Chapter 6: The Account She Forgot to Hide
“Give me that!””
Vanessa lunged for the tablet.
Daniel raised it out of reach.
“No.””
“You have no right to look through my things!””
“Then explain why your tablet is logged into Emily's account.””
Vanessa opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Linda stared at her daughter.
“Vanessa?””
The single word carried a warning.
Vanessa looked desperately at her mother.
“I can explain.””
Daniel set the tablet on the kitchen island.
“Good. Start explaining.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Emily must have used it.””
Emily stepped forward.
“I've never touched that tablet.””
“You could have borrowed it without telling me!””
“Why would I borrow your tablet when I have my own phone?””
Vanessa's gaze darted around the room.
Linda grabbed the tablet.
“Daniel, this proves nothing. Accounts can remain logged in for months. Perhaps Emily used it once and forgot.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Then why did Vanessa tell me she hadn't used it?””
Linda went silent.
He looked at Vanessa again.
“Did you access Emily's account?””
“No.””
“Did you send messages from it?””
“No!””
“Did you submit those screenshots to the school?””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“I was trying to protect myself!””
“From what?””
“From Emily!””
Emily stared at her.
“I haven't done anything to you!””
“You always make me look bad!””
Vanessa slammed her palm against the counter. The tablet jumped slightly.
“You sit there acting like you're perfect. Everyone feels sorry for you because your mother died, and you use it to make Dad feel guilty whenever I get something you don't!””
Daniel's expression turned cold.
“That's enough.””
“No, it isn't!”” Vanessa shouted.
“You want the truth? I'm sick of everyone treating her like she's made of glass!””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I never asked anyone to treat me that way.””
“Of course you didn't. You don't have to ask! They do it automatically!””
Daniel moved between them.
“You are going to stop speaking to her like that.””
Vanessa stared at him, breathing hard.
Then she snatched the tablet from Linda's hands and hurled it onto the sofa.
“Fine! Believe whatever you want!””
The tablet bounced against the cushions.
Daniel didn't move toward it.
He simply watched Vanessa.
“Pick it up.””
She glared at him.
“What?””
“Pick it up and bring it back here.””
For a moment, she seemed ready to refuse.
Then she retrieved the tablet and placed it on the counter with trembling fingers.
Daniel turned to Linda.
“I want both of you to stay out of Emily's room and away from her belongings. Until we establish what happened, there will be no more arguments about her supposed behavior.””
Linda's lips pressed together.
“And what if she really did send those messages?””
“Then we will deal with that based on evidence. The same standard applies to everyone.””
He picked up the tablet and carried it into his home office.
Emily followed him.
Inside, Daniel closed the door and placed the device on his desk.
“Do you know the password?””
Emily shook her head.
“I've never used it.””
“That's fine. We don't need to guess anything. We'll preserve what's there and have the school or an appropriate technical professional help establish what happened.””
Emily looked at the screen.
“Dad, what if she really did use my account?””
“Then we'll find out.””
He reached for his laptop.
“First, let's document what we saw.””
He photographed the recovery notification, the device, and the time displayed on the screen. He also wrote down where the tablet had been found.
Emily watched him work.
“You're being really careful.””
“I have to be.””
“Because you think I might be lying?””
Daniel stopped typing.
“No, sweetheart. Because someone has made a serious accusation against you, and I want the truth to be clear enough that nobody can twist it.””
Emily lowered her eyes.
He reached across the desk and squeezed her hand.
“Trust isn't the same as refusing to ask questions. Trust means taking you seriously enough to investigate what happened.””
She nodded slowly.
For the first time in days, she felt the weight on her chest loosen a little.
But the relief lasted less than an hour.
At 8:26 p.m., Daniel received an email from Mrs. Bennett.
The school had reviewed the screenshots and identified inconsistencies in the timestamps. The staff wanted to meet with Emily and Vanessa the next morning, with their parents present.
Daniel printed the email.
Then he heard a knock on his office door.
Linda stood outside, holding a glass of water.
“Can I come in?””
Daniel nodded.
She entered and placed the glass on his desk.
“I think we're making a terrible mistake.””
“Which part?””
“All of this. The accusations, the tablet, the school. Vanessa is a teenager. She makes mistakes.””
“Then she needs to take responsibility for them.””
Linda sat opposite him.
“She feels threatened by Emily. She thinks you're going to abandon her.””
“I'm not abandoning her. I'm asking her to stop hurting Emily.””
Linda rubbed her forehead.
“What do you want from me, Daniel?””
“I want you to stop excusing behavior that would be unacceptable from anyone else.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You're making me choose between my daughter and my marriage.””
Daniel leaned back.
“No. Vanessa is making choices, and you're deciding whether to hold her accountable.””
Linda stared at him.
“You've changed.””
“Maybe I've finally stopped confusing silence with peace.””
For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking clock on the wall.
Then Linda stood.
“If Vanessa loses everything because of this, I will never forgive you.””
Daniel looked at her sadly.
“She doesn't have to lose everything. She has to stop trying to take everything from Emily.””
Linda left without another word.
The following morning, the school conference began at nine.
Emily sat beside Daniel in a small office, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Vanessa sat across from them with Linda beside her.
Mrs. Bennett placed the screenshots on the table.
“We have not reached a conclusion,” she began.
“But there are discrepancies that need to be addressed.””
Daniel nodded.
“That's why we're here.””
Mrs. Bennett turned to Vanessa.
“You reported that Emily sent these messages to Chloe. Can you explain how you obtained the screenshots?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Chloe sent them to me.””
“Did you see the messages arrive on Emily's phone?””
“No.””
“Did you personally observe Emily sending any of them?””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“No, but—”
“Thank you. Emily, did you send these messages?””
“No.””
“Have you ever given Vanessa permission to access your social media accounts?””
“Never.””
Mrs. Bennett made a note.
Then she turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, you mentioned that a device at home appeared to be logged into Emily's account.””
Daniel explained what had happened, sticking to the facts.
He didn't accuse Vanessa of anything he couldn't establish. He didn't speculate about her motives.
He simply described the tablet, the recovery notification, and where it had been found.
Mrs. Bennett listened carefully.
“Given these details, I recommend that we pause any disciplinary decision until the account activity can be examined further.””
Linda looked relieved.
“Good. Then we can all agree that Emily shouldn't be punished.””
Daniel shook his head.
“We can agree that nobody should be punished until we know what happened.””
Vanessa glared at him.
“You really can't help yourself, can you?””
He met her gaze.
“I can. I'm choosing not to.””
The meeting ended without a disciplinary decision.
Outside the office, Emily finally exhaled.
“Thank you,” she whispered to her father.
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“We're not finished yet.””
She nodded.
Across the parking lot, Vanessa stood beside Linda, staring at her phone.
A message had appeared from Chloe.
*Why did you tell the school Emily sent those messages? I thought you said you had proof.*
Vanessa typed quickly.
*I do. Just wait.*
Chloe replied almost immediately.
*Then send it to me. Because if you made this up, I'm not taking the blame for you.*
Vanessa's hands trembled.
She looked up and saw Emily climbing into Daniel's car.
Her stepfather was opening the passenger door for her, his hand resting protectively on the roof.
Vanessa watched them drive away.
For years, she had believed that if she could make Emily look bad enough, Daniel would finally stop choosing her.
Instead, every lie seemed to be pulling him closer to the truth.
She needed something stronger.
Something nobody could explain away.
Something that would make Daniel question not just Emily's behavior, but the entire relationship between them.
That afternoon, while Linda was at work, Vanessa entered Emily's bedroom.
She had been there dozens of times before.
She knew which drawer held Emily's school notebooks. She knew where Emily kept the old photographs of her mother. She even knew the hiding place where Emily stored the money she earned babysitting.
Vanessa opened the bottom drawer of the desk.
Inside lay a small wooden box.
She lifted the lid.
A silver necklace rested on top of several photographs.
Vanessa recognized it immediately. Daniel had given it to Emily for her seventeenth birthday.
Beneath it lay a folded sheet of paper.
Vanessa unfolded it.
It was a handwritten letter from Emily's late mother, written years earlier and carefully preserved.
Vanessa read the first few lines.
Then her expression changed.
An idea began to take shape.
She photographed the letter, returned it to the box, and closed the drawer.
Before leaving the room, she paused beside the closet.
The ruined purple dress still lay in its paper bag.
Vanessa picked up one of the remaining pieces of satin and ran it between her fingers.
“You should have stayed quiet,” she whispered.
Then she walked downstairs and sent a message to her mother.
*I know how to make Dad finally see Emily differently.*
Linda's reply came a minute later.
*What are you planning?*
Vanessa stared at the screen.
For the first time, even she hesitated before answering.
Then she typed six words.
May you like
*I'm going to use her mother.*
And downstairs, in the quiet kitchen, Daniel was about to discover that the worst betrayal in his house had not yet happened.
