Chapter 10: The Truth I Was Never Supposed To Find

The room felt smaller after my mother's words.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel looked at her like she had just destroyed the last piece of something he was holding onto.

"You're lying.""

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"I wish I was.""

I looked at Daniel.

Waiting.

Begging.

For him to explain.

For him to say something that made sense.

But he didn't.

And that silence hurt more than any confession.

"Daniel?""

He looked at me.

"I can explain.""

The words felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had secrets.

"Then explain.""

Daniel looked down.

His father closed his eyes.

"I should have told you years ago.""

I turned toward him.

"Years ago?""

My voice shook.

"How long has everyone known?""

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

"My entire life is a conversation everyone had except me.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Emma, please.""

I moved back.

"No.""

He stopped.

My mother opened the envelope.

Inside were more documents.

More photographs.

More proof.

She placed one picture on the table.

It showed Daniel.

Years younger.

Standing beside my father.

I stared.

"You knew him.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Before me?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Because your father made me promise.""

My mother whispered:

"He made everyone promise.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Because your father discovered the truth about the people he worked for.""

"The people who killed him?""

She nodded.

"But before he disappeared, he found out something worse.""

"What?""

My mother looked at Daniel.

"That the person closest to him was helping them.""

I looked at Daniel.

My heart refused to accept it.

"Is that true?""

Daniel looked devastated.

"No.""

The answer came instantly.

"I never betrayed your father.""

"Then why did he think you did?""

Daniel's face changed.

Because there it was.

The question beneath everything.

The reason for every secret.

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small flash drive.

"I wasn't protecting a secret.""

He placed it on the table.

"I was protecting the truth.""

My mother stared at it.

"Where did you get that?""

Daniel looked at her.

"Your husband gave it to me.""

The room went silent.

"My father?""

Daniel nodded.

"The night he disappeared.""

I couldn't breathe.

"Why would he give it to you?""

"Because he knew someone was coming after him.""

Daniel looked at me.

"He knew he couldn't protect you himself.""

My eyes filled.

"Then why did he make you stay away from me?""

Daniel looked down.

"Because he thought if I stayed close, they would use you to get to me.""

I felt something inside me break.

All these years.

All the anger.

All the questions.

My father hadn't abandoned me.

He had been trying to protect me.

My mother wiped her eyes.

"I wanted to tell you.""

I looked at her.

"But you didn't.""

"I was afraid.""

"Of what?""

She looked at Daniel.

"Of losing you.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel picked up the flash drive.

"We need to see what's on this.""

He connected it to his laptop.

A single video file appeared.

Created fifteen years ago.

My father's name was on it.

My hands covered my mouth.

Daniel pressed play.

My father's face appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

"Emma.""

I broke instantly.

Hearing his voice again hurt more than I expected.

"If you're watching this, then something happened.""

He looked directly into the camera.

"I need you to know something.""

He paused.

"You were never the reason I left.""

Tears rolled down my face.

"I left because I found out someone I trusted was destroying everything.""

The video continued.

"I spent years believing the person who betrayed me was the one closest to me.""

He looked away.

Then back.

"But I was wrong.""

Daniel froze.

My father continued:

"The person who betrayed me wasn't my friend.""

A pause.

"Wasn't my partner.""

Another pause.

"It was the person who convinced everyone I was dead.""

My mother covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

My father continued.

"Your mother saved my life.""

The room went completely silent.

I stared.

"What?""

Daniel looked at the screen.

My father smiled sadly.

"She helped me disappear because the people after me would have killed all of us.""

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then I looked at Daniel.

All the pieces finally connected.

The secrets.

The fear.

The lies.

But one question remained.

"Evan.""

Everyone looked at me.

I swallowed.

"Why was he sent to me?""

Daniel answered quietly.

"Because they thought you had the evidence.""

My heart sank.

"But I didn't.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"They were wrong.""

A small smile appeared on his face.

"You did have something.""

I frowned.

"What?""

He reached across the table.

Not touching me.

Just close enough.

"You had the one thing they couldn't control.""

"What?""

Daniel looked at me.

"The truth.""

For the first time in years, I understood something.

The lies had never been protecting me.

They had been keeping me away from my own story.
