Chapter 3: The Father's Ultimatum
“She's lying,” Vanessa blurted.
The words came too quickly.
Daniel stood at the bottom of the stairs, the torn purple dress draped over his forearm. Emily remained beside him, her cheek red and swollen, her fingers curled tightly around the hem of her shirt.
Vanessa gripped the banister.
“I didn't hit her. Mom did that because Emily attacked me first.””
Linda stepped forward.
“Daniel, please. We can discuss this privately.””
“No,” Daniel said.
“We can discuss it right here.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Did you cut the dress?””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward Linda.
“It was already damaged.””
Daniel held up a long strip of satin.
“Then explain why there are fresh cuts through every layer.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I was trying to fix it.””
“With scissors?””
“I don't know what you want me to say!””
“I want you to tell the truth.””
Linda folded her arms.
“Daniel, you're frightening her.””
He turned toward his wife.
“Emily is standing here with a handprint on her face. She is the one who was frightened.””
Linda's cheeks reddened.
“You don't understand what she's been doing to us. She resents our marriage. She constantly tries to make Vanessa feel unwelcome.””
Emily stared at her stepmother.
“I let Vanessa use my makeup. I gave her my old headphones. I even let her borrow Mom's jewelry box because she said she wanted to feel at home.””
Linda's expression hardened at the mention of Emily's late mother.
“Don't bring your mother into this.””
“I'm not!”” Emily cried.
“I'm telling you what happened!””
Daniel raised one hand.
“Enough. Nobody is going to shout her down.””
Vanessa let out a disbelieving laugh.
“Seriously? You're taking her side without even hearing mine?””
“I've been hearing your side for months,” Daniel replied.
“Every time Emily came to me upset, your mother explained it away. Every time something of Emily's went missing, you had a reason. Every time the two of you fought, somehow Emily ended up apologizing.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You said you wanted us to be sisters!””
“I wanted you to treat each other like family. I never asked Emily to become your punching bag.””
Linda stepped between them.
“That's enough, Daniel. Vanessa is my daughter. You cannot speak to her like she's some criminal.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“And Emily is my daughter. You don't get to slap her and then demand that I protect your feelings.””
Linda looked genuinely stunned.
For years, she had counted on Daniel's desire to keep the peace. He disliked confrontation, hated raised voices, and always tried to find a compromise.
She had mistaken his patience for weakness.
Vanessa had made the same mistake.
“Mom,” Vanessa said sharply, “tell him what Emily did to my phone last week.””
Linda seized the opportunity.
“Exactly! Vanessa's phone was damaged, and Emily was the last person in her room.””
Daniel looked at Emily.
“Did you damage Vanessa's phone?””
“No.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“Of course she'll deny it.””
“Then we'll discuss the phone separately,” Daniel said.
“It does not explain the dress or the slap.””
“But she deserves consequences!”” Vanessa snapped.
Daniel took one step toward her.
“For what?””
“For always getting everything!””
The confession burst out before Vanessa could stop it.
Her eyes widened.
Daniel remained still.
“What exactly does Emily have that you believe you deserve?””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“Your attention! Your money! Your stupid little family traditions! You take her side every single time!””
“Because she's my daughter?””
“I'm your daughter too!””
The words echoed through the entryway.
For a brief moment, Daniel's expression softened. He understood the insecurity beneath Vanessa's anger. She had grown up with her own disappointments, and perhaps she feared that her mother's new marriage would leave her unwanted.
But pain did not give Vanessa permission to hurt someone else.
“You are part of this household,” Daniel said.
“I have tried to make that clear from the beginning. I've paid for your school supplies, helped with your driving lessons, and made room for you in my home. I've never asked you to compete with Emily.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with angry tears.
“You don't love me like you love her.””
“I cannot replace your father, Vanessa. But I have treated you with respect, and I expect the same from you.””
She shook her head.
“Whatever.””
Daniel glanced at the dress again.
“This wasn't an accident. You cut it because you wanted to hurt Emily.””
Vanessa's silence answered him.
Then, incredibly, she smirked.
“So what? It's just a dress.””
Emily's face crumpled.
Daniel looked at Vanessa for a long moment.
Then he said, “You have thirty seconds to apologize to your stepsister.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
Linda immediately protested.
“She doesn't have to apologize when Emily started the fight!””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Your daughter destroyed something Emily worked for, lied about it, and watched you slap her. If you believe that's acceptable, you can explain your reasoning to me after Vanessa apologizes.””
Vanessa's cheeks burned.
“You can't force me to say something I don't mean.””
“No,” Daniel replied.
“But I can decide what behavior I will allow in my home.””
He looked at Emily.
“Sweetheart, go sit in the kitchen. I need to handle this.””
Emily hesitated.
“Dad, please don't make things worse.””
Daniel's face softened.
“Look at me.””
She lifted her eyes.
“You did nothing to deserve being hurt. You don't have to protect the people who hurt you from the consequences of their actions.””
Emily pressed her lips together and walked toward the kitchen.
Vanessa watched her go.
Then she turned back to Daniel.
“You're choosing her over me.””
“I'm choosing to protect my daughter from abuse.””
“Then maybe you shouldn't have married my mother!””
Linda gasped.
“Vanessa!””
But the girl was already too angry to stop.
“Maybe we should leave! Maybe that's what you want!””
Daniel nodded once.
“If you continue behaving this way, leaving may become necessary.””
The color drained from Vanessa's face.
She had expected shouting. She had expected her mother to threaten divorce, cry, or remind Daniel how much he owed them.
She had never expected him to agree.
Linda grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, you cannot threaten to throw us out over a piece of clothing.””
He gently removed her hand.
“This is not about a piece of clothing. It's about the way Emily is being treated in her own home.””
“She is not being abused!”” Linda insisted.
“I gave her one slap because she was disrespectful!””
Daniel's voice dropped.
“You struck a seventeen-year-old girl who was already crying because you believed a lie. There is no acceptable excuse for that.””
Linda looked away.
Vanessa folded her arms, attempting to recover her composure.
“Fine. I'm sorry.””
Daniel didn't move.
“Look at Emily and say it.””
Vanessa's gaze shifted toward the kitchen doorway, where Emily stood listening.
“I'm sorry you got upset,” Vanessa muttered.
“That isn't an apology,” Daniel said.
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I'm sorry I cut your stupid dress!””
Emily flinched at the word stupid.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Try again.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You said apologize! I apologized!””
“And I said to tell the truth. You have managed neither.””
Linda grabbed Vanessa's shoulder.
“Stop pushing her, Daniel!””
He turned to face them both.
Then he delivered the words that would change the household forever.
“Listen carefully. From this moment forward, neither of you will touch Emily, threaten her, humiliate her, or damage anything that belongs to her. If either of you lays a hand on her again, you will leave this house immediately.
I don't care whether you're my wife or my stepdaughter. I will arrange somewhere for you to stay, but you will not remain here while Emily is unsafe.””
Linda stared at him as though he had slapped her.
“You would throw your own wife out?””
“I would protect my child.””
“And what about my daughter?””
“She is responsible for her own choices. I will help her if she wants to change. I will not excuse her cruelty.””
Vanessa's hands began to shake.
“You can't do this.””
Daniel pointed toward the front door.
“I can, and I will.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Not because she regretted destroying the dress.
Not because she felt guilty about the slap.
But because she suddenly understood that the house, the money, the comforts, and the influence she had enjoyed were not hers to command.
Her mother had promised her that Daniel would always choose peace over conflict.
Now he had chosen a side.
And it wasn't theirs.
Linda pulled Vanessa toward the stairs.
“Come upstairs,” she said coldly.
“We are not discussing this any further.””
Daniel didn't stop them.
But as Vanessa reached the landing, he spoke again.
“One more thing.””
They turned.
“The dress is going to be examined, and I'm going to find out whether anything else has happened to Emily's belongings. If I discover that either of you has been lying to me about something more serious, this conversation will look very different.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I'm done accepting convenient explanations.””
Linda's fingers tightened around her daughter's arm.
They disappeared upstairs.
A bedroom door slammed.
Daniel waited until the sound faded before entering the kitchen.
Emily sat at the table with a cold washcloth pressed against her cheek. The ruined dress lay beside her, its purple satin spread across the wood.
Daniel pulled out the chair next to her.
“Let me see your face.””
She lowered the cloth.
His expression crumpled for half a second before he regained control.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
Emily shook her head.
“You didn't do it.””
“But I let things go on too long.””
She stared at the table.
“I thought if I stayed quiet, she'd eventually stop.””
Daniel took her hand.
“You should never have had to earn peace in your own home.””
Emily began to cry again, this time without trying to hide it.
He pulled her into his arms.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Emily whispered, “Dad, what if she really does make you choose?””
Daniel drew back enough to look at her.
“She already has.””
Emily stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
“I mean that loving someone doesn't require allowing them to hurt the people you love.””
He squeezed her hand.
“You're not losing your place in this family, sweetheart. Not today. Not tomorrow. Not ever.””
For the first time since Vanessa had cut the dress, Emily allowed herself to believe him.
But upstairs, behind a locked bedroom door, Vanessa was already planning her next move.
She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone, while Linda paced in front of the dresser.
“He humiliated us,” Linda whispered.
“In front of that girl.””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks angrily.
“He thinks he's won.””
“He thinks he can control everything because he pays the bills.””
Vanessa slowly stopped crying.
A new thought had begun to form.
If Daniel believed the truth would protect Emily, then perhaps the truth was exactly what they needed to manipulate.
Vanessa opened her messages and scrolled to a conversation she had hidden beneath dozens of ordinary texts.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Then she typed:
*I need you to help me prove Emily is the problem. And if this works, my stepdad will have no choice but to kick her out instead.*
She pressed send.
A moment later, three dots appeared on the screen.
The reply arrived.
*I know exactly what to do.*
Vanessa stared at the message.
Her smirk returned.
Downstairs, Daniel was helping Emily gather the pieces of her dress.
May you like
Neither of them knew that the next attack would not involve scissors.
It would involve a lie so carefully constructed that, by morning, even Daniel might struggle to tell which daughter was telling the truth.
