Chapter 3: Seventy-Five Thousand Dollars

Michael Carter found the letter in Vanessa's handbag the following morning.

He had been searching for his car keys when he noticed the folded paper tucked inside a side pocket.

Sarah's handwriting was unmistakable.

He sat down at the kitchen table and read every line.

Then he read it again.

“Vanessa?””

She appeared from the pantry carrying a basket of laundry.

“What?””

“Why do you have Sarah's letter?””

Vanessa froze for a moment.

Then she shrugged.

“Lily was playing with it yesterday. I didn't want it getting lost.””

“Why didn't you give it back to her?””

“Because she kept waving it around.””

Michael placed the letter on the table.

“There's something about the seventy-five thousand dollars here.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Michael, we've discussed this.””

“No, we haven't.””

“Your wife's estate paperwork is complicated. I've been trying to help.””

“Have you accessed Lily's account?””

Vanessa set down the laundry basket.

“I wouldn't know how.””

“Then why does Sarah mention independent verification?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Maybe because she didn't trust anybody.””

The words landed harder than she intended.

Michael stared at her.

“Sarah trusted me.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Sarah controlled everything. Even after she died, she managed to make you feel guilty for moving on.””

Michael stood.

“Don't speak about her like that.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“I'm the one raising your children while you're working all day. Maybe you should remember that.””

From the staircase, Lily watched them.

She held the wooden box against her chest.

Michael noticed her.

“Lily? Come here, sweetheart.””

She slowly approached.

“Did you give Vanessa Mommy's letter?””

Lily shook her head.

“No. She took it.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“That's not what happened.””

Michael looked at his daughter.

“Did Vanessa take it from your room?””

Lily nodded.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Lily looked down.

“Because she said you'd lose everything.””

Michael's face changed.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She's twisting my words.””

Michael raised one hand.

“Let her speak.””

Lily swallowed.

“She said if I told you about the notebook, you'd lose the house and your job.””

Michael crouched in front of her.

“What notebook?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Lily, go upstairs.””

“No,” Michael said.

He turned back to his daughter.

“Tell me about the notebook.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“It's where I practice your name.””

Michael blinked.

“My name?””

“And Mommy's.””

The room went silent.

“Show me,” he whispered.

Lily ran upstairs and returned with a small blue notebook.

She placed it on the table.

Michael opened it.

Page after page contained repetitions of his signature.

*Michael Carter.*

Some were shaky.

Others were remarkably close to his actual handwriting.

The next pages contained Sarah's name.

*Sarah Carter.*

Michael turned another page.

At the bottom was a handwritten note in Vanessa's writing:

Again. The C must be smaller. Make it look natural.

Michael looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“It's handwriting practice. I've already explained that.””

“Why are you teaching my daughter to copy our signatures?””

“Because she asked.””

Lily shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Vanessa snapped.

“Stop lying!””

Lily flinched.

Michael immediately moved between them.

“Don't shout at her.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Unbelievable. You're taking the word of an eight-year-old over your own wife?””

Michael looked down at the notebook.

Then he noticed a sheet of paper tucked into the back cover.

It was a photocopy of a bank document.

At the top was the name of the financial institution holding Lily's educational trust.

Below it was a request to withdraw $75,000.

Michael's eyes moved to the signature line.

*Michael Carter.*

His stomach dropped.

It looked like his signature.

Almost perfectly.

But he had never signed that document.

“What is this?”” he asked.

Vanessa reached for the paper.

Michael pulled it away.

“Don't touch it.””

“Michael, I can explain.””

“Did you submit a withdrawal request?””

Vanessa looked toward the kitchen window.

Then back at him.

“I was trying to move the money somewhere safer.””

“Without telling me?””

“You never listen when I talk about finances!””

“That's my daughter's money!””

“She's eight! She doesn't need seventy-five thousand dollars sitting in an account!””

Michael stared at her.

“Who signed this?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You did.””

“I did not.””

“You must have forgotten.””

“I would remember signing a document that empties my daughter's entire trust.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Michael, you're exhausted. You've been under stress. Maybe you signed it and forgot.””

He studied the document.

There was a date from three weeks earlier.

And beneath the signature was a line indicating that the bank had received the request but required additional verification.

Michael's phone rang.

He answered without looking away from Vanessa.

“Mr. Carter?”” a woman said.

“This is Patricia from the trust department at First National Bank. We're calling regarding your withdrawal request.””

Michael's blood ran cold.

“What withdrawal request?””

“The request for seventy-five thousand dollars from Lily Carter's educational trust.””

“I never submitted one.””

There was a pause.

“Sir, the signature on the document matches the authorized account holder's signature. However, our verification department flagged several inconsistencies.””

Michael gripped the phone.

“What inconsistencies?””

“The document included a handwritten witness statement, and we've been unable to confirm the identity of the person who submitted it.””

“Who submitted it?””

“Your wife, Mrs. Vanessa Carter, delivered the paperwork in person.””

Michael closed his eyes.

Vanessa's face had gone completely still.

“Please freeze the request,” he said.

“Do not transfer a single dollar. I'm coming to the bank today.””

“Certainly, sir. The request has already been placed on hold.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa began crying.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Michael placed the bank document beside the notebook.

“Why did you need Lily to practice my signature?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“I was trying to help you.””

“Help me steal my daughter's money?””

“Don't use that word!””

“Then give me another word for it!””

Vanessa turned toward Lily.

“This is all because of you. You couldn't keep your mouth shut.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Don't you dare blame her.””

Lily was trembling.

She reached into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.

“Daddy?””

Michael knelt.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“There's something else.””

She unfolded the paper.

It was a handwritten instruction sheet.

Vanessa had written several sentences on it.

The first said:

If anyone asks, tell them Daddy gave you permission.

The second said:

If they ask about Mommy's signature, say she signed it before she died.

Michael's hands began shaking.

But Lily wasn't finished.

She pointed to the final line.

“Vanessa said I had to practice both names because the bank might ask me questions.””

Michael looked at her.

“What questions?””

Lily's voice became barely audible.

“She said if Daddy ever disappeared, I would have to tell people that Mommy gave me permission to sign things.””

Vanessa lunged forward.

“That's enough!””

Michael grabbed the paper and stood.

“Get away from her.””

Lily began crying.

Then she said the sentence that made the entire room go silent.

“Vanessa told me Mommy didn't really die the way everyone said she did.””

Michael went completely still.

“What?””

Lily wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“She said Mommy was sick because she didn't want to give her the money. And she said if I ever told anyone, she would tell the police that Mommy had asked me to help her.””

Michael stared at Vanessa.

“Explain that.””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

No words came out.

Michael reached for his phone again.

This time, he called the police.

But before he could finish explaining what had happened, Lily grabbed his sleeve.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

Lily looked toward Vanessa's handbag.

“There is another paper in there.””

Michael turned.

“What paper?””

“The one Vanessa made me copy.””

Lily swallowed hard.

“The one with Mommy's date of death on it.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

May you like

Because the date Lily had just mentioned was not the date on Sarah Carter's death certificate.

And Michael suddenly realized that the $75,000 withdrawal might not be the only document Vanessa had forged.
