Chapter 3: The Wife Before Me

I spent the next morning staring at a photograph.

Not crying.

Not screaming.

Just staring.

Because sometimes the biggest betrayals don’t arrive like explosions.

Sometimes they arrive quietly.

A picture.

A name.

A truth that changes every memory you thought you understood.

The woman in the photo was standing beside Caleb.

They looked younger.

Maybe five years younger.

He was smiling.

The same smile he gave me on our wedding day.

His arm was wrapped around her shoulder.

And on her finger was a wedding ring.

I zoomed in.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized the location.

The old restaurant where Caleb took me for our first anniversary.

The place where he told me, “This is where I knew you were different.””

I had thought that was our memory.

It wasn’t.

He had already used those words before.

I waited until Caleb came downstairs.

He looked tired.

But not surprised.

Like he knew something had changed.

“Who is Lauren?”” I asked.

His face went completely still.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

He knew the name.

“Where did you hear that?””

I placed the phone on the table.

“Answer me.””

He looked at the picture.

Then back at me.

“Emma…”

“Who is Lauren?””

He sat down slowly.

For a moment, I saw something I hadn’t seen in months.

Fear.

Real fear.

“She was someone from my past.””

I stared at him.

“Your past?””

“Yes.””

“You were married to her.””

Silence.

The clock on the wall suddenly sounded louder.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

“I was young,” he said.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because he had a past.

Everyone had a past.

Because he had erased it.

“You told me you had never been married.””

Caleb looked down.

“I didn’t think it mattered.””

I laughed quietly.

“You didn’t think your wife deserved to know you had another wife?””

“It was complicated.””

“Complicated?””

I stepped closer.

“No. Complicated is a divorce. Complicated is custody. Complicated is two people who loved each other and couldn’t make it work.””

I pointed at the phone.

“This is a secret.””

Caleb rubbed his forehead.

“Lauren and I were separated.””

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

“Were you divorced?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence was louder than anything he could say.

I whispered, “Caleb.””

Finally, he looked up.

“No.””

The room felt smaller.

“You were still married when we met?””

He looked away.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“Eventually.””

I nodded.

“Eventually.””

The word tasted bitter.

That was his favorite hiding place.

Eventually.

Eventually he would tell me.

Eventually he would change.

Eventually he would become the man he promised to be.

But eventually was just another word for never.

My phone buzzed.

Another message from the unknown number.

I opened it.

*Ask him about the money.*

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Caleb.

“What money?””

His face changed again.

“What?””

“The money.””

He stood up.

“Who is texting you?””

“That’s not the question.””

“Emma, you need to stop talking to whoever this is.””

“Why?””

“Because they’re trying to manipulate you.””

I smiled.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“You didn’t say they were lying.””

His jaw tightened.

I saw it.

The tiny reaction.

The one he couldn’t control.

“Tell me about the money, Caleb.””

“There’s nothing to tell.””

I picked up the folder from the counter.

“Then why were payments made to Lauren’s account?””

He went silent.

I watched the color disappear from his face.

That was when I understood.

Vanessa wasn’t the secret.

Lauren wasn’t even the biggest secret.

They were pieces.

Pieces of something much larger.

“Emma,” Caleb said softly.

I looked at him.

“Did you marry me because you loved me?””

His expression changed.

For a second, I thought he might finally tell the truth.

Instead, he said the one thing that hurt the most.

“I did love you.””

Past tense.

I heard it.

He didn’t.

But I did.

Before I could answer, someone knocked on the front door.

Caleb froze.

I walked toward it.

“Don’t,” he said.

I stopped.

“Why?””

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Because you don’t want to know who it is.””

The door opened before I could respond.

A woman stood there.

Older than me.

Holding a folder in her hands.

Her eyes moved from Caleb to me.

And when she spoke, her voice was calm.

Almost apologetic.

“Emma?””

I swallowed.

“Yes?””

She looked at Caleb.

Then back at me.

“My name is Lauren.””

My heart stopped.

“I’m his first wife.””

She handed me the folder.

Inside was a document with Caleb’s signature.

And a date.

A date that was three months after our wedding.

Lauren looked at me and said,

“He never told you what he did after he left me, did he?””

I looked down at the paper.

Then at Caleb.

May you like

And I realized the affair was only the first lie I had discovered.

The real betrayal had started long before I ever met him.
