Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Teddy Bear
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Two officers entered the house while a third remained outside with Vanessa.
Michael explained the forged withdrawal request, the suspicious authorization form, and the handwriting notebook.
Daniel provided copies of the documents and confirmed that he had never witnessed the signatures.
Vanessa sat on the living room sofa, arms crossed.
“This is ridiculous,” she said.
“I'm being treated like a criminal because an eight-year-old misunderstood a handwriting lesson.””
Officer Reynolds, a middle-aged woman with short gray hair, remained composed.
“Mrs. Carter, nobody has made a final determination. We're documenting the allegations and preserving the evidence.””
“Then why am I not allowed to leave?””
“Because we need to establish what happened to the documents and whether any financial transactions were attempted.””
Vanessa laughed.
“I have a husband. I have a home. I have responsibilities. I don't need to steal from a child.””
Michael looked at her.
“Then why is there a request to transfer her entire trust into your private account?””
Vanessa turned away.
Officer Reynolds raised a hand.
“Let's take this one step at a time.””
Upstairs, Lily stood beside her father.
Her bedroom smelled faintly of lavender detergent. Sarah had chosen that scent because Lily said it reminded her of flowers in the garden.
The little girl climbed onto her bed and reached for an old stuffed teddy bear.
It was brown, with one floppy ear and a blue ribbon around its neck.
“Mommy gave me this before she went to the hospital,” Lily explained.
Michael sat beside her.
“Do you remember what she said?””
Lily nodded.
“She told me the bear was a safe place.””
She turned it over.
There was a small opening beneath the ribbon, hidden by a loose seam.
Lily carefully pulled out a folded envelope.
Michael stopped breathing.
On the front, Sarah had written:
*For Michael. Only if Vanessa starts asking Lily about the money.*
His fingers trembled as he opened it.
Michael,
If you're reading this, then something I feared may have happened.
I need you to know that I did not leave Vanessa in charge of Lily's inheritance. I specifically instructed our attorney to keep the educational trust protected until Lily turns eighteen.
There is another matter I have been unable to discuss with you because I do not know who I can safely trust.
Vanessa approached me several months before my diagnosis. She claimed she had discovered an opportunity to invest our savings. I refused.
After that, documents began appearing in my name that I had never signed.
Michael looked up.
“What?””
Lily touched his arm.
“Keep reading, Daddy.””
He continued.
I discovered that someone had accessed copies of my identification and old bank statements. I asked Daniel Brooks to investigate. He found evidence of attempted transfers, but we were unable to identify everyone involved.
If Vanessa is still in your life, please do not assume that the documents she presents are genuine.
And Michael, please check the original hospital records.
Something about the final paperwork does not match what I remember.
I love you both.
Sarah.
Michael read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
His wife had suspected someone was forging her documents before she died.
And the person she had warned him about was the woman currently sitting downstairs.
He walked to the doorway.
“Daniel!””
The attorney appeared.
Michael handed him the letter.
Daniel read it carefully.
His face became increasingly serious.
“Michael, we need to preserve this envelope and contact the attorney who handled Sarah's medical directives.””
“Why?””
“Because if Sarah documented suspected financial fraud before her death, these records may be important to the investigation.””
Michael looked toward the hallway.
“What did she mean by checking the original hospital records?””
Daniel closed the letter.
“I don't know yet.””
Downstairs, Officer Reynolds was speaking with Vanessa.
“Mrs. Carter, do you know why Sarah Carter might have believed her financial documents were being forged?””
Vanessa gave a short laugh.
“Sarah was paranoid near the end.””
“Paranoid about what?””
“Money. Doctors. Everybody. She wasn't thinking clearly.””
Michael appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
“That's interesting.””
Vanessa looked up.
He held Sarah's letter.
“You knew she suspected fraud.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“She was sick.””
“She knew someone was copying her signatures.””
“Michael, you need to stop.””
“She specifically warned me about you.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“She's dead, Michael! You cannot keep letting her control our marriage!””
The room fell silent.
Officer Reynolds stepped between them.
“Mrs. Carter, sit down.””
But Vanessa was looking at Lily.
“You little liar.””
Lily moved behind her father.
Michael's voice became dangerously quiet.
“Don't speak to my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“She was supposed to do one simple thing. One thing! And now everybody is acting like I committed some terrible crime.””
Officer Reynolds looked at her.
“What simple thing?””
Vanessa realized what she had said.
Her mouth closed.
Daniel slowly turned toward her.
“Mrs. Carter, are you referring to the signature practice?””
Vanessa looked away.
The officers separated everyone for individual statements.
Lily was taken to a quiet room with a school safeguarding specialist, who had been contacted by Emily Bennett after Michael informed the school about the situation.
Emily arrived shortly afterward.
When she saw Lily, she knelt and opened her arms.
Lily ran into them.
“Miss Bennett, I found Mommy's letter.””
Emily hugged her gently.
“You did something very brave.””
“I thought I would get Daddy in trouble.””
“No, sweetheart. Telling the truth doesn't make you responsible for what another person did.””
Lily began crying.
“I didn't want to write the names anymore.””
Emily stroked her hair.
“You don't have to write them again.””
For the first time in months, Lily seemed to believe someone.
Meanwhile, Daniel had made an urgent call to Sarah's former hospital.
He requested the original admission and discharge records, including the physician's notes and the identity of anyone authorized to collect her medical documents.
When he returned to the living room, his face was pale.
“Michael, I spoke to the hospital administrator.””
“What did they say?””
“Sarah's official death certificate lists November 16. But the hospital's internal records show something unusual.””
Michael gripped the edge of the table.
“What?””
“Her discharge paperwork was entered into the system two days after her death.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“No. It doesn't.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“And the person who collected the original medical records was not you.””
Michael stared at him.
“Who was it?””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
“Someone who signed the hospital's visitor authorization as Sarah's sister.””
Michael frowned.
“Sarah didn't have a sister.””
From the hallway, Vanessa suddenly began shouting.
“That's enough! You don't know anything!””
Officer Reynolds stood.
“Mrs. Carter, who is the woman listed as Sarah's sister?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then Lily's small voice came from the doorway.
“I know her.””
Everyone turned.
Lily held the stuffed teddy bear against her chest.
“I saw her in Mommy's hospital room.””
Michael knelt.
“Who, sweetheart?””
Lily looked directly at Vanessa.
“Vanessa told me she was Aunt Rebecca.””
Michael's face drained of color.
May you like
Because Sarah had never mentioned anyone named Rebecca.
And Vanessa had always told him she was an only child.
