Chapter 9: The Last Lie
The voice outside the door was Daniel’s.
But something about it felt wrong.
Not the sound.
Not the words.
The fear.
Daniel had always been the person who stayed calm when everything fell apart. The man who fixed broken shelves, handled family emergencies, and held my hand during hospital visits.
I had never heard panic in his voice.
Until now.
"Emma," he called again.
"Open the door.""
I looked at Daniel's father.
He shook his head.
Slowly.
Silently.
My heart pounded.
"What is happening?"" I whispered.
Daniel's father looked older than he had in the photograph. His face carried years of regret.
"Your husband found out too late.""
"Found out what?""
He looked toward the door.
"That he was never the target.""
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
"Emma," Daniel called.
"Please.""
Every part of me wanted to open the door.
Because that was my husband.
The man I had hurt.
The man who had hurt me.
But the man who had also spent the entire night trying to protect me.
Evan stepped closer.
"You can't stay here.""
I looked at him.
"Why should I believe anything you say?""
His face tightened.
"Because I was wrong.""
The honesty surprised me.
"I thought I was helping them find something your father hid.""
"What did they tell you?""
"That your father stole information. That he ruined people's lives.""
"And you believed them?""
Evan looked down.
"At first.""
The door handle moved.
Everyone froze.
Daniel's father whispered:
"Behind the door is not the question.""
I looked at him.
"Then what is?""
He looked at me sadly.
"The question is who is standing beside him.""
The door opened.
Slowly.
Daniel stood there.
My chest tightened.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt was torn.
There was a cut near his eyebrow.
I moved toward him.
"Daniel.""
He looked at me.
For one second, relief crossed his face.
Then he saw who else was inside.
His expression changed.
"You found him.""
My body went cold.
"You knew?""
Daniel stepped inside carefully.
"I suspected.""
My anger returned instantly.
"Of course you did.""
"Emma—"
"No.""
I pointed at him.
"You knew my father might be alive?""
"I knew there was a possibility.""
"And you didn't tell me?""
"I was trying to confirm it.""
"That is what everyone says.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know.""
His voice broke.
"I know I keep saying that.""
The room became quiet.
Then he looked at his father.
"You shouldn't have come here.""
Daniel's father looked away.
"You shouldn't have married her.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel didn't answer.
My eyes moved between them.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel looked at me.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
"Emma...""
"No.""
I stepped back.
"Not another secret.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Before I met you, I knew your family.""
I stared.
"What?""
"My father told me about your father.""
"Why?""
"Because they were working together.""
My hands trembled.
"Working on what?""
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"The company they both worked for wasn't just hiding money.""
He paused.
"They were hiding evidence.""
My mind raced.
"Evidence of what?""
Daniel's father answered.
"The people who controlled everything.""
Evan looked toward the door.
"We don't have time.""
Everyone turned.
A shadow moved outside the apartment.
Someone was there.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
This time, I didn't pull away.
"We need to leave.""
The hallway lights flickered.
A voice came from outside.
"Daniel.""
Everyone froze.
Because the voice wasn't angry.
It was calm.
Familiar.
My mother.
Daniel looked at me.
Your mother?
I didn't understand.
Then the door opened.
My mother stepped inside.
She looked older than she had that morning.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like she had been carrying a terrible weight for years.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I whispered:
"Mom.""
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I wanted you to never know.""
My voice shook.
"Know what?""
She looked at Daniel.
Then at my father.
Then at me.
"The truth about who betrayed your father.""
The room went silent.
I looked around.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had lied.
But only one person knew where it all started.
My mother.
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out an old envelope.
And placed it on the table.
"I wrote this fifteen years ago.""
She looked at me.
"Because I knew one day you would find out.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Emma, if you are reading this, then your father trusted the wrong person again.*
I looked up.
"Who?""
My mother's face broke.
"The person you married.""
I stopped breathing.
Daniel went completely still.
"What?""
My mother looked at him.
"I'm sorry.""
My blood ran cold.
May you like
Because for the first time that night...
I didn't know who to believe.
