Chapter 8: The Inheritance Nobody Saw Coming

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and burnt coffee.

Michael was taken into surgery shortly after we arrived.

The bullet had passed through the flesh of his upper arm, missing the major blood vessels.

The doctors said he would survive.

I sat in the waiting room with Lily sleeping against my chest while James paced beside the windows.

"Your brother saved your life," he said.

I looked down.

"He also helped put us in danger.""

"Both things can be true.""

I didn't answer.

For months, I had wanted to believe Michael was simply a victim of bad decisions.

But he had known what Richard was doing.

He had accepted money.

He had handed over Daniel's documents.

And he had remained silent after my husband died.

Saving me from a bullet didn't erase any of that.

Still, when I remembered him pushing me behind the concrete pillar, something inside me hurt.

A nurse approached.

"Ms. Bennett?""

I stood immediately.

"Yes?""

"Your brother is awake. You can see him briefly.""

I followed her down the corridor.

Michael was lying in a hospital bed with his arm bandaged.

His face looked gray.

When he saw me, he attempted a smile.

"Still bossy, I see.""

I pulled a chair beside him.

"Still terrible at making decisions.""

He laughed, then winced.

For a moment, we were children again.

Then I remembered Daniel.

"Tell me about the trust.""

Michael's smile disappeared.

"Daniel created it after he discovered the first forged transfer.""

"Why Lily?""

"Because he knew Victoria couldn't take the shares if they belonged to a minor beneficiary protected by an independent trust.""

"Then why wasn't I told?""

"He planned to tell you after the birth.""

I looked down at my daughter.

"What exactly did he leave her?""

"Controlling ownership of Bennett Hospitality. Every property, every voting share, and the rights to the company's future acquisitions.""

I stared at him.

"That's impossible. I'm the controlling owner.""

"You control the company as trustee until Lily turns twenty-five.""

I felt dizzy.

Michael continued.

"Daniel created the arrangement so nobody could pressure you into selling. He also appointed an independent guardian to protect Lily's interests.""

"Who?""

Michael hesitated.

"I don't know. Daniel kept that information separate.""

"Where is the original trust?""

"Under the old chapel, like I told you.""

I looked at him.

"Which chapel?""

"The chapel on the Grand Windsor grounds.""

I remembered the hotel had an old stone chapel behind its gardens.

It was rarely used, mostly reserved for weddings and private ceremonies.

Daniel had taken me there once.

We had stood beneath the stained-glass windows while he told me he wanted our daughter to grow up somewhere peaceful.

I had thought he was simply being sentimental.

Now I wondered whether he had been hiding something all along.

At 3:40 that afternoon, we returned to the Grand Windsor.

James had arranged for the chapel to be secured.

Nina was waiting near the entrance with a portable scanning device.

"Ms. Bennett, there's something you should know.""

"What?""

"We examined the memory card Michael gave you.""

She handed me a tablet.

The screen displayed an audio transcript.

A conversation between Peter Lawson and Victoria Whitmore.

Victoria's voice was unmistakable.

"Once the trust is transferred, Claire becomes irrelevant.""

Peter responded.

"And the child?""

Victoria laughed.

"The child is a baby. She can't sign anything.""

Peter sounded uncomfortable.

"Daniel anticipated that. He created restrictions.""

"Then we remove the restrictions.""

"How?""

Victoria's voice became colder.

"By making the guardian look unfit.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"What does that mean?""

Nina looked at James.

James answered.

"They were planning to use the hotel incident against you.""

I stared at him.

"The slap?""

"Possibly. They could claim you were emotionally unstable, creating disturbances in public, and unable to manage Lily's inheritance.""

I couldn't believe it.

"They were going to use the fact that I was assaulted?""

"That's what it appears to suggest.""

Nina played another section.

Peter spoke.

"What if she refuses to cooperate?""

Victoria answered.

"Then we make sure the courts understand that her daughter would be better off with someone else.""

I felt sick.

They weren't simply trying to steal my company.

They were preparing to take my daughter.

James gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Claire, we're going to stop them.""

I nodded.

"Find the trust.""

The chapel was quiet.

Sunlight filtered through blue and red stained glass, scattering colored shapes across the stone floor.

At the front stood a small altar.

Beneath it, an inscription had been carved into the marble.

For the future we haven't met yet.

I recognized Daniel's handwriting on a small plaque.

My fingers trembled.

"Check the date," I whispered.

Nina crouched beside the altar.

There was a narrow stone panel beneath the inscription.

She ran a scanner over it.

A faint rectangular outline appeared on the screen.

"There's a compartment.""

James called the security team.

They carefully removed the panel.

Inside was a waterproof metal box.

I stared at it.

Daniel had hidden our daughter's future beneath an altar.

The box contained several documents wrapped in protective plastic.

The first was the original trust agreement.

The second was a list of company properties.

The third was a sealed letter.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it.

My Claire,

If you've found this, then I was right to worry, and I am sorry I couldn't explain everything while I was alive.

I swallowed.

The trust is real. Lily is its beneficiary. You are her trustee, and no one can remove you without proving serious misconduct before an independent court.

I chose this arrangement because I know you. You are stronger than you believe, and you will never sacrifice our daughter's future for someone else's convenience.

Tears fell onto the paper.

I continued reading.

There is one final condition. The trust cannot be fully activated until the appointed protector confirms the original documents.

I looked at James.

"Who is the protector?""

He examined the final page.

His eyebrows rose.

"Claire...""

"What?""

He turned the document toward me.

The appointed protector was listed in bold letters.

*MARGARET ELLIS.*

The hotel's director of operations.

The woman who had helped me after the slap.

The woman who had stood beside me during the investigation.

I looked at James.

"Does Margaret know?""

He shook his head.

"Apparently not.""

A voice came from the chapel entrance.

"Yes, I do.""

We turned.

Margaret stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

She looked at the trust agreement in my hands.

Then she looked at me.

"Claire, there's something Daniel asked me to do if you ever found those documents.""

I stepped toward her.

"What?""

She closed the chapel door behind her.

"Give you the final piece of evidence.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Victoria Whitmore standing outside Daniel's hospital room on the night he died.

I stared at the timestamp.

She had been there.

But that wasn't the worst part.

Behind her stood Peter Lawson.

And beside him was a doctor.

Margaret spoke quietly.

"Daniel wasn't supposed to be alone that night.""

I looked up.

"What are you saying?""

She swallowed.

"The doctor who signed his final medical report was not the doctor who treated him.""

My blood ran cold.

"Then who was he?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"I don't know. But Daniel knew something was wrong. Before he died, he called me and told me to protect you and Lily.""

She handed me another envelope.

This one contained a handwritten note.

The hospital record is false. Find the original attending physician. He knows what happened.

I looked at the photograph again.

Victoria hadn't simply been involved in the company's fraud.

She had been at the hospital when Daniel died.

And now I understood why she had been so desperate to take control of the trust.

She wasn't afraid of losing a hotel.

She was afraid of what the original documents could prove.

That evening, we activated the first stage of the trust.

Margaret signed as protector.

James submitted the documents to the company's legal department.

The emergency injunction was strengthened, and the registry was formally notified that the attempted transfer was disputed.

For the first time in days, I felt a small sense of relief.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Ms. Bennett, my name is Dr. Samuel Reed. I was the attending physician assigned to your husband's case.""

I sat down.

"Why are you calling me?""

"Because I saw the news about your investigation.""

He paused.

"And because I have been trying to contact someone in your family for six months.""

"Why?""

His voice dropped.

"Your husband was conscious when he arrived at the hospital.""

I stopped breathing.

"What?""

"He wasn't dead when the ambulance brought him in.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Then why was he declared dead?""

The doctor hesitated.

"Because someone ordered us to stop treatment.""

I couldn't speak.

May you like

Then he said:

"Ms. Bennett, I have the original medical report. And it contains a name you need to see.""
