Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Name

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Michael held Lily against his chest while Officer Reynolds stood between Vanessa and the staircase.

Daniel Brooks slowly placed his briefcase on the dining table.

“Michael,” he said quietly, “I think we need to establish exactly who Vanessa Carter is.””

Vanessa laughed.

It was a short, bitter sound.

“Are you people seriously suggesting I stole someone else's identity?””

Officer Reynolds remained expressionless.

“We're suggesting that the identity information connected to several documents requires verification.””

“I've been married to Michael for six months!””

“That doesn't answer the question,” Daniel replied.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You should be careful, Daniel. You have no idea what you're getting yourself involved in.””

Daniel opened his briefcase.

“Actually, I think I do.””

He removed a copy of the marriage certificate.

Then he placed another document beside it.

It was a photocopy of Vanessa's driver's license.

“Michael, when did you first meet Vanessa?””

“About fourteen months ago,” Michael answered.

“At a charity fundraiser in Boston.””

“Did she introduce herself as Vanessa Reed?””

“Yes. She said she'd been married once before.””

Daniel nodded.

“And did you ever meet her family?””

Michael hesitated.

“She told me her parents lived overseas. She said she didn't have much contact with them.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“This is insane.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Did you know that the Social Security number on this license belongs to a woman who died four years ago?””

Michael stared at him.

“What?””

Vanessa's expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“The license appears genuine, but the identity information doesn't match the person who used it.””

Officer Reynolds immediately asked for the document.

“Where did you obtain this?””

“Through the preliminary verification of the documents attached to Sarah's estate.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You had no right to investigate my identity!””

Daniel looked at her.

“You submitted documents bearing my forged signature. I have every reason to question their authenticity.””

Michael looked between them.

“Who are you?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“Michael, please.””

“Who are you really?””

She backed toward the living room.

“I loved you.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“You don't understand what I went through.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa looked toward Lily.

For a moment, something almost resembling regret crossed her face.

Then she turned away.

“I want my lawyer.””

Officer Reynolds nodded to the other officer.

“Please accompany Mrs. Carter while we complete the necessary identification checks.””

Vanessa was taken to a separate room.

Michael sat beside Lily.

His daughter had stopped crying, but her hands were still trembling.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at me?””

Michael looked horrified.

“Why would I ever be mad at you?””

“Because I didn't tell you about the notebook.””

He pulled her into his arms.

“You were scared. Someone made you feel like telling the truth would hurt me. None of this is your fault.””

Lily pressed her face into his shoulder.

“I wanted pancakes.””

Michael closed his eyes.

The sentence was so small.

So ordinary.

And somehow more devastating than everything else.

“I know, sweetheart.””

“I didn't want Mason's pancakes. I just wanted one of my own.””

Michael held her tighter.

“You should have had as many pancakes as you wanted.””

That evening, Michael made breakfast for dinner.

He stood in the kitchen flipping pancakes while Lily sat at the island.

He placed a plate in front of her.

Three golden pancakes.

Four strips of bacon.

And a small bowl of strawberries.

Lily stared at the food.

“All of this is mine?””

“All of it.””

“Can I share with Mason?””

Michael smiled sadly.

“Only if you want to. You don't have to earn your breakfast, Lily.””

She picked up her fork.

For the first time in months, she ate without looking over her shoulder.

But the investigation was far from over.

At 9:15 p.m., Daniel called Michael.

“I've found something.””

Michael stepped into the hallway.

“What?””

“I managed to obtain the original marriage application and the identification verification record. The person who married you used the identity of Vanessa Reed, but the photograph attached to the original application appears to have been altered.””

“Can you identify her?””

“Not yet. But I found an older document connected to Sarah's medical records.””

“What document?””

“A visitor authorization form. It contains a fingerprint verification request.””

Michael frowned.

“Why would they need fingerprints?””

“Because the hospital questioned the visitor's identity.””

Daniel paused.

“And the name listed on the rejected verification attempt is not Vanessa Reed.””

Michael gripped the phone.

“What name?””

“Rebecca Brooks.””

The same name from the hospital record.

“Is she related to you?”” Michael asked.

“No. But I recognize the surname from another case.””

“What case?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“A financial fraud investigation involving a woman who used several different identities to gain access to vulnerable people's estates.””

Michael felt sick.

“Was she ever arrested?””

“She disappeared before charges were filed.””

Daniel sent him a photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a courthouse.

Michael stared at the screen.

The woman's hair was shorter, and she looked younger.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

It was Vanessa.

Beneath the photograph was a name:

*Rebecca Ann Brooks.*

And beneath that, another line:

*Former legal assistant to the estate administrator handling Sarah Carter's inheritance.*

Michael read it twice.

“Daniel,” he whispered, “how did this woman know about Sarah's trust?””

Daniel was silent for a moment.

“Because she had access to the original estate documents before Sarah died.””

Michael looked toward Lily's bedroom.

The truth was becoming more frightening with every discovery.

Then another message arrived from Daniel.

It contained a scanned page from an old employment file.

The document showed that Rebecca Brooks had been dismissed from her previous position after an internal audit uncovered missing financial records.

But it was the final paragraph that made Michael's blood run cold.

Rebecca hadn't simply worked with estate documents.

She had been investigated for attempting to obtain signatures from elderly and incapacitated clients.

And Sarah Carter had been one of the clients whose records she had accessed.

Michael called Daniel immediately.

“Was Sarah the person who reported her?””

“I believe so.””

“Then why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Because the complaint was withdrawn three weeks before Sarah died.””

Michael stared at the screen.

“Who withdrew it?””

Daniel's answer came slowly.

“Sarah's signature appears on the withdrawal statement.””

Michael looked at the signature.

It was almost perfect.

Almost.

And he suddenly understood why Vanessa had spent so many evenings making Lily practice.

She was training her to become the perfect witness to a lie.
