Chapter 4: The Contract That Could Destroy Them
Andrew Hale stood beneath the Sterling Crown's crystal chandelier with his briefcase hanging at his side, looking like a man who had just discovered that the floor beneath him was made of glass.
Victoria rushed toward him.
"Andrew, thank God you're here. These people are blowing everything out of proportion. I had a disagreement with a woman who was behaving inappropriately, and now Richard Brooks is threatening our business.""
Andrew didn't look at her.
His eyes remained fixed on my father.
"What contract are you talking about?"" he asked.
Richard Brooks gestured toward the private lounge.
"We should discuss this somewhere quieter.""
"No," Andrew said.
"If this is connected to the acquisition, I'd rather discuss it here.""
My father studied him for a moment.
"Very well. Thomas, show him the document.""
Thomas opened his leather folder and removed several printed pages.
Andrew took them with trembling fingers.
Victoria stepped closer.
"Andrew, you don't need to read that. It's just paperwork.""
He turned toward her so sharply that she stopped speaking.
"Don't.""
One word.
I'd never heard a husband speak to his wife with that much fear and anger mixed together.
Andrew examined the first page, then the second. His jaw tightened as he reached the signature section.
"Victoria," he said quietly, "is this your signature?""
She glanced at the document.
"Yes, but—"
"Did you sign this on behalf of Hale Financial?""
"I had authorization to handle preliminary discussions.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
Her eyes darted toward my father.
"Andrew, please. Not here.""
He lifted the page.
"You certified that the company's board had approved the revised acquisition terms. You certified that all outstanding liabilities had been disclosed. You signed a statement confirming that no material conflicts of interest existed.""
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Those were standard representations.""
"Did the board approve them?""
She didn't answer.
Andrew looked at my father.
"Richard, I need to know exactly what your legal team has discovered.""
My father remained calm.
"Yesterday, our attorneys identified inconsistencies in the financial disclosures your company submitted during negotiations. Several liabilities were missing. We requested clarification before proceeding.""
Andrew's face tightened.
"I wasn't aware of any undisclosed liabilities.""
"That may be true. But someone signed a document claiming those liabilities did not exist.""
Victoria's voice rose.
"You're making me sound like a criminal!""
Andrew turned toward her.
"Then explain the missing disclosures.""
She looked around the lobby, suddenly aware that several employees and guests were still within earshot.
"This isn't the place.""
"You didn't seem concerned about the place when you were threatening Danielle.""
Her mouth fell open.
I stood near the entrance to the lounge, holding Grace against my chest. My cheek still hurt, and the day's events felt increasingly unreal.
An hour earlier, I'd been a tired mother looking for a chair.
Now two powerful men were discussing a multimillion-dollar acquisition while Victoria's carefully constructed world began to crumble.
But I wasn't interested in the money.
I wanted to know why someone could hit me in public and expect everyone else to protect her.
"Dad," I said softly, "does the contract have anything to do with what happened to me?""
My father immediately turned toward me.
"No, sweetheart. The contract is a separate business matter.""
"Then why does everyone keep bringing it up?""
Andrew answered before my father could.
"Because my wife has been using our business relationship with Mr. Brooks to convince people she can do whatever she wants.""
Victoria spun toward him.
"Andrew!""
He ignored her.
"I should have stopped it sooner.""
There was something painful in his voice, something that made me suspect this wasn't the first time Victoria had used her position to intimidate someone.
My father folded his arms.
"That is something you will need to address within your family and your company. The hotel's investigation will remain separate.""
Andrew nodded.
"Agreed.""
Victoria stared at him as if he had betrayed her.
"You're taking their side?""
Andrew looked at the red mark on my cheek.
"I'm taking the side of what happened.""
She let out a bitter laugh.
"Unbelievable. You're willing to sacrifice everything we've built because some woman claims I slapped her?""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Some woman has a name," I said.
Victoria looked at me.
I held her gaze.
"Danielle Brooks. And my daughter was in my arms when you hit me.""
For a moment, the lobby fell silent.
Then Andrew looked at her.
"Did you hit her?""
Victoria's expression hardened.
"She was provoking me.""
"Did you hit her?""
"I told you, I reacted badly!""
Andrew closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, his face had changed.
"That's enough.""
He handed the contract back to Thomas.
"Richard, I apologize. The acquisition should remain suspended until our independent counsel reviews the disclosures.""
My father nodded.
"That is the appropriate decision.""
Victoria looked horrified.
"You cannot do this! We have spent eighteen months negotiating this deal!""
"Then you should have protected the integrity of the negotiations.""
"You promised me this acquisition would make us one of the most powerful financial groups in the country!""
Andrew's voice became colder.
"I promised we would pursue a legitimate transaction. I never promised to ignore fraud.""
The word hung in the air.
Fraud.
Victoria looked around as if someone might rescue her from it.
Nobody moved.
Marcus Reed approached cautiously.
"Mr. Brooks, Mr. Hale, perhaps we could move this discussion to my office.""
My father turned toward him.
"Mr. Reed, your involvement in the incident is being reviewed. Until that review is complete, please refrain from handling evidence or contacting anyone who may be a witness.""
Marcus stopped walking.
"I would never interfere with an investigation.""
"I hope that's true.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"We've already secured copies of the available surveillance recordings under the hotel's retention procedures. The original footage will remain preserved.""
Victoria's eyes widened.
"Copies? You had no right to do that without asking me!""
Thomas looked at her.
"Mrs. Hale, the cameras belong to the hotel. The footage documents events on hotel property. You do not control it.""
Her fingers tightened around her handbag.
My father looked at Andrew.
"Your wife is free to seek legal advice. I suggest she do so before making any further statements.""
Andrew nodded grimly.
"I'll arrange it.""
Victoria turned on him.
"You can't abandon me!""
He looked exhausted.
"I'm not abandoning you. I'm refusing to lie for you.""
She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a furious whisper.
"If this deal collapses, the banks will start asking questions. They'll examine everything. Everything, Andrew!""
He stared at her.
"Then perhaps we should have told them the truth before they had to ask.""
She slapped the contract out of his hand.
The pages scattered across the marble floor.
A receptionist gasped.
Andrew didn't bend to retrieve them.
Instead, he looked at my father and said, "There is one more thing you should know. Victoria has been telling people that your company had already approved the acquisition.""
My father's expression turned serious.
"Who has she told?""
"Several investors. A group of lenders. Possibly members of our own board.""
Victoria went white.
"Andrew, stop talking.""
He continued.
"If they've made financial decisions based on that claim, the consequences could extend beyond our companies.""
My father exchanged a glance with Thomas.
"Then our legal teams will need to determine the extent of those statements.""
I watched Victoria's face change from anger to panic.
For the first time, I understood that she hadn't merely been acting like a woman who believed she was better than everyone else.
She had been behaving like someone who thought consequences were for other people.
And now consequences were standing in front of her.
My father touched my arm.
"Danielle, let's get you and Grace somewhere comfortable.""
I nodded.
As we turned toward the lounge, Victoria called after me.
"You think you've won?""
I stopped.
My father didn't.
I looked back at her.
"No. I think you've finally been asked to answer for what you did.""
She took a step toward me.
"You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.""
Before I could reply, Andrew's phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, answered, and listened for several seconds.
Then his expression collapsed.
"Richard," he said, his voice barely audible, "we have a much bigger problem.""
He turned the phone toward my father.
On the screen was an email from Hale Financial's chief compliance officer.
The subject line read:
*URGENT: Possible unauthorized financial representations and missing disclosures.*
And beneath it was a second name.
Victoria's.
But it wasn't the only one.
My father's eyes moved to the next line.
The name beside hers belonged to someone he trusted.
May you like
Someone who had been working inside Brooks Hospitality for nearly twenty years.
Someone who might have known exactly what Victoria was doing all along.
