Chapter 9: The Envelope Beneath the Door

Daniel stared at the envelope for nearly a minute before opening it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Inside lay a single sheet of paper and a photograph.

The photograph showed his late wife sitting at a desk, holding a pen. She looked tired but peaceful, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders.

Daniel recognized the room immediately.

It was their old bedroom, the one they had shared before her illness forced them to move the bed downstairs.

He turned the photograph over.

Someone had written a date on the back.

The date was three weeks before his wife died.

Daniel unfolded the paper.

You think Emily's mother wanted you to move on because she knew you would eventually replace her.

Ask Emily what she remembers about the last night her mother was alive.

Then ask yourself why she never told you the whole truth.

Daniel read the message twice.

His hands began to tremble.

For a few seconds, he couldn't hear anything beyond the blood pounding in his ears.

He remembered that final night vividly.

Emily had been eleven. His wife had been too weak to sit up, and the doctors had warned him that her condition was deteriorating quickly.

He had spent the evening beside her bed, holding her hand.

Emily had entered the room just before midnight.

Her mother had asked to speak with her alone.

Daniel had stepped into the hallway.

When Emily emerged several minutes later, she had been crying so hard that he could barely understand her.

He had held her until she fell asleep.

They had never discussed exactly what her mother had said.

He had assumed Emily wanted to keep the memory private.

Now someone was suggesting there had been a secret.

Daniel immediately took the envelope and photograph to Emily's bedroom.

She was sitting on the floor, sorting old school photographs into a cardboard box.

“Sweetheart, can I ask you something?””

Emily looked up.

“Of course.””

He held out the photograph.

Her face changed instantly.

“Where did you get that?””

“It was left beneath my office door.””

Emily stood.

“Who left it?””

“I don't know.””

She took the photograph with trembling fingers.

For several seconds, she stared at her mother's face.

Then she began to cry.

Daniel placed the envelope on the desk.

“Emily, what happened the last night Mom was alive?””

She looked at him in alarm.

“What?””

“Someone left a message suggesting there's something you haven't told me.””

Emily stared at the photograph.

Her breathing became shallow.

“Dad, I didn't lie to you.””

“I didn't say you did.””

“I never lied about Mom.””

Daniel took her hands.

“Then help me understand why someone would write this.””

Emily closed her eyes.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “Mom made me promise something.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“What did she ask you to promise?””

Emily looked at the floor.

“She asked me to promise that I would let you be happy again.””

Daniel blinked.

“What?””

“She said that after she was gone, you might feel guilty about loving someone else. She didn't want me to think that another woman could ever replace her.””

Emily wiped her cheeks.

“She told me that love wasn't a competition. She said I could love her and still be happy with you if you ever married again.””

Daniel felt tears gather in his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me this?””

“Because I thought it was just between us. I thought you already knew.””

He pulled her into his arms.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Emily clung to him.

“I didn't keep it from you because I wanted to control who you loved. I kept it because I thought it was something Mom wanted me to carry.””

Daniel held her tightly.

“Your mother never wanted you to carry that alone.””

They stayed together for several minutes.

Then Emily pulled back.

“Dad, why would someone use that against me?””

Daniel glanced toward the door.

“I don't know yet.””

But he had a suspicion.

And he was determined to establish the truth before anyone could hurt Emily again.

Downstairs, Linda was on the phone when Daniel entered the kitchen.

She immediately ended the call.

“What was that?”” he asked.

“Nothing.””

He placed the anonymous envelope on the counter.

“Have you seen this before?””

Linda glanced at the handwriting.

Her face drained of color.

Daniel noticed.

“Linda?””

She looked away.

“I don't know what it is.””

“You recognized the handwriting.””

“No, I didn't.””

He took a breath.

“Someone left this outside my office. They are trying to make Emily believe she did something wrong by keeping a private conversation with her dying mother.””

Linda's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please. Don't do this.””

“Don't do what?””

“Turn every little thing into another accusation.””

He studied her.

“I'm asking you a question. Have you seen this envelope before?””

Linda shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel didn't believe her.

But he couldn't prove she was lying.

He placed the envelope in a folder with the other evidence.

“Then I hope you'll help me find out who left it.””

Linda stared at him.

“What happens if it's Vanessa?””

Daniel's answer came without hesitation.

“Then Vanessa will have to explain why she is continuing to target Emily after being told to stop.””

Linda sank into a chair.

“She doesn't know how to handle feeling unwanted.””

“Then she needs help learning. She doesn't need permission to hurt someone.””

Linda covered her face with her hands.

“I never wanted this.””

Daniel's expression softened slightly.

“Then help me stop it.””

For a moment, Linda seemed ready to agree.

Then her phone vibrated.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed again.

She stood abruptly.

“I need to go upstairs.””

Daniel watched her leave.

A minute later, he heard her bedroom door close.

That evening, Daniel received a message from Chloe's mother.

She had heard about the school investigation and wanted to share something her daughter had disclosed.

Daniel called her immediately.

“Thank you for reaching out,” he said.

“What did Chloe tell you?””

“She said Vanessa asked her to help make Emily look bad. Apparently, Vanessa claimed Emily had been spreading rumors about her.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Did Chloe say why Vanessa wanted her help?””

“She said Vanessa told her that if Emily lost her father's trust, things would finally be fair.””

Daniel felt anger rise in his chest.

“Did Chloe save the messages?””

“Yes. She has them on her phone.””

“Would she be willing to share them with the school?””

“I believe so.””

Daniel thanked her and ended the call.

He sat at the kitchen table, staring at the dark window.

He could now see the shape of the plan.

Vanessa had damaged Emily's dress to hurt her. When Daniel intervened, Vanessa had shifted to attacking Emily's reputation. When the screenshots began to unravel, she had turned to Emily's most private memories.

Each time one lie failed, another appeared.

And Linda had repeatedly defended her daughter, even when the evidence demanded questions.

Daniel didn't know whether Linda had helped Vanessa create the lies.

But he knew he could no longer leave Emily alone with either of them.

He walked upstairs and knocked on Emily's door.

“Come in,” she called.

Emily sat at her desk, reading the letter her mother had written.

Daniel sat beside her.

“I want you to stay with Aunt Rachel for a few days.””

Emily looked up.

“Why?””

“Because I need to make sure you have some space while I sort out what's happening here.””

“Are you sending me away?””

“No.”” He took her hand.

“I'm giving you somewhere peaceful to breathe. I'll come with you if you want.””

Emily's eyes filled.

“Dad, I don't want to leave you.””

“You won't lose me by sleeping somewhere else for a few nights.””

She considered his words.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

Daniel kissed her forehead.

“I'll make the arrangements.””

But before he could stand, Emily reached for his wrist.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Do you think Mom would be disappointed in me for not forgiving Vanessa?””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

“How can you be sure?””

He thought of the original letter, the paragraph someone had removed, and the promise his wife had asked their daughter to make.

Then he smiled sadly.

“Because your mother wanted you to be happy. She never asked you to accept cruelty in order to prove you were kind.””

Emily's shoulders relaxed.

For the first time in days, she smiled.

That night, Daniel packed a small overnight bag for her and placed the wooden box containing her mother's letter inside it.

He planned to drive her to Aunt Rachel's house the next morning.

But at 11:48 p.m., a loud crash came from downstairs.

Daniel rushed out of his bedroom.

Linda stood in the hallway, pale and shaking.

Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.

“What happened?”” Daniel demanded.

Linda looked toward the front door.

“She took the car.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Vanessa. She took my car keys and left.””

“Where did she go?””

“I don't know!””

Daniel grabbed his phone.

Then he noticed a sheet of paper on the floor beside Linda's feet.

It was a handwritten note.

He picked it up.

I'm tired of being treated like a monster. By the time you read this, you'll finally understand what Emily has done to me.

Daniel looked at Linda.

“Did she say anything before she left?””

Linda shook her head, tears running down her cheeks.

“She said she was going to make you listen.””

Daniel immediately called Vanessa.

The phone rang four times before going to voicemail.

He called again.

No answer.

Then a message arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of the front gate of their house, taken from the road.

Beneath it were six words.

*Come outside. It's time you knew.*

Daniel stepped toward the window.

A pair of headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

And as the car rolled slowly toward the house, he realized that Vanessa hadn't left to escape the consequences.

She had left to bring someone back.

Someone who knew the truth about the letter.

Someone who might finally explain why Vanessa had been willing to destroy her own family just to make Emily lose her place in it.

The car stopped.

The driver's door opened.

And Daniel heard a woman's voice call his name.

“Daniel? We need to talk about your wife.””
