Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Money

Daniel’s office smelled like coffee and old paper.

Usually, that kind of place made me feel safe.

Not that day.

That day, every file felt like another piece of my life being taken apart.

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

“Before you open this, I need you to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“People like Caleb rarely have one secret.””

I swallowed.

“I’m starting to notice.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were bank records.

Property documents.

Names.

Dates.

Connections.

And one name appeared again and again.

Vanessa Whitmore.

I stared at it.

“She’s involved.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“We’re still confirming everything.””

I looked through the papers.

“Then tell me what you know.””

Daniel pointed to a line on one document.

“Six months ago, Caleb transferred a large amount of money into a business account.””

“His company?””

“No.””

“Then whose?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa’s.””

My chest tightened.

“So the affair was real.””

“Yes.””

“But there’s more.””

Of course there was.

There was always more.

Daniel slid another document toward me.

“This company wasn’t created recently.””

I read the date.

Five years ago.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Caleb told me he barely knew Vanessa.””

Daniel leaned back.

“Did he?””

I remembered every conversation.

Every casual mention.

Every time Vanessa came over.

Every time Caleb said, “She’s just a neighbor.””

I felt sick.

Because I realized something.

He had been introducing me to her slowly.

Making her familiar.

Making her safe.

“Why would he do that?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said,

“I think Vanessa was part of his plan before you ever knew there was a plan.””

I drove home without remembering the journey.

When I walked inside, Caleb was waiting.

He stood up.

“You talked to your lawyer.””

“Yes.””

“What did he tell you?””

I placed my keys on the table.

“That you and Vanessa have been connected for years.””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“That’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

The same sentence.

The same excuse.

“You need a new line.””

“Emma.””

“No. I’m tired of hearing the same words from different lies.””

He stepped closer.

“Vanessa and I had a business connection.””

“Business?””

“Yes.””

“So why were you sleeping next to her?””

He had no answer.

I walked past him.

“Where are you going?””

“To pack.””

His voice became sharper.

“You’re leaving?””

I turned around.

“You thought I wouldn’t?””

“I thought we could talk.””

“We did talk.””

“No, you accused me.””

I stared at him.

“You’re right.””

He looked surprised.

“I’m not accusing you anymore.””

I picked up my suitcase.

“I’m listening.””

That scared him.

Because people like Caleb could handle anger.

They could fight against anger.

But they struggled against silence.

They struggled when someone stopped asking for permission to be hurt.

“Emma, please.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me the truth.””

“I have.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’ve told me versions.””

He looked away.

“Versions that protect you.””

My phone rang.

Lauren.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Emma, you need to know something.””

“What?””

“I found out why Caleb chose you.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

There was a pause.

Then Lauren said,

“When Caleb left me, he didn’t leave because he fell out of love.””

I looked at Caleb.

He was watching me.

“He left because he found out about your family.””

My blood ran cold.

“My family?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

Lauren continued.

“He knew who you were before he met you.””

The room became silent.

“What do you mean?””

“Emma…”

Her voice dropped.

“Caleb didn’t discover you.””

A pause.

“He selected you.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying you weren’t a new beginning.””

May you like

I stared at Caleb.

“You were a target.””
