Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The first man through the hotel doors wore a charcoal suit and an expression that made people instinctively move out of his way.

A second man followed, carrying a slim leather folder.

Neither looked like a bodyguard hired for an ordinary family dispute.

They walked directly toward me.

Marcus lowered his radio.

"Can I help you gentlemen?""

The taller man didn't answer immediately. His eyes moved to Grace, then to the red mark spreading across my cheek.

His expression hardened.

"Miss Brooks?""

I nodded.

"I'm Danielle.""

"My name is Thomas Avery. Your father sent us.""

The moment he said my father's name, my eyes filled with tears I had been fighting for the last ten minutes.

"Is he coming?""

"He's on his way. He asked us to make sure you and your daughter are safe.""

Thomas turned toward Marcus.

"Who is responsible for security in this lobby?""

Marcus straightened his jacket.

"I am the hotel manager. May I ask who you are?""

Thomas produced a business card.

"Thomas Avery, executive director of corporate operations for Brooks Hospitality Group.""

Marcus looked down at the card.

For the first time since Victoria had struck me, the manager seemed uncertain.

Victoria, however, wasn't impressed.

She stepped forward, the diamonds around her neck flashing beneath the chandelier.

"This is a private matter. I don't know who invited you, but I'm a personal friend of the hotel's ownership.""

Thomas turned to her.

"Then you should have no difficulty explaining why you struck a woman holding a newborn.""

Victoria's mouth opened.

Then closed.

"Excuse me?""

"You heard me.""

She gave Marcus an incredulous look.

"Are you going to allow this man to speak to me like that?""

Marcus glanced at Thomas's card again.

"Mr. Avery, I'm sure we can resolve this professionally.""

"Excellent. Then preserve the security footage from the last thirty minutes, including every camera covering this lobby.""

Marcus hesitated.

"That footage is confidential.""

"Correct. Which is why I'm instructing you not to delete, overwrite, or alter it.""

Victoria gave a short, sharp laugh.

"You're instructing him? Who exactly do you think you are?""

Thomas didn't raise his voice.

"Someone who knows that security footage has a habit of becoming very important when people start lying.""

A few guests exchanged glances.

The businessman who had watched the slap pulled his phone out again.

Victoria noticed.

"You," she snapped.

"Put that away.""

He stared at her.

"I'm not doing anything.""

"Then stop pointing it at me.""

"I'm not pointing it at you.""

Thomas turned toward him.

"Sir, if you witnessed the incident, we'd appreciate your contact information. You don't need to share anything publicly.""

The man nodded.

"My name is Daniel Foster. I saw the whole thing.""

Victoria's face reddened.

"You saw nothing.""

"I saw you slap her," Daniel replied.

"She was holding her baby. I was standing ten feet away.""

For the first time, Victoria seemed to realize that the room was no longer entirely on her side.

She recovered quickly.

"This is absurd. I barely touched her.""

I stared at her.

My cheek still burned.

"You hit me hard enough to make me stumble.""

"You're exaggerating.""

"Then let's watch the cameras.""

Victoria turned toward Marcus.

"Tell them who I am.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Mrs. Hale is an important client.""

"Important?"" Thomas asked.

"Is that the standard you use when deciding whose complaints deserve attention?""

Marcus's ears turned red.

"I was attempting to keep the situation under control.""

"By ejecting the person who was assaulted?""

"I had conflicting accounts.""

Daniel Foster spoke up again.

"There weren't conflicting accounts. I watched her hit Danielle.""

Marcus looked at him, then at the growing circle of guests.

"Sir, I appreciate your statement, but this is an internal matter.""

"No," I said quietly.

"It became my matter when your manager decided I deserved to be thrown out for being hit.""

My voice was steadier now.

Grace had stopped screaming, though she still hiccupped against my chest. I kissed her forehead and checked her little face again.

Thomas noticed.

"Would you like a private room to settle the baby, Miss Brooks?""

I hesitated.

"Only if it's all right.""

His expression softened.

"Of course it's all right.""

He turned toward Marcus.

"Please arrange a quiet suite immediately.""

Marcus looked as if he wanted to object, but the business card was still in his hand.

"Certainly.""

Victoria let out an exaggerated sigh.

"Unbelievable. Now she's getting a suite?""

Thomas looked at her.

"No. She's receiving the privacy and care she should have been offered from the beginning.""

Victoria stepped closer to him.

"Listen carefully. My husband sits on the board of Hale Financial. We have done business with this hotel for years. If you embarrass me, you will regret it.""

Thomas's expression barely changed.

"Thank you for identifying yourself.""

"Excuse me?""

"I said thank you. It will make the incident report more accurate.""

For a moment, I almost smiled.

Then my phone rang.

The screen displayed the name Dad again.

I answered immediately.

"Dad?""

"Danielle, I'm outside. Thomas tells me you're safe, but I want to hear it from you.""

"I'm safe. Grace is okay.""

"Good. I'm coming in.""

I looked toward the glass doors.

"There's something else you should know.""

"What is it?""

I glanced at Victoria, who was now whispering furiously to Marcus.

"The woman who hit me keeps threatening me. She says she's friends with the owner.""

A pause.

Then my father asked a question that made my stomach flutter.

"Has anyone told you who owns that hotel?""

I frowned.

"What?""

"The Sterling Crown. Has anyone explained who owns it?""

"No. Why?""

My father exhaled slowly.

"Because, sweetheart, I own it.""

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything except the soft rustle of Grace's blanket.

I knew my father was wealthy. I knew he owned businesses, hotels, and office buildings across the country. But he had never discussed his investments in detail with me. After my mother's death, he had worked constantly, and I had built my adult life around the belief that his money was his business and my life was mine.

I had never asked which properties belonged to him.

I certainly hadn't known about this one.

"You own the Sterling Crown?""

"Through Brooks Hospitality Holdings, yes.""

I looked at Thomas.

He gave me a small, reassuring nod.

My father continued.

"Danielle, I don't care who that woman is or how much money she has. Nobody gets to hurt you and your child in a hotel I own, then use my staff to silence you.""

I swallowed hard.

"What do you want me to do?""

"Nothing you don't want to do. Stay with Thomas. I'll be there in two minutes.""

The call ended.

I lowered my phone.

Victoria had stopped whispering.

She was watching me now.

"Who was that?"" she demanded.

I didn't answer.

She laughed nervously.

"Let me guess. Some man who promised to come rescue you?""

Marcus approached me again, though his confidence had visibly weakened.

"Miss Brooks, perhaps we should all take a moment to calm down.""

Thomas stepped between us.

"She is calm. Your concern should be the fact that your employee response to an assault was to threaten the victim with removal.""

Marcus looked toward the entrance.

Then he saw the second black SUV pull up behind the first.

The rear door opened.

A man in a dark overcoat stepped onto the pavement, followed by two members of his executive security team.

I recognized the way he walked before I could see his face clearly.

My father.

Richard Brooks had never needed to raise his voice to command a room. He was a broad-shouldered man in his late fifties, with silver at his temples and the kind of quiet presence that made people stop talking when he entered.

But I had never seen him look the way he looked that afternoon.

His eyes found me first.

Then Grace.

Then the mark on my cheek.

Something in his expression went completely still.

He crossed the lobby in long strides.

"Danielle.""

I stepped toward him, careful not to jostle the baby.

"Dad.""

He wrapped one arm around my shoulders and kissed the top of my head.

"Let me see you.""

"I'm okay.""

He looked at my cheek.

"No, sweetheart. You're hurt.""

His voice was gentle with me, but when he turned toward the manager, the temperature in the room seemed to drop.

"Mr. Reed?""

Marcus went pale.

"Mr. Brooks. I wasn't expecting—"

"Clearly.""

My father looked around the lobby.

"Which one of you is Victoria Hale?""

Victoria took a step forward, forcing a smile onto her face.

"That would be me. Mr. Brooks, I'm sure we can clear up this unfortunate misunderstanding.""

My father looked at her diamonds, her dress, and finally her face.

Then he asked Thomas for the incident report.

Thomas opened his folder.

"We have a witness, the victim's account, and a request to preserve all security footage. There may be additional witnesses.""

My father nodded.

"Good.""

Victoria gave a brittle laugh.

"Surely we don't need to make this into a corporate spectacle. Danielle and I had a disagreement.""

My father looked at me.

"Did you disagree with her?""

"No, Dad. She told me I didn't belong here, then slapped me.""

He turned back to Victoria.

"Is that true?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"She was behaving inappropriately, and I reacted badly. But I hardly think—"

"You haven't answered my question.""

Her smile disappeared.

Marcus tried to intervene.

"Mr. Brooks, I was handling the matter according to the information available at the time.""

My father faced him.

"And what information did you have?""

"Mrs. Hale reported a disturbance.""

"Did you ask my daughter what happened?""

Marcus hesitated.

"I—"

"Did you review the cameras?""

"No.""

"Did you ask a single witness?""

Marcus's mouth tightened.

"No, sir.""

My father nodded once, as if Marcus had just confirmed something he had already suspected.

Then he looked at Victoria.

"You assaulted a woman holding her newborn child, and my manager tried to remove her instead of investigating.""

Victoria's eyes widened at the word my.

My father continued.

"And now I would like to know why you believed your money gave you the right to do that.""

For the first time, Victoria Hale looked genuinely afraid.

But the biggest shock of the afternoon was still waiting.

Because when Thomas handed my father the preliminary guest and incident records, my father scanned one page, stopped at a name, and looked up at Victoria with an expression I had never seen before.

"Interesting," he said quietly.

Victoria swallowed.

"What?""

My father tapped the page.

"Your company has been negotiating a major acquisition with us.""

May you like

He paused.

"And now I understand why your husband has been so eager to get me on the phone.""
