Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew Everything
Michael dropped into the nearest chair.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
David.
His younger brother.
The man who had stood beside him at Sarah's funeral. The man who had brought food to the house after the funeral. The man who had hugged him and promised that he would always help protect Lily.
“You're certain?”” Michael finally asked.
Linda's voice trembled.
“I saw him outside Sarah's room that night.””
“David was at the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“What happened?””
Linda took a breath.
“Rebecca entered the room around 9:40 p.m. She carried a folder. Sarah was awake, although she was very weak. They argued.””
“What did they argue about?””
“The trust. Rebecca wanted Sarah to sign a document transferring control of the money.””
Michael's hands tightened.
“And David?””
“He came in a few minutes later. He told Rebecca to stop arguing because Sarah was too weak to understand.””
Michael felt sick.
“Did Sarah sign anything?””
“No. She pushed the folder away.””
“What happened next?””
Linda paused.
“Your brother told Rebecca that they needed another way to obtain the money.””
Michael stood.
“Did he say how?””
“He mentioned you.””
Michael's stomach dropped.
“What about me?””
“He said that if you signed the right documents, the bank wouldn't question the transfer.””
Michael stared at the wall.
Linda continued.
“Sarah heard him. She started crying and asked why he was doing this to her family.””
Michael's voice broke.
“What did David say?””
Linda hesitated.
“He told her she should have minded her own business.””
Michael closed his eyes.
He remembered David sitting beside him in the hospital cafeteria.
He remembered his brother saying Sarah had become suspicious of everyone because of her medication.
He remembered David offering to handle the estate paperwork.
And he remembered trusting him.
“Linda,” he said, “why did you leave the hospital?””
“Because the next morning, I received a warning from my supervisor. I was told to stop discussing Sarah's medical records.””
“Who gave the order?””
“The administrator.””
“Thomas?””
“Yes.””
Michael looked at Daniel, who had been listening on speakerphone.
Daniel immediately wrote down the name.
“Linda, did you report what you saw?””
“I tried. But the complaint disappeared. I kept copies of some of my notes because I didn't trust the system.””
“Do you still have them?””
“Yes.””
“Can we meet?””
Linda hesitated.
“Not at the hospital.””
“Where?””
“There's a small café near the courthouse. Tomorrow morning.””
Michael agreed.
After ending the call, he turned toward Daniel.
“David was involved.””
Daniel didn't respond immediately.
“Let's not make assumptions until we see Linda's evidence.””
“She's a nurse. She saw him.””
“I believe her. But we need documentation.””
Michael paced the kitchen.
“My brother knew Sarah's trust details. He knew about the restrictions. He knew when I was away from the hospital.””
“And he may have known about the forged withdrawal request,” Daniel added.
Michael stopped.
“Why would he work with Rebecca?””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
“Because he may have had a financial motive.””
Michael looked at him.
“What motive?””
Daniel showed him a public court filing.
David Carter's construction company had been facing serious financial problems for more than a year.
There were unpaid loans, lawsuits, and several outstanding judgments.
Michael stared at the figures.
“How much?””
“Approximately two hundred and forty thousand dollars.””
Michael felt his knees weaken.
“David never told me.””
Daniel turned another page.
“Three months before Sarah died, his company received a loan from a private lender. The repayment deadline was two weeks after Sarah's death.””
“Was the loan secured?””
Daniel pointed to the document.
“Not by property. By a personal guarantee.””
Michael frowned.
“Whose?””
Daniel looked up.
“David Carter's.””
Michael stared at the paper.
“And if he couldn't pay?””
“He could have lost his company and faced personal bankruptcy.””
Michael sat down.
“Seventy-five thousand dollars wouldn't have covered everything.””
“No,” Daniel agreed.
“But it could have bought him time.””
That evening, Michael called David.
His brother answered cheerfully.
“Hey, big brother. How's everything?””
Michael almost laughed.
“Where are you?””
“Home. Why?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“About what?””
“Sarah.””
There was a pause.
“What about her?””
“Were you at the hospital on November 14?””
David laughed.
“Michael, that was almost a year ago. I visited her plenty of times.””
“Were you there that night?””
“I don't remember.””
“Did you meet a woman named Rebecca Brooks?””
The silence lasted several seconds.
Then David sighed.
“Where did you hear that name?””
Michael's blood ran cold.
“So you know her.””
“I know a lot of people, Michael.””
“Did you help her access Sarah's trust?””
David's voice changed.
“Are you accusing me of something?””
“I'm asking a question.””
“Then stop asking stupid questions.””
Michael gripped the phone.
“Sarah knew about you.””
David laughed again.
“Sarah was sick. She believed everyone was trying to hurt her.””
“She wrote a letter warning me.””
“What letter?””
Michael froze.
He hadn't told David about the letter.
David quickly corrected himself.
“I mean, what kind of letter?””
Michael stared at the phone.
“You just said you knew about it.””
“I was guessing.””
“No, David. You weren't.””
A long silence followed.
Then David spoke softly.
“Listen, Michael. You need to stop digging into this. You're going to destroy what's left of the family.””
“Which family? The one you tried to rob?””
David's voice became cold.
“You always were the favorite.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“What?””
“Sarah gave you everything. The house. The business connections.
The perfect wife. And then she set aside seventy-five thousand dollars for a child who already had everything.””
“Lily is eight years old.””
“And I was your brother.””
Michael felt something inside him break.
“You could have asked me for help.””
David laughed bitterly.
“I did. You told me to sell my equipment and pay my debts.””
“Because you were spending money you didn't have!””
“Exactly. You never understood what it was like to need something.””
Michael lowered his voice.
“So you decided to steal from a little girl?””
David didn't answer.
Then he said:
“Rebecca promised me everything would be handled.””
Michael's heart hammered.
“You admit you worked with her?””
“I didn't say that.””
“You just did.””
David hung up.
Michael stared at the screen.
Daniel, sitting nearby, had recorded the conversation with Michael's consent after explaining the relevant legal requirements.
“That may be important,” Daniel said.
Michael nodded.
But before he could answer, his phone buzzed.
A message from David appeared.
*You should have left the past alone.*
Then another message arrived.
It contained a photograph.
Lily was standing outside her school that afternoon, holding Emily's hand.
The picture had clearly been taken from across the street.
Michael's blood turned to ice.
A third message appeared.
*Rebecca knows where your daughter goes every day. If you want her safe, stop talking to Linda.*
Michael immediately called Officer Reynolds.
Within minutes, officers were dispatched to the school and the Carter residence.
Emily was instructed to keep Lily inside the building until a safe transfer could be arranged.
When Michael arrived at the school, Lily ran into his arms.
“Daddy!””
He hugged her tightly.
“I'm here.””
“Did I do something wrong?””
“No, sweetheart.””
“Why are the police here?””
Michael swallowed.
“Because some adults have made bad decisions, and the police are helping us keep everyone safe.””
Emily approached.
“Lily has been very brave today.””
Michael nodded.
“Thank you for staying with her.””
As they prepared to leave, Officer Reynolds approached with her phone.
“Mr. Carter, we traced the number that sent the threatening messages.””
Michael looked at her.
“David?””
She shook her head.
“No. The number is registered to a prepaid phone, but we found something more useful.””
She showed him a photograph taken from a security camera outside the school.
A woman stood across the street.
She wore a dark coat and sunglasses.
Michael recognized her immediately.
Rebecca Brooks.
But Officer Reynolds pointed to another detail.
The woman was holding a large envelope.
On the envelope was Michael's full name.
“What's inside?”” he asked.
“We don't know yet. But the woman left it at the reception desk ten minutes before you arrived.””
The officer opened the envelope carefully.
Inside was a single document.
It was a handwritten statement claiming that Michael Carter had authorized David Carter to withdraw Lily's seventy-five thousand dollars.
At the bottom was Michael's signature.
It looked perfect.
Except this time, the signature had been written in blue ink.
And underneath it was a sentence that made Daniel's face turn white.
*I, Michael Carter, accept full responsibility for the death of my wife, Sarah Carter, and acknowledge that all subsequent financial actions were taken with my knowledge and consent.*
Michael stared at the page.
“I never wrote this.””
Officer Reynolds nodded.
“We know.””
Daniel turned the document over.
There was a small handwritten note on the back.
It contained a date.
November 16.
The date Sarah died.
And beside it were three words:
*Ask about the medication.*
Michael looked at Daniel.
“What medication?””
Daniel didn't answer.
He was staring at the statement.
Then he quietly said:
“Michael, I think we need to find out whether Sarah's death was investigated properly.””
Lily tugged at her father's sleeve.
“Daddy?””
He looked down.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“Mommy told me something about her medicine.””
Michael crouched.
“What did she tell you?””
Lily looked toward the envelope.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy said Vanessa changed the bottles when nobody was looking.””
May you like
Michael felt the world tilt beneath him.
And for the first time, the possibility that Sarah's death had been something other than a tragic illness became impossible to ignore.
