Chapter 6: The Secret Beneath the Crib

By the time we reached the house, two security vehicles were already parked outside.

James had sent four officers and contacted the local police.

I stepped out of the car with Lily secured against my chest.

Our house looked exactly as it had the morning I left.

The porch light was on.

The curtains were drawn.

The small white rocking chair Daniel had bought for the nursery was visible through the window.

But something was wrong.

The front door wasn't completely closed.

It was slightly open.

I stopped.

"Did you leave it like that?"" I asked the driver.

He shook his head.

"No, ma'am.""

One of the security officers approached.

"Please stay behind us.""

I watched him enter.

A second officer followed.

They moved through the entrance, checking the living room and kitchen.

A radio crackled.

"Ground floor clear.""

Another voice responded.

"Upstairs clear.""

James arrived moments later.

"Claire, stay here until we've checked everything.""

I looked at him.

"Someone sent me a message telling me to check the nursery.""

"I know.""

"If there's something Daniel left for me, I need to see it.""

James exhaled.

"Let the officers check first.""

Five minutes later, they returned.

No one was inside.

But there were signs of a break-in.

A drawer in the study had been left open.

The filing cabinet was unlocked.

And Daniel's old laptop was missing.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Whoever came here was looking for something.""

James nodded.

"Possibly the same thing Richard was trying to access.""

I looked toward the stairs.

"The nursery.""

An officer accompanied us upstairs.

The room was painted pale blue, with white curtains and tiny stars along the walls.

Daniel had chosen everything.

The rocking chair.

The bookshelf.

The little wooden animals hanging above the crib.

I remembered him standing in the doorway months earlier, smiling as he imagined holding our daughter.

He had never gotten the chance.

I walked toward the crib.

"What exactly are we looking for?"" James asked.

"I don't know.""

I ran my fingers along the wooden railing.

Everything appeared normal.

Then I noticed something.

One of the small wooden stars hanging above the crib was turned backward.

Daniel had always been particular about the decorations.

He hated uneven arrangements.

I reached up and turned it around.

There was a tiny silver key attached to the back.

I stared at it.

"James.""

He came closer.

An officer photographed the key before allowing me to remove it.

It was small enough to fit inside my palm.

On the back was a tiny engraved letter.

L.

Lily.

My eyes filled.

Daniel had hidden something for our daughter.

James looked around.

"Could it open a drawer?""

I remembered the old wooden storage box beneath the crib.

Daniel had bought it before Lily was born.

It contained spare blankets, baby clothes, and a few toys.

I pulled it out.

The bottom panel looked slightly different from the rest.

There was a narrow keyhole beneath the fabric lining.

The officer checked it first.

Then he handed me the box.

I inserted the key.

It turned.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a black USB drive and a folded photograph.

I picked up the photograph.

It showed Daniel standing outside the Grand Windsor with James.

But someone else was visible in the background.

A woman.

Victoria Whitmore.

I looked at James.

"Why would Daniel have a photograph of her?""

James studied it.

"Turn it over.""

There was handwriting on the back.

The person paying Richard isn't the person making the decisions.

I felt a chill.

"Who is?""

James shook his head.

"I don't know.""

I looked at the USB drive.

"Can we open it?""

James called the company's forensic technology specialist.

Within twenty minutes, a woman named Nina Patel arrived with a secure laptop.

She connected the drive and began examining its contents.

There were several folders.

Financial records.

Audio files.

Photographs.

And one video titled:

*CLAIRE — PLAY THIS FIRST.*

My hands began shaking.

"That's for me.""

Nina looked at James.

"We should verify the file before opening it.""

James nodded.

She scanned it, copied the contents to a secure system, and opened the video.

Daniel appeared on the screen.

He was sitting in his study.

Wearing the gray sweater I had given him for his birthday.

His hair was slightly messy.

His face was tired.

I stopped breathing.

"Claire," he said.

My knees nearly gave way.

James moved a chair behind me.

I sat down.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, something went wrong.""

I pressed my hand against my mouth.

He continued.

"I don't know when you'll find this. I hope I'm wrong about everything. I hope this is just another problem I can fix before it reaches you.""

His eyes shifted briefly.

Then he smiled sadly.

"First, I need you to know that none of this is your fault.""

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

"I've been investigating a network of fraudulent transfers inside Bennett Hospitality. At first, I thought Richard Collins was acting alone. I was wrong.""

The video flickered.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Someone with access to our highest-level accounts has been moving money through shell companies. Richard is only the person signing the paperwork.""

He paused.

"I found evidence that the final payments were being approved through a private investment firm.""

Nina stopped typing.

"Do you have the name?"" she whispered.

Daniel continued.

"The firm is called Whitmore Capital.""

James went still.

I stared at the screen.

Victoria.

The woman who had slapped me.

The woman who had demanded that I leave the hotel.

Daniel continued.

"I don't know whether Victoria Whitmore is the actual person controlling the operation, or whether she's protecting someone else. But I know she's connected.""

The video paused for a moment.

Then Daniel's expression changed.

"Claire, there's something else.""

He reached for a document.

"The Grand Windsor wasn't the real target. It was only the beginning. Whoever is behind this wants control of the entire company.""

I looked at James.

He was pale.

Daniel leaned back.

"And if they succeed, they'll have access to something far more valuable than the hotels.""

He held up a folder.

"The original ownership trust.""

I swallowed.

"James, what is that?""

He didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

"I've created a second trust. One that cannot be activated without Claire's personal authorization. It contains the original ownership records, the voting rights, and the evidence needed to expose everyone involved.""

He paused.

"There's only one person who knows where the final documents are.""

My eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"Who?"" I whispered.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Claire, it's your brother.""

I closed my eyes.

The video continued.

"Michael knows where I hid the original trust agreement. I gave him the location because I believed I could still bring him back to the right side.""

Daniel lowered his gaze.

"If he gives it to you, you can protect everything. If he gives it to them, they can take control of the company.""

A sudden sound came from the video.

Three sharp knocks.

Daniel looked toward the study door.

His expression changed.

He stood.

"Someone's here.""

The screen went dark.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Nina discovered another file.

"Mr. Carter, there's an audio recording attached to the video.""

James nodded.

"Play it.""

The recording began with Daniel's voice.

"Richard, you shouldn't be here.""

Another voice answered.

"I didn't come alone.""

A door slammed.

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

"Michael, what have you done?""

There was a pause.

Then my brother's voice.

"I'm sorry, Daniel.""

A second voice spoke.

A woman's voice.

"Enough. Give us the documents.""

I recognized it immediately.

Victoria Whitmore.

The recording continued.

Daniel sounded furious.

"You told me this was about money.""

Victoria laughed softly.

"It stopped being about money a long time ago.""

Then came a crash.

A struggle.

And finally, Daniel's voice, barely audible.

"Claire... Lily...""

The recording ended.

I couldn't move.

James slowly closed the laptop.

"Claire, we need to contact the police immediately.""

I looked at him.

"Is that everything?""

He hesitated.

"No.""

Nina turned her laptop toward us.

"There's a hidden folder on the drive. It contains a document that was modified yesterday.""

"Yesterday?"" I repeated.

She nodded.

"Someone accessed the original file remotely.""

The document opened.

It was a legal agreement transferring control of Bennett Hospitality's voting shares to a private holding company.

At the bottom was a digital authorization.

My signature.

I stared at it.

I had never signed that document.

But the timestamp showed something even worse.

The transfer was scheduled to become legally effective in forty-eight hours.

And the person listed as the receiving company's authorized representative was none other than Victoria Whitmore.

I looked at James.

"She can't do this.""

James shook his head.

"Not if we act before the transfer.""

I picked up Lily.

My daughter opened her eyes and looked up at me.

I kissed her forehead.

Then I looked back at the screen.

"Call the lawyers. Call the police. Freeze every account connected to Whitmore Capital.""

James nodded.

I took one last look at Daniel's frozen image.

For six months, I had believed my husband's death had left me with nothing but grief and a newborn daughter.

Now I understood.

He had left me a warning.

And the woman who had slapped me in that hotel lobby wasn't just a wealthy guest throwing her weight around.

She was the woman who had walked into my house, stolen my husband's secrets, and tried to take my daughter's future.

But she had made one mistake.

May you like

She had assumed I was too weak to fight back.

And in forty-eight hours, I intended to prove exactly how wrong she was.
