Chapter 8: The Evidence Everyone Wanted
I didn’t go home.
Not to Caleb.
Not to the house where every room held memories that now felt contaminated.
I stayed at a hotel across town.
A place where nobody knew me.
Nobody knew my marriage.
Nobody knew my name.
For the first time in years, I was completely alone.
And somehow, that felt safer.
The next morning, Daniel met me there.
He placed a folder on the table.
“You need to see this.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He hesitated.
“Something about your father.””
I sighed.
“Of course.””
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were old business records.
Emails.
Contracts.
Photographs.
“The evidence your father collected was real.””
I stared at the pages.
“Then why didn’t he expose Richard?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Because there was a problem.””
“What problem?””
He pointed to one document.
“Your father was involved too.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Not in the theft.””
“Then what?””
“Your father helped hide the money.””
I felt sick.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does if he was trying to preserve evidence.””
I looked at the documents.
“Explain.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Your father discovered Richard was moving money illegally. But before he could report him, Richard found out.””
“So my father panicked.””
“Yes.””
“And hid everything.””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“So Caleb wasn’t completely lying.””
“No.””
That hurt.
Because I wanted everything Caleb said to be a lie.
It would have been easier.
But truth was never that simple.
Daniel continued.
“Your father created a trust account and stored copies of everything there.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed Richard would destroy the original records.””
I looked at the papers.
“And Caleb knew.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because Richard told him.””
My stomach turned.
“So Caleb married me to find the evidence.””
Daniel nodded.
“But I think there’s something you’re missing.””
“What?””
“He didn’t just need information.””
“What else?””
“He needed access.””
I stared at him.
“My access.””
“Yes.””
My father.
My inheritance.
My identity.
Everything Caleb had studied.
Everything he had planned.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Emma?””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
“My name is Vanessa.””
I almost hung up.
Almost.
“What do you want?””
“To tell you the truth.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You’re asking me to trust you?””
“No.””
Her voice sounded tired.
“I wouldn’t trust me either.””
I looked at Daniel.
He motioned for me to continue.
“Then why call?””
“Because Caleb is going to destroy everyone if you don’t understand what’s happening.””
My jaw tightened.
“You mean your business partner?””
Silence.
Then she said,
“You think I’m his partner.””
A pause.
“I’m his victim.””
I didn’t know what to say.
“What?””
“Caleb has been using me too.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I don’t expect you to believe anything.””
Her voice cracked.
“I expect you to listen.””
I stayed quiet.
“Caleb came to my family years ago.””
“Why?””
“He wanted access to my father’s company.””
“Through marriage?””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“But you were never married.””
“No.””
The silence stretched.
“Because I refused.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Then why were you with him?””
“Because he threatened me.””
The room went still.
“What did he threaten?””
Vanessa whispered,
“He said he would expose what my father did if I didn’t help him.””
I looked at Daniel.
This was getting bigger.
Much bigger.
“What did you help him do?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa said,
“I helped him find your father’s evidence.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The connection.
The missing piece.
“Why are you telling me now?””
“Because I found out something.””
“What?””
“Caleb doesn’t want the evidence anymore.””
I frowned.
“What does he want?””
Her answer was quiet.
“He wants to erase everyone connected to it.””
My skin went cold.
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
“Who else?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said,
“Lauren.””
I looked down.
“Your first wife?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Lauren discovered the truth before you did.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What truth?””
Vanessa whispered,
“The evidence your father left behind isn’t just about Richard.””
I waited.
“It’s about Caleb.””
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
Daniel looked at me.
“What did she say?””
I slowly placed the phone down.
“She said Caleb isn’t trying to recover evidence.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“He’s trying to destroy it.””
My phone buzzed again.
A message.
From Lauren.
Only five words.
*I found the original documents.*
May you like
Then another message appeared.
*Caleb knows.*
