood.""

Evelyn gasped through the phone.

"Richard, please don't suspend me. I can help you understand what happened.""

"You will have an opportunity to provide a full statement through the proper process.""

"But—"

"The conversation is over for now.""

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

"Dad, what happens next?""

"We establish the facts. We protect you and Grace. And we find out who was responsible.""

Andrew looked at the floor.

"I need to speak with my legal team immediately. If Victoria and Victor coordinated an attempt to manipulate the acquisition, my company may have been exposed to serious financial and legal consequences.""

My father nodded.

"Then do that. But remember, Danielle's assault is not a bargaining chip in a business dispute.""

"I understand.""

Andrew picked up his briefcase.

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

"Danielle, I'm sorry. I know that doesn't undo anything, but I am sorry.""

I believed that he was sorry.

I wasn't ready to forgive his part in the situation, even if his part had been silence rather than the slap itself.

"Then help make sure nobody else gets treated that way," I said.

He nodded and left.

Thomas remained by the door.

"Mr. Brooks, there's another issue.""

My father looked exhausted.

"What now?""

"The canceled conference room reservation included an attendee list. Most names are familiar, but one is not.""

"Who?""

Thomas handed him a printed page.

My father scanned the list.

Then he stopped.

"What is it?"" I asked.

He looked up slowly.

"The meeting was scheduled to include Michael Turner.""

My stomach tightened.

"My ex-husband?""

"Yes.""

"Why would Michael attend a meeting about the acquisition?""

My father didn't answer immediately.

He read the page again, then turned it toward me.

Beside Michael's name was a handwritten note.

*Bring the original files. Do not tell Danielle.*

I stared at the words.

"I don't have any files," I whispered.

"I know," my father said.

"But someone thinks I do.""

Thomas nodded grimly.

"And we may have just discovered why.""

He showed us another message recovered from the canceled reservation's records. It had been sent from an account associated with Victor Lang to an address linked to Michael's former consultancy.

The message was short.

*If Brooks finds out what happened three years ago, the entire deal is finished. Keep Danielle away from the meeting at all costs.*

My father's face became unreadable.

I could barely breathe.

Three years ago.

My wedding.

My marriage.

The months when Michael had told me I was imagining things, that his secretive phone calls were work, that the money disappearing from our joint account was a temporary problem.

I'd believed him until the evidence became impossible to deny.

Now I wondered whether the lies I'd uncovered during my marriage had been only the surface of something much larger.

"Dad," I whispered, "what happened three years ago?""

He looked at me, and for the first time since he'd arrived at the hotel, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

"I don't know yet.""

Then Thomas's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and went completely still.

"Where is he now?"" he asked.

A pause.

"Don't approach him. Keep the location confidential and notify security.""

He ended the call.

My father stood.

"Who was that?""

Thomas looked at me before answering.

"Michael Turner has just entered the Sterling Crown.""

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Why?""

Thomas glanced at the recovered message.

"Because someone has told him that the original files are no longer where he left them.""

May you like

He paused.

"And he's asking to speak with Danielle.""
