Chapter 9: The Truth About Daniel's Last Night
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Daniel's face on the video.
His tired smile.
His unfinished sentence.
His final words.
Claire... Lily...
At 6:30 the next morning, I called Dr. Samuel Reed.
He agreed to meet us at a private medical office away from the hospital where Daniel had been treated.
James insisted on bringing two investigators.
Margaret came too.
I left Lily with a trusted caregiver and a security officer at home.
When we arrived, Dr. Reed was waiting beside a window.
He was in his early forties, with dark hair and deep lines beneath his eyes.
He stood immediately.
"Ms. Bennett.""
"Please. Tell me what happened.""
He looked toward James.
"Are these people authorized to hear this?""
"They are.""
Dr. Reed opened a folder.
"Your husband was brought into the emergency department at 10:42 p.m. He had sustained severe injuries in a vehicle collision.""
I nodded.
I remembered receiving the call.
The highway accident.
The ambulance.
The hospital.
The doctor telling me Daniel hadn't survived.
I had arrived too late.
Or so I had believed.
Dr. Reed continued.
"At 11:06 p.m., Daniel regained consciousness briefly. He was able to answer questions.""
I gripped the chair.
"What did he say?""
"He asked for you.""
My eyes filled.
"He asked for me?""
Dr. Reed nodded.
"He repeatedly asked whether his wife and daughter were safe.""
I covered my mouth.
"Did you tell him we were?""
"Yes. I told him you were safe.""
He looked down.
"Then he asked me to contact the police.""
James leaned forward.
"Why?""
"Because he believed the collision had been deliberate.""
The room went silent.
Dr. Reed showed us a medical chart.
"Your husband's injuries were severe, but he was receiving treatment. His condition was unstable, but he had a chance.""
I stared at him.
"Then what happened?""
The doctor took a breath.
"At approximately 11:30 p.m., someone entered the treatment area claiming to represent the hospital administration.""
"Who?""
"Peter Lawson.""
I looked at James.
He immediately wrote something down.
Dr. Reed continued.
"He told the staff that Mr. Bennett had authorized a private transfer. He presented documents showing that the family had requested no further extraordinary intervention.""
"That's impossible," I whispered.
"I know. I later discovered that the documents were forged.""
James leaned forward.
"Did you challenge them?""
"I did. But before I could, another physician arrived. He claimed he had received authorization from the hospital's medical director.""
Dr. Reed's voice trembled.
"He ordered the treatment team to stand down.""
I felt the room spin.
"Who was the physician?""
Dr. Reed hesitated.
Then he showed us a photograph.
It was a man in a white coat.
I didn't recognize him.
But James did.
He stood abruptly.
"That's Dr. Leonard Shaw.""
"Who is he?"" I asked.
James looked furious.
"He was the private medical consultant for Whitmore Capital.""
Dr. Reed nodded.
"That's correct.""
I stared at the photograph.
"So Victoria sent someone to the hospital?""
"I believe so.""
"Why?""
Dr. Reed lowered his voice.
"Because your husband was about to identify the people responsible for the financial fraud.""
I couldn't hold back my tears.
"Could Daniel have survived?""
The doctor looked at me for a long moment.
Then he answered.
"Yes. I believe he could have.""
The room fell silent.
For six months, I had blamed myself for not reaching the hospital sooner.
I had replayed every decision.
Every traffic light.
Every minute.
Now I understood.
I hadn't been too late.
Someone had made sure Daniel never came home.
James stood and walked toward the window.
"Dr. Reed, do you have proof?""
The doctor nodded.
"I kept the original treatment records. I also preserved an audio recording from the emergency department.""
He handed the folder to one of the investigators.
"Everything is there.""
The investigator examined the documents.
"These are significant. We'll need to verify them.""
Dr. Reed looked at me.
"I should have spoken sooner.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you?""
He looked ashamed.
"Because I received threats. They knew where my children went to school. They knew where my wife worked.""
I closed my eyes.
Another family threatened into silence.
Another person who had been forced to choose between truth and safety.
"Why now?"" I asked.
He looked at Lily's photograph on my phone.
"Because I saw your daughter in the news report about the hotel. I realized they were still targeting your family.""
He swallowed.
"I couldn't let another child lose everything because I was afraid.""
I reached across the table and took his hand.
"Thank you.""
The investigators moved quickly.
They secured the original medical records and issued requests for the hospital's archived security footage.
Within hours, they found something extraordinary.
A vehicle had entered the hospital's underground parking garage shortly before Peter Lawson arrived.
The registration belonged to a private company associated with Whitmore Capital.
And the driver?
Richard Collins.
The same man who had ordered me out of the Grand Windsor after Victoria slapped me.
The same man who had helped steal company money.
The same man who had stood in the hospital corridor while my husband was fighting for his life.
I stared at the image.
"He was there.""
James nodded.
"Yes.""
"And Peter?""
"Arrived eleven minutes later.""
The investigators enlarged another frame.
Victoria was visible near the elevator.
She was carrying a small black handbag.
The same handbag she had carried into the hotel lobby when she assaulted me.
I remembered her voice.
People like you come here because you want to pretend you're important.
I felt something inside me harden.
She hadn't simply humiliated me.
She had stood near the room where my husband was dying.
And she had walked away believing she had won.
At 2:15 p.m., we held an emergency board meeting.
This time, every director was present.
Including Peter Lawson.
He arrived wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a leather portfolio.
When he saw me, he smiled.
"Claire. I'm glad you're feeling better.""
I stared at him.
"Thank you, Peter.""
He took his seat.
James stood at the front of the room.
"Before we begin, I want everyone to understand that the ownership transfer submitted yesterday has been frozen.""
Peter frowned.
"On what grounds?""
"Evidence of forgery and fraud.""
"That's a serious accusation.""
"It is.""
Peter opened his portfolio.
"Then I suggest we proceed carefully. The company cannot afford to be paralyzed by personal disputes.""
I looked at him.
"You're right. It can't.""
James displayed the hospital photograph.
Peter's smile disappeared.
"Do you recognize this image?"" James asked.
Peter adjusted his glasses.
"Of course. It's a hospital corridor.""
"And the man standing beside Richard Collins?""
"I don't know.""
"That's Dr. Leonard Shaw.""
Peter looked down.
James displayed the medical report.
"Dr. Shaw allegedly instructed the medical team to stop treatment on Daniel Bennett.""
Peter stood.
"This is outrageous.""
I remained seated.
"Why were you at the hospital that night?""
He looked at me.
"I was visiting a colleague.""
"Which colleague?""
"That's private.""
James placed another document on the screen.
A record of Peter's phone calls.
One call had been made to Victoria Whitmore at 11:18 p.m.
Another had been made to Richard Collins at 11:24 p.m.
And a third had been made to Dr. Shaw at 11:29 p.m.
Peter's face turned gray.
"This proves nothing.""
I stood.
"Then explain why my husband's original medical report was replaced.""
He said nothing.
I took a step toward him.
"Explain why you helped forge my signature.""
His jaw tightened.
"Claire, you have no idea what you're dealing with.""
I looked directly at him.
"I know exactly what I'm dealing with.""
He slammed his portfolio shut.
"Your husband was going to destroy the company!""
The room froze.
James looked at him.
"What?""
Peter realized what he had said.
He tried to recover.
"I mean financially. His investigation would have caused a scandal.""
I continued.
"So you helped Victoria steal the company?""
Peter's eyes hardened.
"Victoria was supposed to manage the transition.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel was becoming unpredictable.""
I felt my hands shaking.
"Was he alive when you arrived at the hospital?""
Peter looked away.
That was enough.
The investigators approached him.
"Mr. Lawson, we'd like you to accompany us.""
He pulled his arm away.
"You can't do this!""
James remained still.
"Yes, we can.""
As the investigators escorted him toward the door, Peter suddenly turned.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Claire!""
I stared at him.
"Which one?""
He leaned toward me.
"You think Victoria is the person in charge?""
My heart tightened.
Peter laughed bitterly.
"She's only the public face. The money, the contracts, the hospital arrangements—none of it belonged to her.""
James stepped forward.
"Who was directing her?""
Peter looked at me.
Then he spoke three words.
"Your husband's mother.""
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Daniel's mother.
Evelyn Bennett.
The woman who had attended our wedding.
The woman who had held Lily after she was born.
The woman who had told me she was proud of me.
I shook my head.
"No.""
Peter smiled coldly.
"Ask her where she was the night Daniel died.""
Then the conference room doors closed behind him.
I called Evelyn immediately.
She answered on the second ring.
"Claire, sweetheart. How are you?""
I struggled to speak.
"Where were you the night Daniel died?""
Silence.
Then she sighed.
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Because Peter Lawson says you were involved.""
Her voice became icy.
"Peter has always been a coward.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Claire, you need to stop listening to people who want to manipulate you.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did you know Daniel was being threatened?""
Another pause.
Then she said something I will never forget.
"I warned him not to marry you.""
My stomach dropped.
"What?""
"He became obsessed with protecting you. After Lily was born, he wanted to put everything in your name. He was willing to destroy generations of family wealth for a woman he had known for a few years.""
I felt tears burning behind my eyes.
"He loved me.""
"He was foolish.""
I looked at James.
He was watching me carefully.
"Did you arrange the accident?""
Evelyn didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"Come to my house tomorrow. Bring the trust documents.""
"Why?""
"Because there's something about Daniel's inheritance you haven't been told.""
I swallowed.
"What?""
Her voice dropped.
"Daniel wasn't my only son.""
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
James slowly lowered his phone.
"Claire, what did she mean?""
I looked at the screen.
Then at Lily's photograph.
And suddenly I understood that the people who had destroyed Daniel's life might have been hiding something far bigger than a stolen company.
May you like
My husband had a secret brother.
And Evelyn Bennett had been keeping him hidden all these years.
