Chapter 4: The Truth My Mother Hid

My mother never called Daniel.

Not once.

For years, she barely called anyone unless there was a reason.

She believed emotions were things people used against you.

She had raised me to be strong, independent, and careful.

She had also taught me how to hide things.

And suddenly, I wondered if that was the only lesson she had ever been honest about.

Daniel's phone kept ringing.

My mother's name glowed across the screen.

"Answer it," I whispered.

He looked at me.

"Are you sure?""

"No.""

The word came out quietly.

"But answer it.""

Daniel pressed the button.

"Hello?""

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then my mother's voice came through.

"Where is Emma?""

I froze.

Daniel looked at me.

"She's with me.""

Another pause.

Then my mother's voice changed.

"She knows?""

My heart dropped.

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Knows what?""

My mother didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Mom?""

The silence on the other end felt endless.

Then she whispered my name.

"Emma.""

I hadn't heard fear in my mother's voice since I was a child.

Not even when my father died.

Not even when she stood alone at the funeral.

"Why is Daniel with you?"" she asked.

I swallowed.

"Because he found something.""

Another pause.

"What did he find?""

I looked at Daniel.

Then at the document.

"The truth.""

My mother's breathing became uneven.

"Emma, listen to me carefully.""

The urgency in her voice made my skin crawl.

"Do not go home.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What?""

"Do not go home. Do not go to my house. Do not call anyone.""

"Mom, what are you talking about?""

"Where are you?""

Daniel answered before I could.

"A restaurant downtown.""

My mother went silent.

Then she said something that made Daniel's expression change.

"Is he there?""

Daniel frowned.

"Who?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"The man who has been following you.""

I looked around the restaurant.

Suddenly every stranger felt suspicious.

"Mom," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Tell me what's happening.""

She didn't answer.

Instead, I heard movement on her end.

A door closing.

Footsteps.

"Mom?""

Then she whispered:

"I should have told you years ago.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"Told me what?""

Her voice broke.

"Your father didn't die because of an accident.""

Everything stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

"What did she say?""

I couldn't speak.

My mother continued.

"He was trying to expose someone.""

"Who?""

A long silence.

Then:

"Someone inside our family.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"Emma, I need you to leave Daniel.""

I stared at the phone.

"What?""

"Right now.""

My mother's voice became desperate.

"You cannot trust him.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

I looked between them.

The man who had spent seven years beside me.

The woman who had raised me.

Both telling me the other person was dangerous.

"Why shouldn't I trust my husband?""

My mother whispered:

"Because your father trusted the wrong person too.""

The call suddenly ended.

I stood frozen.

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, he said:

"Your mother knows more than she's admitting.""

I looked at him.

"And you don't?""

His silence answered before his words did.

I stepped back.

"Daniel.""

He closed his eyes.

"I didn't tell you everything.""

A wave of anger replaced my fear.

"Of course you didn't.""

"Emma, listen—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps saying they're protecting me while hiding the truth from me.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

He reached into his wallet and pulled out a photograph.

Not the old one.

A new one.

Taken recently.

He placed it on the table.

My anger disappeared.

Because the picture showed my mother.

Standing outside a building.

Talking to a man.

A man I had never seen before.

But Daniel recognized him.

I knew because his voice became barely audible.

"That's the person who sent me the envelope.""

I stared at the photograph.

Then at Daniel.

"Who is he?""

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time that night, I saw real fear in his eyes.

"Emma...""

May you like

He swallowed.

"That's your father.""
